  1. Re:Nuclear Propulsion on People on Mars in 30 Years? · · Score: 1

    The Energia company website says:

    Mass of payloads delivered to:

    * low orbits of artificial Earth satellite - up to 100 t
    * the geostationary orbit - up to 20 t
    * the lunar mission trajectory - up to 32 t.

A nuke powered launch vehicle could lift a 1000 ton payload to orbit or a 300 ton Mars mission that could get there faster and not have to rely on producing fuel for the return trip.

  2. Nuclear Propulsion on People on Mars in 30 Years? · · Score: 3, Informative

The smallest feasible Mars expedition requires 150 or so tons in Earth orbit, which takes 5 trips on the most powerful rocket flying today, the Space Shuttle. A large nuclear powered booster could put six times that mass in orbit in one flight. According to this article, an Apollo size rocket with gas core engines would be safe, economical and would even get rid of excess nuclear waste.

This is not new. NASA tested Nuke engines in the 60's. If we are serious about going to Mars, we have to start building nuke engines.

Some people think that Von Braun actually said 'But sometimes I hit London, but it is an old joke popularized by Mort Sahl.

    Von Braun did say
'Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down?
    That's not my department'.

It was even put into a 1965 song by Tom Lehrer:

Gather 'round while I sing you of Wernher von Braun,
    A man whose allegiance
    Is ruled by expedience.
Call him a Nazi, he won't even frown,
'Ha, Nazi, Schmazi,' says Wernher von Braun.

    Don't say that he's hypocritical,
    Say rather that he's apolitical.
'Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down?
That's not my department,' says Wernher von Braun.

Some have harsh words for this man of renown,
    But some think our attitude
    Should be one of gratitude,
Like the widows and cripples in old London town,
Who owe their large pensions to Wernher von Braun.

You too may be a big hero,
Once you've learned to count backwards to zero.
"In German oder English I know how to count down,

I told him that to mail the materials I would need $15US to cover the postage and to my surprise a couple weeks later a cheque arrived. I was sure it was going to bounce but when it didn't, I sent him what he asked for. The moral is that Nigeria is a big country and not everyone there is trying to run a scam.

By limiting to less than 1 third the number of screens Moore almost guarantees that mosts of the shows will be sold out and there will be line ups to buy tickets. This makes news that is free advertising for the movie. An interesting tactic. It reminds me of when Churchill was explaining why he had the British Parliment renovated with less seats than the total number of members. He said that when everyone attended to vote on an important bill some would have to stand at the back and sit in the aisles. This would lend a sense of importance and urgency to the bill and increase the drama of the event. Maybe 868 was the only number of screens available at short notice but in this case it is turning out as a shrewd tactics as the records fall.

If ever I have a problem with formatting in WP I just open Reveal Codes and fix it as opposed to spending an hour fighting with Word. Lots of other bonuses now in WP such as the built in dictionary and publish to pdf. Too bad that Corel let Paul Allen and Vector steal the company last year. There is no way now that they will ever sell the company to someone who could really threaten MS Word's monopoly.

  15. Re:M1A1 taken out by 'Mystery Projectile' on Electric Armor Tested For Light Armored Vehicles · · Score: 2, Informative

The linked article speculates that it might have been a Russian PG-7VR which has a dual warhead but it would not have to be in this case. A dual warhead is designed to pentrate reactive armour(explosive blocks designed to disrupt the jet). The first small charge on an extended probe sets off the reactive armour which allows the main charge to pass through the main armour.

In this case though the M1 does not have reactive armour. It has an advance form of Chobham armour which uses ceramic plates laminated in layers between layers of depleted uranium armour which can defeat shaped charge weapons and kinetic energy rounds. Unfortunately there are a small number of areas not covered by the special armour and this round appears to have found one. See a diagram here. The jet hit the top of the side protective skirt which denotated the warhead as it is designed to do. The jet then penetrated the thin side armour behind the suspension and entered the crew compartment missing the crew but damaging a number of turret controls. Technically it was not a 'mobility kill' as it only knocked out the turret but the crew was unharmed and the tank was able to drive back on its own power. It is worrying that an RPG jet could travel that far after hitting the side skirt but then again the tank is so well designed that any ammo that could have caused a catastrophic explosion was protected by further saftey systems. The worst that could have happened in this case was if one of the crew would have been in the path of the jet. It was in all likelyhood not a mystery projectile but just a regular RPG round whose gunner made a lucky shot to penetrate a vulnarable part of the hull. It is such a rare event that it is not worth worrying much about.
