I've never thought those types of books were about predicting the future. Take a book like 1984. It hasn't come true, at least not yet. But even if it isn't a correct interpretation of the future, it still serves as a warning. In fact, perhaps a small part of the reason 1984 never happened is because it was written.
It's true. I wonder how many of the people here who always talk about the erosion of liberty in the US are still going to vote for a Clinton/McCain/Obama/Giuliani type candidate in the primaries. (Or not vote in the primaries at all.)
If you want liberty, vote for Ron Paul. If you can't stand voting for someone running as a Republican, vote for Mike Gravel.
This evidence proves conclusively without a doubt that there is a 100% chance that humans either evolved from primates, were created by God, or both. Case closed!
I disagree with you. Isn't that the definition of trolling?
Anyway, I just don't think a therapist is going to talk you through anything a friend couldn't in regard to relationship advice. Being introverted or shy, or whatever, are not mental disorders. I bet if you were to spend one hour a week in meditation on the subject, or talking with a friend, instead of paying hundreds of dollars to someone so they could listen to your talk, you would do just as well.
Now if every time you get around a girl, you start to hyperventilate and then pass out, or something, then yes, maybe that is the point where you need to seek professional help.
Didn't mean to upset mental health workers. The point of something like eHarmony over therapy or a book, is that with eHarmony, you try and find someone who likes you, whereas with therapy or a book, you are trying to change yourself so that someone will like you.
Unless you are still in school (then I suggest you do it through the normal means), eHarmony. No joke. Expensive but worth it. Been with the first girl I dated from there for 9 months now.
I have never been to a shrink, but I suspect they are BS. A book might be able to show you how to trick a woman into sleeping with you.
eHarmony.
(Sorry for the OT everybody, but I thought I'd try and help.)
That would be bad. Hurricanes play an important role in atmospheric circulation. Fortunately I don't think these things will have much, if any, effect on the weather.
make sure they don't start any sentences that sound like this, "That's odd... In America we don't do XYZ like that, we do ZYX"
But I'm not joking about the bring smart well spoken people that are able to understand that they are in a different country, with different rules, laws and cultural norms. There is quite a large difference between stating "In America we do XYZ" and "In America we do XYZ and that is the way you should do it too". It is normal for people traveling between countries to experience some culture shock. It does not mean that they do not respect your culture.
Think about what you just said. Does it make any sense at all? The "public" I know has a big problem with what the RIAA is doing. You only know people on Slashdot then.
The poster made perfect sense. The point was that those of us arguing for fair use are undermined by people like you who just want free music.
Isn't the logical inference that you were bullied, and now you don't see anything wrong with others being bullied? I.e. bullying begets bullying? I never said I don't see anything wrong with it. I was only trying to make the point that not everybody who is bullied in school becomes a mass murderer. I would prefer bullying not take place. But the truth is all through live people will try and push you around, and take advantage of you, if you let them. Once we magically eliminate bullying in schools, what happens when that same kid who would have been pushed around in school has it happen in the office, and he is completely unprepared for it. He goes home crying because some coworker called him a "fagot", and he has no idea how to deal with someone being mean to him.
"Bullying" is not a problem in our schools; it is a problem in our culture. Addressing it in only one place may make things worse, not better.
Bullying is not a good thing. And the failure of most people (including yourself) to imagine that there might be a superior alternative is frankly pathetic. You are helping to maintain the culture of violence, and that is simply a bad thing. I never said bullying was a good thing.
You are right. It shouldn't just go unchecked. In most cases it should be the parents who solve the problem. They should be able to get together and work out a reasonable solution. I think the schools should only get involved if things are being posted online from school computers. In that case, the "bully" should probably lose computer privileges or something. The government should never get involved unless there are threats.
By the same token, bullying begets bullying. No it really does not, except in extreme examples like Columbine. Most people who are bullied get over it and become productive members of society, as do the people who formerly bullied. My own personal experience with being bullied in school didn't make me want to do it to other people, but rather taught me why I should not. It also made me much tougher and better equipped to deal with the real world, where you can't be emotionally shielded all the time.
This seems like the perfect chance to ask a question I've had for a while, that would have been off-topic anywhere else. If I have questions about Slashdot, such as "What does that No Karma Bonus checkbox do?", where should I ask them? Are there forums somewhere for Slashdot readers?
Mr Gates probably gets more done (as do I, in fact) by picking up the phone. Or sending a subordinate. As I understand it, general types will send someone to your desk who will stand there and wait until you have done whatever it is they wanted you to do.
At the bottom of the page it says "NO COPYRIGHT. NO LICENSE.". Does that mean I can use these pictures for whatever I want? Like if I wanted to download one and post it on my web page or something, is that legal?
And easily found if you know what to look for.
This has more to do with OOXML (nerd news) than with India.
A name change is not going to help them. Nobody is going to buy until they increase earnings.
Same here. I am certain nobody will complain about whoever the next president is. I can not wait for the peace and quiet.

Please post your "superior alternative".

Sounds more like this to me. We do seem to be moving in that direction. Microsoft even has its own currency.
