any phone except the USD20-30 Nokias can do email and http with opera. The problem lies in user experience. I have seen how my friend uses his Samsung Omnia, requiring him to press that minuscule "windows" button on the top left with his nail, so his finger wouldn't touch anything else in the screen. That windows button then churns out text menu with small fonts, that were packed so close together, causing him having to use his nail again to press one of them. It's annoying.

It would appear that Nvidia has(as was more or less inevitable) moved away from their WinCE support only stance on Tegra. What remains to be seen, though, is what their linux support looks like. If all there is is "enough binary blobs to get whatever version of Android the OEM decided to install to boot, and nothing more", that is largely useless. A bunch of OEMs get cheap software. Yay, I'm so happy for them. Given that this is Nvidia, I'd be shocked if any but the barest GPU driver support is OSS; but if the support isn't good enough to produce third party firmwares and upgrades for these devices, they might as well be Tivoized.

Why oh why, would the likes of always want to put 3rd party firmware on almost everything. Yesterday it was wireless router, then there were mobile phones. What would you expect? 3rd party firmware for G-Shocks ? Yes, I agree that manufacturer should not create artificial limitation for us to install alternative firmwares or OSs on devices that we own. But they shouldn't be mandated to provide support to you. If you really want support from them, you can always be their OEM partners, I'm sure they will help you to run their hardware on whatever version of android or ubuntu you decide to use.

I can only Google Earth on top of compiz fine only just recently (9.04 & 9.10) if I'm not mistaken. Xinerama support, which was excellent in 8.xx became unusable in 9.04. 21. Re:Stop with the "Better quality hardware" on Apple Fails To Deliver On Windows 7 Boot Camp Promise · · Score: 3, Informative

The list of complete models must be limited, or you get the chaos of half-assed support and conflicting drivers which exists in the Windows world. Apple has a reputation for ease of use, and part of the reason for that is having very specific models with very specific parts designed to work together. Once you open the gates to allow anyone to put just anything they want in the machine, you have support issues. It's a closed product with limited options. If Apple products don't suit you, don't use them. Simple as that. But you come across as a maligned Apple-hater when you could just say "Meh, not for me" instead. I would expect better from someone with a low ID.

the grand parent post purpose is to specifically shows that "better quality" as in "apple form" does not have to be as expensive as apple hardware. To that extent, the post is extremely spot-on

Have you seen their recent blade server technology? While their support is awful, the hardware itself (namely the C-class blades) is pretty impressive.

Amen to that. We deploy clusters of BL460c G1s that runs very smooth. I like how the design that let you remove hard drives without having to dismantle the servers. That is one of the reason why I choose the C-class over IBM's HS blade servers. the iLO2 is also far superior that it's IBM counterpart. However, if you're going to run lots of HP servers on your data center, having an extended maintenance contract is essential. When one of my HP BL20p crapped out, it takes 2 weeks for HP to get replacement part for the board.
