Moron stay on topic
This is a tech area not political
I'm guessing that this would not be an issue on an older machine where the BIOS was not writable and hard coded.
Ah the days of the program Peanuts where this wouldn't have been an issue
Maybe this is the beginning of the end and a new business model will show up. take the lawyers out of the mix and get to the heart of the matter?
This will be interesting to watch
My company has 65,000 users and a desktop client staff of 5, supervisor included. we are a mixed enterprise shop of Unix, VMS, Windows, Linux This staff doesn't include networking/operations/system administration staff, SO you either have a real non-tech base of customers(read Monkeys), your tech's never really fix an issue and they are repeat calls, and/or something is very wrong with your hardware/software configurations, if your handling that many calls, just maybe you should spend this time not looking for a bitch platform and invest this level of effort into setting op a good ticketing and event correlation analysis. Set up a basic Linux box and basic monitoring tools( nagios (FAN maybe?)), etherape, Nmap and use dig and the other stuff like that
Just my thoughts...
Your response brings up some interesting points but I feel it falls short of the real world in this instance. First off when you are in a position such as this person was, you own the keys to the kingdom. That being said I would never hand over the keys to the kingdom with out the consent of the king (mayor in this instance). As for comparing this to a company owned laptop/auto your not even close. The V.P. that keeps this stuff does not put the public in danger as would the CITY WIDE network (911 etc...) being broken. This is a much higher "for the common good" response to the current situation. Ultimately in retrospect, yes he should have gotten a lawyer, but when your in charge a system such as this and the the pool of clueless morons are the only pool you have to pull from (insert supervisor/manager in this instance) you don't take handing the keys of the kingdom over with out the blessing of the king.
This is a new era with new rules and covenants and needs to be treated other than some one walking off with "material things"
Do you have the source code and schematics to your TV and included cpu/roms? Or your microwave or washer/dryer? Car?
well yea I actually do have these schematics, most manufactures include them in the cabinet of the appliance. So if you would just poke around those mysterious machines you'll find them
When they placed it up there, unfortunately some one though it would be a great idea to upgrade to windows. Now the exploit patches have made it nearly impossible to get anything done with this machine.
What about subscription based services?
what if I'm subscribed to MLB.com and and watch every game I can and use Vonage on a consistant basis to make calls and I stream my music online?
what effect would this have on my bandwidth and would it move me away from competing vendors? Would I then find it more cost effective to drop Vonage and use Comcast's Phone service and watch my games via subscription through Comcast?
I think there is more here than meets the eye and only after it's implemented will we see the true fall out. After all what better way to kill the competition than to make it impossible to do business in your area
yea you missed that the config files were not saved
rebooting router(s) effectively brings down a production network that is doing what it needs to do.
I think I'm going retro.
meaning old Film camera, analog land line with a scrambler and breaking my old VW out of storage. now I'm not sure I would want to go back to sneaker net but...
Guess its time to break that old Trash 80 out of the closet! I'd completely forgotten about it. Nice thing about mine was it came complete with an Acoustic coupled modem that transmitted at a whopping 300 Baud
indexing their content in the first place. As I see it turn around it fair play. How many law suites has google had to defend against from print media. If you ask me it fair play

I can see it now Granny gets fined for not keeping logs of her access point

Always wondered what a directory tree looked like in a physical form
and you wasted it with dribble
I like my BSD box with two nic's and a switch for my router. for wireless I just use a access point, no routing involved there

Wait do you have like a black hole at work that allows you to knock off 5 KM on your ride home?
What about those of us who by choice work a later shift? For instance I get in at 13:30 and work till 21:00
I'd be interested in what the power consumption would be in this "instant on environment"

Smokey Yunick http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Yunick took a Used Pontiac Fiero and vaporized gas before entering the combustion chamber. This was done by heating the fuel and running it through a blower type of intake that would further break up and mix the fuel with air. the car got around 50 MPG and 0 to 60 in 6 seconds details located here http://community.myride.com/kickapps/_Smokey-Yunick-Fiero-gets-51-mpg-and-does-0-60-in-Six-Seconds/blog/97164/3898.html this just proves another thing, There is nothing new under the sun and unless your Some sort of Professor/teacher/industry backed researcher you and your accomplishments will never get recognized. Plausible deniability

be sure to user RG-11 or greater cable so loss to attenuation isn't that great

Actually I think they stole it form the HAM operators that were using this technology in their garages long before WiFi became the standard
