So, disregarding the fact that their own scientists cited the machine's insecurities, the executives feel that the 'cost' of replacing or updating the machines is prohibitive for our countries (arguably) most important decision?

The decision on whether it's a good idea or not isn't singularly based on whether the residual effects are permanent or not.
This is a very powerful weapon that, short of immediate damage, would be untraceable and hence subject to abuse. And, yes, most things are subject to abuse but a gun shot/pistol whip/tazer/punch will leave evidence, this seemingly will not.
This goes a long way to legitimize the sport of professional gaming. This in it's very essence will attract sponsors which will mushroom the industry faster than anything you could have possibly imagined.
So you ask 'why not?' I'll tell you why not! What will happen to those poor lonely golfers when their faithful channel 2 (or whatever) stops playing 'The Pebble Beach Classic' on a lazy afternoon and instead replaces it with 'The Halo Championship Playoffs'. How will you live with yourself with those old men crying everywhere right into their half-full glass of lemonade/scotch!
For the most part, though not always, if you have a HDTV you probably have a receiver (as in audio). Most receivers from personal experience have an option to delay sound, in second/millisecond increments.
If you don't have a receiver, or don't have the money for a receiver, then you have, in my experience, a 50/50 chance for your TV to have this as a native function for its onboard speakers.
More regrettable signs of a a fading print industry.
I'm not so sure I'm inclined to agree with that. While the print industry may be shrinking I think this has more to do with a less than stellar product and as the story indicates has much to do with poor business decisions.

I'm admittedly a little fuzzy on the use of Trial de novo.
Does this mean the judge made the case as if 'new' so that SCO would be allowed to present any new evidence it wanted? If so does this mean the judge then used this to prove they didn't have any evidence in the first place and thus would have a hard time appealing?
Google would no longer be the Google we love if they are.
I almost see this as the start of Google's path to Microsoft villainy.
For those who don't like the MS comparative how about Sony?
So a double negative isn't English?
Preferable? No. English? Yes.
Zonk is married, so unless it was an arranged marriage...
Or outright profit for that matter.
Suing someone is now a way of recouping losses rather than a way of seeking justice.

Secure Computer is actually based in New York, and has gone out of business since the lawsuit was filed.
I think it worked well enough.
Wait, this is modded interesting?
You may want to take a look at the capital letters. Just a suggestion.
Then you'll be sorely disappointed with the upcoming Halo 3 Ford F-150 Warthog. But at least you'll still have the Smith-N-Wesson Assault Rifle.

This is it? No comments from the stock exchange. Just be more careful?
SlowNewsDay?
The average consumer not realizing any of these things happened...didn't tarnish their image.
That, my friend is called 'spin' control.
Those idiot actors speak out on social injustice when it gives them photo ops with starving children. Yeah, I'm talking to you, Angelina Jolie.

Newt's IQ is only in the 120s. (I assume PBS is acceptable? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline////newt/va nityfair2.html)
Book smart != common sense.
P.S. I'm willing to bet a great many Slashdotters, including myself, have a higher IQ than 120.
I don't think "Zuned" is going to mean what Microsoft wants it to mean
I'd say the same for 'squirt' as well.
