[1] Hmm. I never have a problem with the switch on mine.

[2] Most players come with crappy headsets, but that's ok. I would much rather use my headset-of-choice that I spent $ on than the cheap earbuds most suppily as an afterthought.

[3] Yep. Gotta love the battery life.

[4] Right now they only take up to 64M cards, Rio did come out with a firmware update not too long ago. I bet if there was enough demand they might update it again. I haven't seen 128M cards at prices I would consider buying but I haven't checked around in a while. I'm happy with the cards I have now (2x 32M and 1x 64).

[5] Has to be your player. I've done everything from dropping mine to having it accidently ripped off of me (watch those headset cords) and it kept on going and going and going.. It's built like a tank AFAIK.

Should also be mentioned it has a good backlight, very customizable settings (repeats, bookmarks, a simple EQ) and nice display which will scroll ID3 tags. Only complaint is if you have all tags visible the font is rather small (if you have less tags visible it will use a larger font).

With the relatively low prices for used ones on eBay it wouldn't be a bad buy for someone's 1st MP3 player..

I have to second the vote for the Rio500. I have mine and a few 32/64M cards and 0 complaints. It works just fine, great battery life (I get 15 or so hrs) and 128M is good for over a hour of music. It takes 10-15 minutes to fill up (over USB) which isn't too bad. No moving parts to break, is very small and very light weight. I haven't found a mp3 player yet that has seduced me to replace it (even Apple's iPod).

I bet if you looked around on eBay or such you might find a used one.

HFS+ is a "new and improved" version of HFS, supporting block fragments, long unicode filenames and a few other things. It brought the aging HFS into the 90's (now all we need is journaling, HFS++ anyone? ;-)

Linux doesn't support HFS+ for writing yet AFAIK and HFS utilities can't read/write to HFS+ volumes. There is work to add HFS+ support to linux, no idea if there is to Windows. Hmmm.. Would decoding the partition structure be considered a violation of the DMCA?

  15. Nemesis Factor [Puzzle Game] on Geek Gift Ideas 2001 · · Score: 1

Not sure if this is for someone you love or hate, but I recently picked up ($18 at Target) a Nemesis Factor puzzle. It's a little electronic puzzle game that will keep your vict^H^H^H^Hfriends busy for a long time. Kind of hard to explain but the puzzles involve everything from colors, sounds, words, numbers, lights, music, even the position you're holding the thing in! Some are easy, some are tricky, all are different. Up to four people can play with it at a time (it saves the status of up to 4 users as well as allowing a "guest" user) and keep separate scores.

Not a bad toy for under $20 (plus the cost of 3 AA's). Probably something for people 10+, definately not for someone who gets frustrated easily and will hurl the thing at a wall.

  16. Re:iPod! on Geek Gift Ideas 2001 · · Score: 2, Informative

Considering the "protection" is making the folder "invisible" I don't think this is going to be a hard thing to do. The harder part will be writing drivers for the PC to mount FireWire drives (not common on that platform from what I understand) and read/write HFS+ formatted volumes (no idea if software to do this exists at all).

Check out iPod Hacks for a lot more info.

You miss the point. This device isn't for computer-savvy people who can rip-mix-burn their own mp3's.. This is for mom and pop who don't know an mp3 from an IDE.

Also take a look at the extra features (that I should have mentioned when submitting the article). The box also is 'net savvy and will download to your portable mp3 player (doesn't mention which ones are supported though). So it's a little more sophisticated than your average mp3 player.

Wonder what OS it's running and what upgrades they could come up with for it. Turn it into a WebTV/PTR unit and it's a nice combo box for your bucks.

The FTC hasn't had the best track record in protecting consumer's rights these days anyway. Big businesses spend big bucks to have their way. Even if some sort of "investigation" is launched you can be sure M$ will be let go with a "stern warning" at best and a "no harm done" at worst.
