  1. Re:When will Europe learn? on Germany Seeks Expansion of Computer Spying · · Score: 1

Remember the reaction on warrantless wiretapping in the USA? Well, me neither, as there was no noteworthy public reaction.

Noteworthy is the key word. Who notes it? The mainstream media oligarchy writes the story and determines what counts as history. The vast majority of the public is probably unaware of much of what has been happening, or is too busy to do anything. The fat controllers almost have it in the bag; lawmakers, media, law enforcement. But, in the end, would the military turn against its own people?

There is a groundswell of discontent rising and it will inevitably reach a breaking point. I suspect though that governments are more than ready for this and can deal with it swiftly.

What I think is the scariest thing is the thought that statements like yours might one day attract the eye of the spying government and get people into trouble.

I remember during a visit to the former USSR, talking to a woman who spent 10 years in a Soviet labour camp. She was 16, working in a bakery that had sold out of bread. Another woman demanded a loaf of bread and she said "Go ask Stalin for your bread, 'cause he didn't send us any flour." That statement alone resulted in her imprisonment, torture and almost her death.

Now if she could have said that and remained anonymous, then she would have been ok.

Because this isn't a rant about a deliberately crippled piece of software like the Windows Firewall. It's about a possible bug. Still, nobody's denying that Apple has a pretty strange record of denial, cover up and failure to fix when it comes to some problems. Apple is also in bed with DRM to some extent, which pisses everyone off.

We shall see if this develops into a "haha", for example, if Apple says this is a feature not a failure, or some other crap like we get from Microsoft so often.

Well for specifics, the W-class trams have been fitted with magnetic track brakes which act as generators, and as far as i know the newer (Siemens) D1 and D2 trams have the same braking principle. In the past this excess energy from braking was released as heat without contribution to the electricity grid. My source was an employee of the tram companies in Melbourne, but I can't confirm if it really is used to save energy in Melbourne. In other words, the trams are capable and designed to do this, but now that I've looked I can't find a written source to verify that they actually are doing this in Melbourne.

    Sorry about that.

  14. Re:Correct me if I'm wrong... on Battery Powered Tram Charges in 60 Seconds · · Score: 1

But a tram runs on rails which mean it always follows a known route rather precisely and can therefore be supplied with electricity directly... No batteries required.

Currently, many tram systems (for example, Melbourne, Berlin) do generate electricity when braking, giving back electricity to the tram network and helping to save some energy, if another tram happens to be accelerating or running at the time.

However, if a tram is on a regional route and far from any other trams, such as at a late hour, this energy is wasted.

Using flywheels and other mechanical devices has been tried but is dangerous and expensive.

This battery device would greatly increase the efficiency of trams.
