What is to stop me from buying a Core 360 and a 120GB HDD? If you don't care about HDMI, where's the value in the Elite SKU?
The 120GB HDD is being sold separately for $180. Core + HDD = $300 + $180 = $480, the same price as the elite. Why would you not buy the elite if you wanted a new 360 with the 120GB HDD?
So for everyone wondering why the hell MS is pricing the 120GB HDD accessory so high, there's why. They don't want people just picking up a core and upgrading them for cheaper than the elite.
Counterintuively, it's good for keeping your weight down.
I've noticed this. I've gotten used to eating a small granola bar every morning first thing when I get to work. Now I find if I stop eating those and just skip breakfast entirely I put on a few pounds after a week or two. My guess is that it kicks your metabolism up early.
Not on my Mac at the moment, but I thought get info did show the full path. It might be under one of the expandable groups. Also, you can command+click the folder icon in the title bar of the finder window to view (and go to) the other folders up the tree. It would be nice if there was a more convenient place to view and select the path though.
Very little of the system has changed except the case and controller. While this isn't a bad thing, it's definately not a step forward as far as technology is concerned.
I really don't want to jump into the fanboy pissing contest here, but there is certainly a technological step forward in the Wii controller, if only minor ones in the graphics department.
Microsoft and Sony chose to make large steps forward in the graphics/processing areas with minor steps forward with the controller. Nintendo chose to make large steps forward with the controller with minor steps forward in the graphics/processing areas.
That's really how it breaks down, which is why it annoys me when people say it's "basically just a gamecube with a new controller". Well that's sort of true, but then the Xbox 360 and PS3 are just an Xbox and PS2 with a new processor/graphics card.
So why don't we all just drop the console fanboy talking points...
I don't know why the parent is modded flamebait... I haven't played FF12 yet, but when I first heard about the gambit system it did trouble me somewhat.
It sounds like they automated the boring, repetitive parts of gameplay you see in older FF games. But that seems kind of silly to me. If that gameplay is boring and repetitive, why not replace it with something that's not boring and repetitive?
But like I said, I haven't played the game, so I can't fairly evaluate it. But that was my first reaction to hearing about the gambit system.
Yes it did. It also lagged all to hell when you were in a slightly populated area. I wish WoW was more customizable too, but I think they did that on purpose to reduce the amount of character info that needed to be passed around to other players.
For years we've been stuck in the world of ultra-huge text just so it's readable on a crappy tube set. We've been unable to communicate detailed information to the gamer. Think about the resolution as a mode of information bandwidth. The more resolution you have to work with (within limits) means the more data you can pass to the gamer.
I love pushing the resolution on my computer when I'm sitting 2 feet from the monitor so I can see more stuff on the screen at once. But I'm not so sure I want to max out pushing info to the screen when it's my TV that's 10+ feet away.
I have a Mac Mini hooked up to my 43 inch HDTV at home. At 720p, the default font sizes for many things in the OS is right at the threshold of being hard to read from my couch. 1080i is pretty much unreadable at that distance. And I have good eyesight with my contacts.
So I rather like the 'ultra-huge text' that console games have, and hope the effective size of text doesn't drop a lot as console games move to HD. (note I don't have an Xbox 360, so I don't know what sizes of fonts those games use)
I wish Netflix would group an entire TV series as a recommendation instead of each individual season. I rented a couple DVDs of Dr. Who and marked them as 5 stars. Now my recommendation page is flooded with Dr. Who. I've already seen some of the series, so I already know I'll probably like the other seasons. I don't need Netflix to tell me that because it's obvious. I'd rather the recommendation system suggest DVDs that I might not have ever heard of or haven't thought about.
I see where you're coming from, though I don't know if I agree that investors will continue to let Microsoft spend money on the xbox project if the 360 doesn't break even or better.
But I still think that MS is not trying to profit on the 360, at least the system itself. They're trying to build a brand that's successful with gamers and synonymous with fun/good product.
Microsoft is trying to build a brand with gamers for the express purpose of making a profit. They knew up front that xbox 1 was going to be a net loss in the end, but what they were buying was mind/market-share. That was true for xbox 1, but you can be sure that they're going to do everything they can with the 360 to make a profit. What good is building a brand if it doesn't result in making you more money?
And I think Microsoft has a real shot at making money with the 360. I don't have one, and I'm not sure if I'll get one (I haven't seen a "killer app" for it yet). But with the high prices on the PS3, and the added revenue from Live and Arcade, they have a good chance to turn a profit.
Windows users seem to have this habit of shutting it down and then starting up again. I've heard rumours that it has something to do with the difference between BIOS and OpenFirmware/EFI and the interminable wait you face to wake a Windows laptop from sleep - I wouldn't know.
I don't know why others don't use the Windows sleep, but I don't use it cause way back when with Win9x I found that coming out of sleep mode, Windows was even less stable than normal. I'm sure it's better now with XP and Vista, but it's hard to get past the memory burn-in of Windows + sleep = bad.
I would bet that 60 years ago, a majority of Americans would have been against interracial marriage. Does that mean that the government in power should have pushed for an amendment banning it? (Maybe they did, I honestly don't know.) Of course today that would be an absurd proposition to most people, hopefully because they would see that it's discrimination and infringes on people's liberty. I wonder if our society will ever feel that way about gay marriage...
There's a difference between following the minority and protecting the minoritiy's rights.
...but what if in 20 years a power hungry psycho uses the massive amount of power we let the NSA have today to declare a defacto dictatorship?
If we make the Presidency so powerful and unhampered as well as its agencies then corrupt evil people desiring power will seek this position. We must keep the Presidents and security groups in check so that this never happens.
This is the most important argument that anyone can make on this issue, IMO, and I'm glad to see you got modded up. People on both sides of the argument need to remember that they don't know what kind of people will be in power years from now, and we shouldn't screw up our system of checks and balances to buy a bit of short term security.
When looking at issues like this one and the wiretapping program, try to remember the big picture before you start arguing for or against these. Whether or not you believe the Bush administration can be trusted with these programs is largely irrelevant. If these programs are tacitly accepted for Bush, then they are accepted for whoever is elected in 2008. And in the years beyond. So to those of you defending these programs saying we can trust Bush, would you trust Hilary with them? If not, maybe you should think about why the framers of our constitution thought it was a good idea to limit the powers of the different branches of government.
And to agree with the earlier poster: Whoever's greenlighting chick films like "50 first dates" and "Phantom of the Opera" for testdriving a new medium needs a new job, preferably selling hot dogs on a street corner, to get an idea of what a market actually asks for.

What state do you live in so that I know never to move there?

It sounds interesting, but I really have to wonder how a movie like this fits into the post-Columbine world of today...

Hmm, Nintendo's releasing a new console this year.
Oh look, it's all white and shiny.
Hey, Apple makes white and shiny things...
OMG! Apple is going to buy out Nintendo! *hurries off to write an article*
