  1. Duh. on Microsoft Calls Today Global Anti-Piracy Day · · Score: 1

Of course pirates prefer the older versions, they're a lot easier to keep running while cracked.

I just don't think it's worth it anymore to pirate newer MS software, you're constantly playing catch-up with their latest Windows Genuine Advantage stuff.

I'm a gamer, and even I think this is ridiculous as a frontpage /. story. I think there are a couple of games that *might* squeeze into acceptability for the majority of readers, such as the KoTOR games, but Burnout?! It's an awesome game that just about anyone can get into - but it's just not /. material.

Also, it's published by EA. /. is the sort of place where people boycott companies like EA.

One day, a rather ordinary guy sees a really beautiful woman on the street. Before he can move to follow her, he finds himself holding a bag of goldfish. Apparently, the goldfish are ingested by a passerby who bumps into our ordinary guy. After helping him regurgitate the fish, the ordinary guy is recruited into a "superperformance group" called the Rub Rabbits. Their pitch to him is that the best way for him to see the woman of his dreams again is to stage an amazing performance for her. And thus begins your adventure.

    I'm not making this up.

Who the heck modded this up? The whole point of the contest wasn't to say "look at the best homebrew games we can make on the GBA/GP32/whatever" but to create a game with the same feel as an old Game & Watch game.

If you want to find more technically impressive homegrown GBA games, check out http://www.gbadev.org/ periodically. They'll usually link to the biggest new games, and you can almost guarantee that the author will have posted some tests or early releases to the Demos section too. You'll see a lot of clones/ports of old games, but some of them are well executed, particularly the Barbarian and Nebulus ports.

3rd-party tools such as XMP do indeed damage revenue, then, just as Linux and BSD damage Windows sales.

I'm not saying we as customers shouldn't have a choice, I'm just saying that from Company X's point of view a free competing product is definitely going to do some damage.

  22. Where does it say Mindstorms is gone? on Lego to Stop Producing Mindstorms · · Score: 3, Informative

I don't see anywhere where it explicitly says Mindstorms is gone, just a vaguely-worded mention of "electronics". They say their new mission is focusing on their own products, not the tie-ins, so that they have control over what they do - Mindstorms is owned by them, no? I took it to mean they were dropping the Star Wars line (which was cool, admittedly), the Harry Potter line, etc. and would stop making the video games (where presumably they are not responsible for making them, but license out the Lego name or contract other companies, either way they're not in control).

So until someone explicitly tells me the Mindstorms line is done, I'm not going to hold out any hope for seeing it in the clearance aisle.
