I get this image of you staying up at night worrying that your game library might be obsolete. I imagine that you spend hours of your time making 3 and 4 backups of every game and buying spare hardware just so you can play these games 15 years from now. Life is short, live for the present. If the games don't work 15 years from now, I am sure you will find other cheap ways to entertain yourself.
Err...no, but I'm awfully glad I'm still able to play classics like the original System Shock just as much as I'm able to play my 1980's copy of Trivial Pursuit. Just because it's not important to you doesn't mean other people don't value the ability to reply a game.
Let me guess, your one of those people who thought Circuit City's disposable DVDs (divx) was a good idea? Or you wouldn't mind if your board game spontaneously stopped working? Some of us like knowing our hard-earned money isn't going to be dependent on a company staying in business. Yes, we like to replay games that are 15 years old.
You sound pretty miserable. Have you considered the posibility that treating others with respect and appreciation may, in fact, make your life a little less unhappy?
And Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are two entirely DIFFERENT formats. Blu ray/HD DVD are similar, yet incompatible ways of recording data to a disc, Firewire/USB2 are similar yet incompatible ways of external data transfer. What the hell is your point?
There have been 45324 instances of the number '42' since I began reading Slashdot. Surely this is not a coincidence. It might be a message we are sending back to ourselves, the only question is what does it mean?
Because it's not "Your Online Rights", it's "Your Rights Online. Linguistically you could put the emphasis on "Your Rights", as in we are talking about rights in an online forum. But really, chill out...you're only the 10000th person to whine about such a petty detail.
You do realize that the word "holocaust" refers to mass death (usually by fire), and not just a single event that happened during WWII, right? Or were you just trolling?
Sorry to reply again, I remembered something right after I hit the submit button. In August of 2001 I emailed Rob Malda and asked him if he still cared about Slashdot. There was an article that sparked a lot of criticism, and CmdrTaco's response was "Eh, we'll get over it." Here are some of those links:
CmdrTaco doesn't read his own site. What does this tell you about how he feels about it?
Yes, that's been pretty obvious for the last couple years.
I don't read Kuro5hin much anymore for the same reason. Complaining about dupes will just drive him further away, even though he still has to work on it by contract.
You say that like it would be a bad thing. Maybe it's time he lost the presence, admit that's he's been burned out for years, and handed over the "reigns" to someone who cares enough about Slashdot to make the changes that are sorely needed. No one expects him to work at/. forever. If you can't find any pride in a job well done, maybe it's time to find another job...
Update For for the dupe. Not going well. Appreciate all the hate mail. Really encourages improvement.
Taco, you asshole, you've been duping stories for years. You've known about them and yet you've done nothing to fix the problem. Don't pull this sentimental BS about not "encouraging" improvement. If the fact that if Slashdot is your creation, and is your job, isn't enough "encouragement" for you to fix the problem of dupes, I don't think anything will be. From all appearances, it looks like you've given up on/. years ago.
Maybe Star Trek got the idea from someplace else, but it wasn't stolen from Contact. The ST:TNG episode in question aired in 1989 (Season 3) while Contact wasn't released until 1997.
Ah yes, the classic female heroine: able to leap ATM Machines in a single bound, able configure NIC Cards with her eyes closed, and never forgets PIN Numbers!
It got so bad with this game that I would be driving down the street and would start to see groups of buildings as commercial, industrial, or residential blocks. At it's peak I could have sworn that the buildings had yellow/blue/red colors underneath them.:)

LOL! This is the funniest thing I've read all day. Bravo!

That sounds like a great ad, where did you see it? (And is it online somewhere?)

Two things:
1) It's not our website.
2) We aren't being paid to post.
When you find a way to change those thigs, then you'll be able to accurately compare posters to editors.

Do you honestly think that reading is inherently better than TV. Is an art gallery inherently better than a bar?
Yes and Yes. Any more stupidly obvious questions you'd like answered?
You're just jealous 'cause I've been online chatting with hot babes.
Totally true. The grandparent poster appears to be Yet Another Humorless Nerd.
You do realize that the word "holocaust" refers to mass death (usually by fire), and not just a single event that happened during WWII, right? Or were you just trolling?
Sounds like you've taken the "tin-foil hat" theory and applied it to your house. Brilliant! :)

It's kind of depressing to see that these issues keep getting rehashed year after year.

If they were playing Testament instead of just straight D&D, I'm sure they wouldn't be running into any problems. :)
Ever notice that everyone who is for the death penalty has not commited any crimes against humanity?
Too much lately it's a bashfest for whoever can bash the most. It's time for Slashdot readers to grow up..
Lately? It's been that way for as long as I can remember. (nearly 5 years)
And there are others, like me, who use Firefox exclusively and have never seen this rendering bug that's mentioned from time to time.

Yeah, because we all know the people who were pissed about bnetd are the exact same people gushing over WoW. :rolls eyes:
