  1. Refresh rate on Octopuses Have No Personalities and Enjoy HDTV · · Score: 2, Funny

Waitaminute, exactly what type of screens were used in the experiment? CRT? LCD? plasma? DLP? OLED?

Getting answers to that question would go some way to determining wether it's the differing refresh rate of the image on the screens the octopi are seeing, or the actual framerate of the footage.

Everyone seems to be hung up with the framerate of the footage but forget that CRT & single chip DLP displays can have a noticable flicker whereas LCD (TFT), plasma (to some extent) & OLED are practically flicker free when a static image is being dispayed.

LED traffic lights are popping up here in the UK, too. I have to agree they do not always make a good substitute for the old incandescent bulbs.

Usually with LED traffic lights unless you're looking at them dead-on they don't shine very bright, and when you get in the line of sight of some they're almost blindingly bright even from a long distance away, day or night.

Didn't anyone actually do any real world tests of these things, or at least get some opinions of regular drivers? Unbelievable!

That's so true, people who have trouble using computers almost always have this preconception that because it's innards are complicated (really, how many people know how to build a chip from scratch?) that it must be complicated to use - this preconception hinders their ability to explore the OS/machine and see exactly what they can get out of it just by trying things.

The downside to this phonomenon is that if you happen to be ok/fairly good on a computer then all your friends who know nothing about them think you're some sort of genius and can do anything with them. I couldn't begin to count the number of times I've had that head-on-desk feeling when someone asks "you're good on computers, can you ....".

    Not feasable by any means.

For example, this Asus Eee uses around 15-23 watts when in use, and around 4 watts in standby. The area on the lid is enough to produce up to 6 watts of power from high efficiency solar cells in ideal sun conditions, but those conditiions would mean you couldn't see the screen because you'd need to angle it towards the sun and it would get extremely hot - have you ever touched a solar panel when it's sat in the summer sun for a length of time? you can almost burn yourself.

I'm suprised nobody's come up with a 'solar umbrella', something that's large enough to capture enough sunlight to power an average laptop and completely cover the user+machine from the glare+heat of the sunlight, yet folds away into an easily carryable bag.

I have four different sets of LCD glasses, but each of them suffer from a stumbling block that will always hold them back from mainstream gaming - cabling.

Setting up my Sony Glasstron PLM-S700E takes more than a few minutes because of the cabling needed to hook it into a console or a computer. You've got the main power pack, VGA + audio for a PC hookup & composite/s-video & audio for a basic console setup, then on top of that the cable between the controller unit and the glasses.
During use the most annoying cable is the one plugged into the glasses, firstly because it's too short and secondly because it exists. I know the eMagin have reduced the annoyance of the spaghetti cabling you end up with but have you seen their asking price? bloody dispicable, I was considering getting some but right when I was considering it they virtually TRIPLED the price overnight.

The first company to get Wii compatable wireless 3D LCD glasses at 640x480 (or higher) resolution and perfectly complimentary games for it could well make a killing, especially if the glasses had head tracking.

On the subject of head tracking, has anyone taken Johnny Lee's simply inspired head tracking hack any further? Use that with a projected screen to get a very wide viewing angle and you'd start forgetting you're actually looking at a 2D screen because of the feeling of immersion.

You're right about the phone companies not letting you know the cost-per-minute of the call beforehand is because your call times will be shorter (and/or call less often) and the odd $20,000 call charge dispute is nothing compared to what they make from people jabbering on like there's no tomorrow.

So the phone companies aren't going to do this, but why not the end user? with the ever increasing number of "smart" phones on the market, why can't someone write an application for them that will give you an accurate or estimate at what the call will cost before pressing the dial button?

Why can't mobile phones (& GPRS modem software for that matter) have the ability to pre-warn you how much the call is going to cost per minute before you press the dial button?

When you buy a product from a bricks'n'mortar or online store you're told up-front how much it's going to cost before you get out your cash/credit card/PayPal password
But not with mobile phones, usually you're either told just after the call ends how much credit you have left on your pay-as-you-go account or at the end of the month when your contract bill arrives in the post.
