while you can argue all day long about heaven or reincarnation I doubt anyone is going to take up the fight that machines will go to heaven or be reincarnated. Clone, maybe... but then the 'soul' could also multiply, and whatever it is that someone is trying to label as a soul would be as non-unique as a calculator...

I'd imagine sympathy from you isn't what they are looking for. Depression does have an effect on work output, so there is good reason to find a fix. The dog on the other hand may have behavioral issues that manifest with depression, which could be caused by medical issues. If the behavioral issues (I dunno, peeing in the house, chewing off it's own fur, etc) bother the owner and the dog, seems reasonable to deal with it. The bottom line is depression isn't always situational, and even when it is, there's no sense in wallowing in it or ignoring it if we want a happy dog at home or a productive scientist in space.

so how long will you test? what are the criteria to make it out of the test environment?

It seems a more reasonable approach would be to:

    1. pick software that is in wide enough distribution that exploits are published and patched quickly.

    2. Set up the production box on a private LAN. Scan the hell out of it. Lock it down. Scan it again.

If you think your team is going to find zero-day exploits... then you are either lost or secretly have the crack team (in which case you wouldn't be posing this question here;)

This leaves you with proven solutions, scan, lockdown/patch, scan. Then of course you'll need to keep the server/apps up to date and backed up. This is where most well intentioned admins fall short...
