1) That fits my example of 'stuff that doesn't play nice'. (And I work with some Zebra drivers myself, shipping and some internal labeling, they are a bitch...I use 3rd party if I can, Seagull, etc.)
2) I'm no SQL guru by any means, but why can't you just run multiple databases in a single SQL instance? I guess it could be some proprietary crap with licensing I suppose, but I would think for mose things you can consolidate them. I know we have some DBs that share a single instance.
And my main point was that it's just over-hyped, not useless.
Don't get me wrong, it definately had its uses and we do use it some where I work, but it's not the be-all end-all that VMWare and co. would like you to believe. Basically if you're not using it for:
a) Test environments
or
b) Services + apps that don't play well with others
then it is probably a waste of resources. Like you said, running a virtual machine for just an FTP server is absurd...."Let's use 50x the ram and hard drive space necessary for an FTP server!"
Funny you mention that, as the first excerpt from the Wikileaks summary covers elective transsexual surgery, and it's actually somewhat forgiving:
"Persons Who Are Considering or Have Undergone a Transsexual Operation
Persons who are considering an elective transsexual operation should not be baptized. Persons who have already undergone an elective transsexual operation may be baptized if they are otherwise found worthy in an interview with the mission president or a priesthood leader he assigns. Such persons may not receive the priesthood or a temple recommend."
The funny thing is, from a quick look at the Wikileaks summary (I didn't read the handbook itself), the handbook doesn't even seem that bad. Pretty standard Christian stuff, the Catholic church generally sticks to the same standards.
I am an attourney from the firm Dewey, Phucum, and Howe, contacting you on behalf of the company, Redundant, Overly-broad, Far-fetched, Lame and Completely Obscure Patents and Trademark Exploiting Registry, LLC. (Hereafter known as ROFLCOPTER, LLC). ROFLCOPTER, LLC. asserts that you have violated 1,337 of their patents in your 'BoxSearch' product and demand that you cease and desist all development and production and turn all assets over to ROFLCOPTER, LLC, along with eleventy billion dollars to cover legal expenses. Foremost among these patents is USPTO# 867,530,911, which covers "Any large box used in a manner that causes you to make large sums of money." Clearly your BoxSearch product is an exact copy of ROFLCOPTER, LLC.'s patent, and therefore you owe us 'large sums of money'.
We look forward to your large check.
Sincerely,
Harrison Richard Spallsitch (The guy on the back of the phone book...two from the right)
Amen....I remember researching something usually meant using several different search engines (Yahoo was more concise but lacking, Altavista had EVERYTHING but took a while to find the good results, etc), and if you wanted something useful, you better know how to use your +,-, and ""s.
Then Google comes around. You search for something and you find a good result (or three) on the first page, which was rare on Yahoo etc. unless you were looking for something really basic.
Wow. That's the first thing Hilary has said that I like.
Of course, whether or not this is yet another one of her statments where she was just saying what the crowd wanted to hear and probably has no plans to follow through is another matter entirely.
McCain's spokesperson probably didn't respond because she probably didn't know for certain. I would be willing to bet he's going to try and at least see it through on a normal schedule, since Bush had been pushing it. Could be wrong though.
That was a typo. It was supposed to say Spam (capital S). It invloves a plexiglass deflector for preventing globs of canned processed meat from hitting you.
HL2 and Doom 3 were both considered rather rough on the system requirements (They were released about the same time and were the next 'big' shooters with fancy new engines). I remember reading a lot of articles about "Will your computer handle HL2/Doom 3?" or "How to get your PC ready for HL2/Doom 3" etc. HL2 was definately friendlier to the system specs than Doom 3 was, but not by a very wide margin, and both were regarded much like Crysis is now (although not quite that extreme). Keep in mind HL2 is 3.5 years old...you may have first played it a year or two ago but it's been around a while. I remember getting a nice boost by upgrading my FX 5600 ($100 at that time and still considered a fairly modern card) to a 6800GT ($400 at the time and was one baby step down from the bleeding edge Ultra).
And not to discredit the art team...they did a great job, better than most (and looking at current source games, TF2 is absolutely brilliant). The point is, the system requirements were still quite high at the time.
A brand new game engine should be like that, otherwise it will be too short-lived. Look at games based on the Doom 3 and Source engines now...they look great and play great. Had they lessend the system requirements back then, we wouldn't be enjoying such good-looking games now.
I was about to pre-order Mass Effect myself. I'm usually a pretty staunch supporter of people paying for PC games, because the market needs all the help it can get, and they are reasonably priced in most cases. So I'll gladly pre-order games for full price to show my support for them. But when they pull shit like this it pisses me off. Now I'll either hold off of pre-orering and wait until the game gets cheaper and there is a no-CD/activatoin crack out, or just pirate the damn thing outright and play through it once.
You realize that those things have SAFETY SWITCHES?!?!
What are you supposed to do with that thing? I'm no gun expert....does the orange dot mean it's on or off?!?! And does on mean the gun is on or the safetey is on? Ahhh!!! I really don't want that kind of confusion in a deadly weapon! I'll stick with a sword. No buttons, switches, or triggers. Pointy end goes into human. Done.
We've had this where I work the past couple weeks. Several people get 100-200 Mail Delivery Failures and whatnot within a 24 hour period, and they call me about it panicking. Glad to know it's not just us.
Agree with helping to throw a party thing. I notice if I help women/girls do things like that, they begin to see me as a friend, and not a boyfriend, and where I have had success was when I didn't really go out of my way to help them with anything...they seemed to come to me. I've never had success with girls I saw that I liked, just with the ones I noticed that seem interested in me. (Apparently I'm halfway attractive and easy to get along with, so as long as I keep my mouth shut and don't bore them to death about computers, Star Trek, or anime, I can do alright.)
Really? Can it emulate the bio-neural circuitry found on the NCC-1701-E, or am I stuck with old-school isolinear circuitry emulation? (or god forbid, duotronics?)
Well it depends on how the revenue is viewed by the TV network, and that is the problem...if they're just seen as a little extra side revenue, then it's fine...but if they're seen as a major funding souce, then they are going to need to be more 'in-your-face'.
Subtle placement (ie. all cans of soda are Coke, all cars used are GM, etc) can make sales, but you're right, they're not as effective...but they still are effective to a degree, and worth paying something for.
So what you're saying is, it's a win-win for the TV networks....they can continue to not exert any creative effort and produce crappy shows no one likes, and make money on it like it was moderately successful.
And I don't mind product placement in shows as long as it's subtle. The giant-sized HP logos on laptops always makes me chuckle, but ruins the immersiveness of the show (seriously, they're bigger than the emblem on the 9040 monster printers we use).
200 years makes y'all a little cocky, eh? I think once this whole Iraq business clears up we should start the War of 2012...you got terrorists or animal rights activists up there we can use as an excuse, right? Better brush up on your UK relations, you're gonna need it (Not like it'll help).
Now to figure out how to put a 51st star on the flag and make it look good...
That statement just goes to show the stupidity of the people involved...two reasons:
1) The kids don't know Ubuntu/Gnome like they do Windows. Once they figure it out, they'll continue trashing them and installing games.
2) The morons should properly secure the computers in the first place. If user rights were properly limited in the first place, they wouldn't have had any issues with the Windows machines. And if they don't limit them properly on the Linux ones, they'll have the same problem.
You're right there, and if that moron is actually using Bose speakers he probably can't hear the difference either over all the marketing BS he listens to.
However, the biggest noticable improvment the average gamer can see is not necessarily in audio quality, but in game performance. By pushing audio processing off to the card, the CPU is less stressed and game performance can increase. This is not always immediately apparent, because idle framerates rarely increase much...it's during the action sequences with lots of different audio effects going on that an independent sound card can really make a difference. It smooths the framerate out. If you look at TFA under gaming performance, you will see what I mean...overall there is a pretty minimal framerate increase, but when you look at sudden dips in performance on the Realtek, you'll notice they are less severe on the higher-end Asus and x-Fi. (I don't like their choice of Vista on this, as it COMPLETELY changed the audio handling and drivers are still being refined for OpenAL. You'd see more of a difference on XP.)

I now want an old laptop for my kitchen. Why the hell didn't I ever think of this?!?!
Totally agree on virtualization...over-hyped BS.

Oh I beg to differ.

I'm sure it goes something like this:
copy c:\*.* f:\kiddie porn\
(or whatever the removable drive letter is)
Rental insurance is very cheap...I pay $190 per year for $45k of coverage.
I prefer to call it 'the bridge'. Now shut the door, you're letting sunlight in.
