Adobe has(had) 3 main Desktop publishing apps, each with its own domain:

Pagemaker: Executive Secretary and home stuff(Kinda like Photoshop Elements), wants something prettier than MS Word, or they already know Pagemaker. Still supported on Mac OS with a carbonized Pagemaker 7

InDesign: Direct competition with Quark, Finally serious competition with InDesign 3.

Framemaker: Large Technical documents with LOTS of references, standard formatting, stuff that BIG companies and their vendors care about.

There is very little competition between these products from each other or other companies besides than the Quark-Indesign thing. (esp on the Mac). Chances are that since Adobe has neglected the Mac Framemaker community for so long, they would have to create a carbonized version of Framemaker for anyone to take it seriously and they simply don't want to expend the resources to do it.

Have you ever tried experimenting with having your GF click the mouse while you are in bed and see if you can actually hear it? It might be you are being over sensitive to the sound around you since you are worried that you may wake her up. The problem with this analogy is that when you have to change a spark plug or improve something in your home you are working with something physical. People are usually able to grasp and retain that better than an abstract software issue that usually requires knowledge of other aspects of a computer's architecture, security issues, software compatibility, client/server relationships, etc.

Imagine instead that your father was a mathematician and you needed help with a vector calc problem. Do you think that he could teach you how to solve the problem without several years of supplementary instruction? Like it or not, computers, x86 based systems especially, require quite a bit of abstract knowledge in multiple areas to maintain effectively.

Actually the "Good Reason" that those scenes ended up being cut is that Peter Jackson was contractually obligated to deliver movies that were only 3 hours in length,(so theaters could maximize the number of times they could show it per day) with the understanding that he could then release DVD's with the special stuff later on. In a sense, they are not just taking scenes and sticking them back in, but really developing two different versions of the same film, the theatrical to appeal to the general audience and the extended DVD to appeal to the fans.

The FotR Extended version added so much to the movie that I know I could never appreciate the theatrical version again, and I'm willing to bet that Two Towers will be even better.

JuK actually looks and behaves like all the other apps on its desktop.

I have never understood this argument. Why would a user expect their MP3 player to look and behave like a word processor or web browser? To put it in more abstract terms, where is the expectation that a program designed for audio playback look and work like an app designed for text manipulation and display?

The extra buttons on the juk toolbar are there in the interest of consistency with other KDE apps.

Why would I want or need a save button in an app that deals with read-only data 99% of the time? I can see maintaining consistency between similar apps. If I open a web browser I should be able to refer to my previous experience using other web browsers and be able to navigate. However, if I launch Photoshop, there is a certain understanding that "Hey I'm using an app that is different than my audio player or web browser, things may not be the same"

Desktop integration should only dictate the look an feel of an app when nessecarry, but there should be enough leeway given to applications with fundamentally different paradigms to avoid unessecarry features and UI cruft.
