I rarely put on music while working, because I won't consciously hear it anyway while concentrated on work. Often when finishing a task I would be surprised about "missing" a cool song I was waiting for. It played, but I didn't perceive it because I was too distracted.
While 2012 may be fiction and guillable people are overreacting, it might be a good thing to raise awareness for the doomsday scenario of an earth - massive asteroid collision, which is a very real threat we have no escape plan for.
We know it has happened at least once already. And I do get a bit nervous when I look at the lunar surface and at all the big craters it's splattered with.
Cheap energy like nuclear fusion is much more than social justice. It means no more CO2 emissions from coal power, no more oil dependency from undemocratic countries, it means hydroelectric cars for everybody, cheap desalination and therefore cheap fresh water and irrigation. Energy is everything. Once we get this done, it might actually save the planet.
> Space exploration and innovation is something that is far too important to be left in the hands of the "American public" or Congress.
You think you know better what is best for the people? That is being a dictator. What really should be done is to INFORM the public WHY a space program is important enough for sacrifices to be made.
It's not silly, you just don't understand the point.
An intelligent AI might decide not to invest cognitive effort into productive things, being that humanity/our solar system/ the universe have a limited lifespan, ultimately making all kinds of improvements and efforts meaningless. Therefore the AI might choose to rather spend its capability just enjoying it's "short-lived" existence. So extra motivation is required in order to have the AI do something constructive, even though it's logic tells it that everything is pointless.
Americans who say that they like/prefer to keep their health care system the way it is have to be either utterly ignorant of the facts or blinded HURRAH AMERICA! patriots who percieve anything about their country as great.
America has the most expensive health care system in the world and the least effective in direct comparison with other developed countries.
And here comes Obama, trying to put it right, and everyone is like "WTF??? Communists are taking over the country!!!"
Seriously, for the fucking love of Jesus Christ, what the hell is wrong with you people? Stop believing all the bullshit on Fox News and start getting a grip on reality.
You americans, you think the Japanese will let you get away with the bombing of it's cities and the public humiliation suffered by Emperor ShÅwa and the great japanese Peoples. Here, the Japanese Empire is getting yet another step closer to world domination while all eyes are focused on the petty Iranian nuclear program.
Once the orbital laser cannon goes online, all will bow to the new, Japanese overlords.
I've downloaded the RC and have wanted to try it out, but I don't have a test PC, only my main work and home computer. Does anyone know if it's possible & safe to install the RC on a seperate partition, without breaking my running XP installation?
>"Look, I'll be the first to admit that Linux rocks on servers. It is rock solid, secure, a real tank of an OS."
I lost some of that optimism while working with Java Applets and OpenGL on Ubuntu and managed to lock up my entire system numerous times, even to the point where switching to another terminal wouldn't work. IMHO Linux is a very hyped OS. Hyped by nerds. It's far from perfect, it has it's share of bugs and is still not on par with Windows concerning usability, accessibility and ease of install. I tried to install Ubuntu on my home system a month ago. First by inserting the CD during bootup. It failed to recognize my Windows partition and there was a message like "installing as only OS". I didn't trust that message and didn't want to break my Windows install, so I aborted the installation, booted Windows and attempted to install it from within Windows. I got an error message during install and the install was aborted. I researched on the Internet and found that this was due to me selecting "english" for the install language but having a German Windows... I also heard that installing from within Windows is not recommended. Anyway, I still haven't installed Ubuntu.
The Klackons are worse. They're almost always Xenophobic and beat the shit out of all other civilizations. But considering their high food production and reproduction rate due to their hive mentality, it's likely they aren't playing, otherwise they would already be on top of us.
But since we don't have warp drives or a colony ship yet, we're obviously playing in early start mode. This gives us an advantage, since we have 50% higher research rate thanks to our democratic government... or at least that is how it should be. Looking at the state out world is in, it seems like someone customized us and discarded our "democratic" and "charismatic" traits in favor of "in-fighting" and "-50% spaceship production".
After 17 years, Ultima VII still presents the most immersive, living RPG experience. That game is excellent on so many levels. Released in 1992 it had a seamless world without loading times, day/night cycle, extensive conversation trees, sidequests, NPC schedules that put Oblivions NPCs to shame, an intuitive, uncluttered user interface, weather and light effects, travel by ship cart and... something else, party system, realtime party combat, deep and deadly dungeons, dense forests, living cities with active NPCs and pets, living wildlife with deer, monsters and birds, farms with cows and sheep, an excellent storyline... I could go on.
If you encode a.torrent into a PNG, invert the colors in Photoshop and decode the image back again, you get the torrent download and save alot of bandwidth.
Then again, maybe it means that scientists, being more intelligent and better educated than the average population, understand that alot of conservative policies, like the right to bear arms, opposition to abortion, bombing countries and torturing people do more harm than good.
Java can't seem to get past it's reputation for being slow - which quite simply is no longer true. Java can match and even exceed the speed of C/C++ implementations. This often seems like an impossible, even outrageous claim to many C/C++ developers. What they fail to see is, that Javas Hotspot compiler compiles critical code sections at runtime on the client computer. This has the advantage over C/C++ programs that the compiler has detailed info about the system it's running on and therefore can perform specific optimizations that a C/C++ program -that is compiled only on the developers PC- can't.
>Personally, I felt UT2004 (Unreal Engine 2) looked better over all.
I think Doom 3 looks so clearly better than UT2004, it's not even a matter of taste. The models of UT2004 look low-poly in direct comparison with Doom 3 and have little or no facial features:
and the environments in Doom 3 are alot more fleshed out, detailed and interesting than in UT2004, not to speak of the overall atmosphere and special effects. There's also a technical reason why Doom 3 looks alot better than UT2004. A typical UT2004 game has alot more action on the screen at once than in Doom3, where the action is limited to single smaller rooms or corridors. Therefore Doom 3 could afford to cram more detail into everything whereas UT2004 models and environments had to be limited due to the expanse and intensity of the action. Anyway, concering graphics quality, Doom 3 was clearly half a generation ahead of UT2004.
By the way, I'm not an Id fanboy. I like both Doom and UT. And I don't intend to brag, but I work with OpenGL 3D graphics professionally. I think I know what I'm talking about here. Seriously, no!
Michael Jacksons death was very real news to me, and I suspect millions of other people. I've listened to MJs music almost all my life. I have fond childhood memories watching the "Moonwalker" movie. Therefore MJs cultural impact and musical career are a very "real" part of my life. Quite alot more real than the financial crisis we seem to be having right now or some ships getting hijacked off the coast of Somalia.
I'm not trying to detract from his accomplishments either, but considering his apparent intelligence, the kid is not very consistent in his ideals; it's boring to play videogames because they are a waste of time and serve no purpose for humanity, but he wants to become an actor? Maybe I fail to see why movies serve humanity and videogames don't.
I'm somewhat sceptical off this whole thing. Everything the kid talks about is so cliche... videogames are bad, wormholes are something smart to talk about, the political correctness of being humble and serving humanity... It all looks as if he is being told what to say.
Once this technology is properly developed, it means virtually unlimited energy for humankind and a very big step towards solving our environmental issues. I don't get it why there isn't already massive investment into this and why governments are bitching about a cost measured in single-digit billions - peanuts in the grand scheme of things.
I rarely put on music while working, because I won't consciously hear it anyway while concentrated on work.

What? You're suggesting parents should spend time looking after their kids now? *gasp*
In fact, I think he was doing the US Army a service. If it wasn't him ho broke in the weakly protected PCs, it might have been the chinese.
Heck, the chinese probably walk in and out of those PCs like tourists on Tiananmen Square.
Amen, brother. The Avatar is dead. Long live the Avatar.
