90% market share is not why Windows gets all the spyware and viruses. It's the weak security model and buggy coding.

Even if everyone in the world started using OSX, there would never be as many viruses and spyware affecting the system as there are on Windows. First, no one runs as root on OSX, which is what you're effectiv ely doing on Windows, unless you specifically know better. Second - no Active X to install the nasties in the first place.

It may be the case that Windows is slowly but surely patching up the chinks in the armor, but OS X is much more secure to begin with.

I didn't say there weren't cheaper notebooks out there. But "cheap" and "good value" aren't the same thing. The iBook has no shared video memory, 5 hour battery life, no viruses or spyware, and runs a beautiful and solid BSD OS. The Dells feel pretty flimsy to me and I would *never* buy another Compaq machine again after some of the horror stories I've had with client machines.

I disagree. I think Apple hardware is getting much more affordable. I feel pretty strongly that a G4 iBook at $999 (add $25 for an extra 256 MB RAM aftermarket) is one of the best deals out there.

That may be because I just bought one, but I did my research first, including having a couple of other laptops at home to play around with. A laptop "similar" to the iBook for $300 less would simply be a cheap laptop, and that's *not* a good deal.

In either event you can expect to be paying for the incoming calls unless they happen to use a premium number. I'd also assume that it will cost more than making outgoing calls.

Maybe in Skype's case, but not always. I'm currently using a program called Stanaphone which has a real US phone number with completely free incoming calls. I've been using it for a couple of weeks and have not given them any credit card information. Outgoing calls are done just like Skype with a calling card model and cost about 2.5 cents a minute in the US. Until Skype brings down the cost of SkypeIn a bit, I'll probably stick with it.

No fancy ringtones, no camera etc. Batteries and accessories are cheap, and the thing is solid as a rock. No problems with reception, and it's not brick heavy, either.

This is because I bought a fancy, camera/color screen/PDA phone from T-Mobile when I opened my acount a year ago and it *sucked*. No reception whatsoever, random blinkouts where the OS would become responsive. Whatever - I don't need no stinkin' fancy pants phone.

The best part is that you can do a straight single roast, or you can pick and choose your favorite varietals and create your own blend, or you can buy pre-blended greens from somewhere like SweetMarias which can be pretty awesome too.

I would have to argue the point about so many better choices available in New York City - I can count them on one hand. (Joe, 9th St Espresso, Gimmee Coffee and Gorilla...that's about it, in my experience.)

Even when someone is using reasonably fresh beans (consider Oren's or Porto Rico, for example), the barista is often so poorly trained that the espresso comes out bitter and over extracted. The coffee sits on the pot for an hour. Whatever. At least with Starbucks you get consistent mediocrity, which is sometimes all you can ask for.

  25. Re:why is starbuck's the benchmark? on Coming Soon: Self-Heating Coffee · · Score: 1

Starbucks coffee is pretty lousy, but from time to time they do turn out a decent espresso based drink. Certainly better than 90% of the restaurants I go to. There are a few coffee shops in New York City (my frame of reference) that do better espresso, but surprisingly not many.

I'm always amazed to find out that most people who open coffee shops have little to no interest in the quality of the coffee they serve. When pressed, they're just as likely to say "I'm more of a tea person."

As an absolute espresso fanatic, this is painful to hear. But none of the shops around me are particularly good, so outside of my home, my choice is inevitably Starbucks.

And by the way, while your equipment is nearly as important as the coffee you choose (especially when it comes to cleanliness and temperature), it is in no way more important. Without high quality, freshly roasted and freshly ground beans, your coffee is crap, no matter what you think.
