KaZaa is not a "primary player" - they aren't a player at all. The only time that KaZaa's content overlaps the content of PressPlay is when it is illegal content
Legality is not the issue. KaZaA/Fasttrack is the most widely used source of digital music downloads. If pressplay doesn't realize and act based on that fact, they're delusional.
It doesn't matter that it may lead to a lower quality end product, the fact is consumers *love* convenience, and are willing to trade off all sorts of other sources of value to get it.
To lots of people, convenience means less time worrying about something. Lots of people just *won't* do something unless it's convenient, simply becuase they don't have the time.
Why do you think people don't vote, or write their congresscritter about important topics? Why is it that McD can sell warmed up shit for $4? Why is it that people can't be bothered to figure out Linux and put up with the shite that M$ deliver?
Simple, they don't have time to deal with it.
[OBWIFI] it's my opinion that any technology (ie, WiFi) that increases convenience for the average user is good, as it increases their time to exercise other freedoms. Likewise, any technology (ie, proprietary.doc format) that reduces conveniance is a hindrance to society, and therefore evil.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, That each and every free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years (except as is herein after excepted) shall severally and respectively be enrolled in the militia
Guess that means not me. Has this syntax bug been fixed yet?
I can see this doing quite well. 200k songs ~ 18k albums ~ 500 shelves ~ 100 sq foot CD collection ~ 1/2 a small record store excluding duplicates ~ a small record store including duplicates.
First, it's 2000 songs, not 200,000 as you state. That's at best 200 CD's assuming 10 songs. Considering that there are on average maybe 25 or so music categories (ie, Alternative, Rock, Blues, Broadway_&_Vocalists
Children's, Music, Christian_&_Gospel, Classic, Rock
Classical, Country, Dance_&_DJ
Folk, General, Hard, Rock_&_Metal
International, Jazz, Latin, Music
Miscellaneous, New, Age, Opera_&_Vocal
Pop, R_&_B, Rap_&_Hip-Hop
Rock, Soundtracks) that's 8 albums per category. Not a "small record store including duplicates" by any means.
Secondly, this music will grow old. Sure, they can download new stuff from Pressplay, but how many poeple are going to do that over their 56k lines?
Ultimately, I think this is an interesting idea, but will not be an overnight success. Then again, Pressplay probably needs all the users it can get, so I doubt they're worried about piracy (as if KaZaa/etc weren't already the dominant players).
What are they going to do then? I didn't link anywhere and someone else in kids.us could link to me...
So now, are you.kids? If so your URL will be de-listed, since you are doing the illegal outside linking. If not then they couldn't link to you anyway. Either way someone would get delisted for outside linking or hosting inappropriate content.
Of course this raises the question: what is inappropriate content?
The GPL license puts restrictions on what you can do.
Technically true, but missing the point.
The GPL gives you rights above and beyond normal copyright law, but those rights come with restrictions, to ensure that you don't go trampling other people's similar rights.
Most other liscences (that are not BSD style, or public domain) do not do a good enough job of balancing the rights of the individual vs. the community.
Shinobi does in fact look rather neat, but I think it too, falls prey to the "3d-ization" of it's popular side scroller parent, take a look at some screenshots
On the other hand, every time someone looks to the United States and envies our elections, our freedoms, our optimism, that is a victory in the war on terrorism. And with enough victories like that, I think that the world can truly become a safer place.
So what do you think happened this last Tuesday? Notable victory? or Progress towards 1984?
Personally, I believe Americans deserve the government they have. Take from that whatever you wish to construe.
I think that since this is a 64 bit chip, why not compare it with other 64 bit consumer desktop chips (ie, AMD Clawhammer)? A lot of Intel's questionable moves (12K micro-ops instruction cache?) for the P4 were obviously not copied by AMD, and x86-64 seems to be the 64 bit desktop chip of the future.
Isn't this how it has been in Europe and other countries since the beginning? I remember it costing a lot more to call someone on a cell phone from a landline when I was in England. Just another one of those things that Americans will have to get used to, that everyone else seems to have acclimated to already.
Yeah, but when I was in France and Germany last year, all cell phones had free incoming minutes to compensate... I doubt we'll get that luxury here.
*thwack*... Is that the sound of the consumer getting screwed again?
What's to stop airlines from demanding passengers from purchasing "safe" products and completely banning mainstream electronics on planes, and in return making us pay more money for redundent electronics?
Almost there....
Forget about just the extra cost, now the big baddies (RIAA/MPAA/M$) have a chance to slip in DRM as added "safety". Cash cow is one thing, the opportunity to put the genie back in the bottle (at least for a smaller, but significant market) is much more enticing.
A friend of mine had a great idea... which I eventually used... a closet PC.
For those of you with the advantage of having a closet in your room (ie, not living in a college dorm), just putting a door (sliding or closing) between yourself and your beast can probably reduce your PC to fanless levels (I barely hear my monitor more than my PC in da closet).
My PC: Athlon 900 w/stock fan, 4x80GB IDE drives, geforce2mx video, 300W PS + LOTS of fans
Challenges: 1) ACPI on my mobo sucks, and I can't resume with my wireless keyboard as easy as I'd like to 2) CDRW/DVD drives are still on the unit; I'd like to replace them with firewire/usb2 external devices, but haven't had the cash to do it.
Im interested in knowing if anyone else has opted for this low-tech, low-noise solution?
If it's a really lightweight app, it should run on a PocketPC.
Typical slashbot that didn't read the article, eh?
It uses P2P, with a no-server, freenet style data distribution model... think that's lightweight???
Well, even if the binary was small enough to fit on an ARM based proc, you would still have problems with the amount of bandwidth and always-on connectivity that P2P implies.
Now if they managed to make some soft of satellite *mobile* program that attaches to your always-on desktop/laptop app, that would rule... but then again, that would be a different approach, and so far, this project is still vapor.
1) Movie going is more than just the movie, it's an *experience*... sometimes even shitty movies can be fun to watch with the right people. I'll never forget watching The Matrix on opening night in the AMC Mercado and the hearing *entire* audience cheer watching Trinity pull gravity defying stunts. 2) Home theatres have seperate purposes from the megaplexes. I would love to watch a single movie over and over at home, but for new films, I would much rather see them on the big screen. 3) EP1 and EP2 both sucked, IMHO. Perhaps that's why lucasfilms is feeling a bit of a pinch?
The REAL question is how your comment is ranked as Score:5,Troll

Wait until Kazaa Lite is released before you go downloading it. Unfortunately www.kazaalite.com doesn't work any more but doa2.host.sk [doa2.host.sk] (which is where www.k-lite.tk points to) does.
It's there. Here's the link

"I think this deal... reflects a growing recognition by Madison Avenue that video games have become mainstream entertainment with a large and desirable demographic target," EA spokesman Jeff Brown told Reuters.
Brown said the game was appealing to Intel and McDonald's because almost all of its players are young people, with nearly 50 percent of them young women
Well, said that's a desireable target demographic... ppl who spend lots of money on fast food, and get lots of money spent on them (by parents). Sounds like your average college-goer.
It appears they've removed roaming access from Netscape. This allowed for remote storage of bookmarks on a properly configured server... but for me it was a nearly invaluable service
This would help me win over countless other developers where I work, to use the lizard.
I wonder if a DDOS attacks on the clearing house will convince very many people this is a bad idea?

Someone got nabbed. And whoever does that kinda shit again will get labeled as a "terrorist" and treated like Jose Padilla.

It is a pig on my 700 Mhz Athlon.
Try the Phoenix project instead. It really is decent, even on my slow-as-hell P!!! 500.

Hate to break it to you, but having the large amount of gasoline fuel in today's vehicles that we do, there's a WHOLE LOT MORE potential energy.

Conspiracy theory? Perhaps.

Follow the money. Who is the most likely to gain by supporting these PanIP dumbasses?

I think that it'll pan out soon, despite the setbacks in legislation
