  10. Re:Odd on Smart Rubber Promises Self-Mending Products · · Score: 1

The 'self-healing' rubber will not as strong as regular rubber, due to the fact, as you pointed out, that they are removing the ionic and covalent bonding between the molecules. The summary of this article is very bad though... It makes it out that they have removed all covalent and ionic bonding although that can not be the case, because that is what makes up a molecule and distinguishes it from other materials. The must have made the rubber in such a way that the molecules do not bond together making poly-molecules (as in PVC which turns vinyl chloride from a material that has no strength as a gas, into the very useful material we are all familiar with) but rather individual molecules that have many hydrogen dipoles that make it stick together. The effect is very similar to water, which has has a good bit of hydrogen bonding going on and keep water as a liquid up to 100 degrees celsius when many other molecules that size will be gases even at extremely low temperatures. Hydrogen bonding is very easily broken and reformed, partly do to how weak it is in comparison to other forms of bonding, but it works very well for this type of application.

In a free-market world with supply and demand determining costs, it makes sense that digital information that is in infinite supply will cost nothing. The things that are listed in TFA are things that can not be distributed infinitely and thus help guide artists and software providers toward adding valuable content that customers will pay for. Maybe sometime soon we will see less lawsuits and more content.

  16. Re:Advantages? on The Last DC Power Grid Shut Down in NYC · · Score: 1

There are indeed some advantages to direct current. Most electronics use direct current and have to convert from ac to dc between the device and the outlet, this causes some inefficiencies. The main problem with dc current is that it can not be transmitted over long distances without a lot of power loss, which is why our grid is in ac, despite the fact that everything runs on dc. If you had an in-house generator then dc power might be the way to go.

  17. Illegal? on Wi-Fi Piggybacking Widespread · · Score: 1

If using unsecured wifi without permission is illegal, then the law is completely unenforceable. In modern residential areas it is not uncommon to be able to access around 10 connections, many of which are unsecured. Regular people do not care which access point they are connected to. Computers will usually pick the strongest unsecured signal (barring that the computer in question is not defaulted to the owner's wifi) making many homeowners in neighborhoods accidentally break the law. Laws like this need to be better examined before the are enacted.

There is a time and place for both local and remote services on computers. The WGA has to be remote because windows is cracked so easily on a local scale (not that WGA poses to much of an obstacle). Things like google documents is useful for having a decentralized work environment for papers and makes collaboration easy.
