This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. The whole point of putting computers in schools is to get kids aquainted with them and for them to get to know how to work them.
If the computers in a certain school run Linux, what happens to those kids when they go on to higher schooling or get a job somewhere? It's quite likely they won't run Linux there, and many kids will have no clue what to do.
It seems that with the state of things right now, it'll just cause more harm than good.
You're right about the marketing thing. My little sister told me the other day that she wanted Windows XP. I asked her why, since what we have (Win2k) is running flawlessly and does everything we need it to. Her reply was that the commercials made it look cool.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA. Okay, your post was quite amusing.
1) PC games & hardware upgrades are cheaper then concoles
If the people have the "crappy" computer for work or school, they'd need to do a LOT of upgrading for most modern games to run well. Video card (which can be more than a console itself sometimes), RAM, CPU... you have to have a pretty fast computer to run today's games, and it's just going to get worse. The consoles will last for years to come without any upgrades. Will your computer? Most likely not.
3) The PCs get both the "cool new ideas"
This is the most laughable thing I've ever heard. Consoles ALWAYS get the strange new ideas. Jet Set Radio, Dance Dance Revolution, Fantavision, Chu-Chu Rocket, Vib Ribbon, Super Monkey Ball... the list could go on FOREVER. PC games are almost NEVER innovative. They constantly release the SAME GAME over and over with prettier graphics and maybe a few new features, but they're still the same damn game.
Finally, the PS2 is really designed to capture the "we can not afford a computer or DVD player" market
Actually, it's more aimed at the "we actually want to play games" market. Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, FFX (today!), etc. These games have everyone raving, and are what most people buy their consoles for. People don't buy consoles because they're too cheap to buy a computer. They buy consoles because they know that the games will kick some hardcore ass, and they won't have to worry about "can my system run this?" or "which version of DirectX do I need to play this?".
... and the fact that it's being made by Micro$hit!!! They're EVIL and you shouldn't buy ANYTHING from them! In fact, you should buy an XBox, fill the drive with ANTHRAX, then send it back to M$$$$$$ saying it doesn't work!!! DOWN WITH MICRO$HAFT!!!!!!!!!111211!!!

Summoning is different from how it used to be. Summoned monsters now take the place of your party, and you command them like any other party memeber. The extremely beautiful animations CAN be turned off if you desire.
If I had been in that position, I'd take the goods, but not let it affect my judgement at all. If the product was crap, I'd say it was crap. If it was good, I'd say it was good... but damnit, I'd keep the stuff!
The database says, "Hey. Look at all these people who don't usually buy Coke when it's $6.99 a case. However, when it's $4.99 a case, they buy it. Now, you end up making more money this way!"
The reason they can release early like this is that they're only doing a limited release. Obviously it takes a long time to make all those CDs, so they're releasing what they have on the 18th now and then more later. It was actually supposed to be a "stealth" release of 500,000 units, but apparently it got waaaaaaaaay too much publicity, so it's the official release date now.
It all depends on what kind of game you like. There are pretty much two groups, Console-style (where it's focused more on storytelling and character development, but is more linear) and PC-Style (where it's typically not as focused on the story, but is nonlinear).
I, personally, hate doing 5,000 fetch quests just to figure out what I have to do in the game, so I'm a fan of console-style RPGs. The stories are typically MUCH more indepth (silly anime plots? did you even pay attention to the games?) and just, to me, more fun overall.
Well, saying something like "Paying with a credit card is highly reccomended when paying through PayPal" wouldn't seem dangerous, but would get the message across, IMO.
I have never myself had a problem with PayPal, but others have had some. Some good advice:
1) Transfer all money out of your PayPal account IMMEDIATELY. This doesn't give them a chance to freeze it.
2) Tell your bank to not allow PayPal to withdraw from your account without your authorization. I've heard of them dipping into the checking account if the funds aren't in the PayPal account.
3) Having your customers pay with credit cards... that way if anything happens they can dispute the charges.
Hopefully with these precautions you should be okay.
It's the same thing with MUDs and MMORPGs. Sure Everquest and DAOC might look damn nice, but I cannot (no matter how hard I try) keep from going back to good old MajorMUD. Sure it may only be text, but it's the most addictive game ever created (Diablo 2 comes in a close second).
They had to have had at least a couple games in mind - My guess is that they bought it when it came out for the DVD player, but were really waiting for FFx and other games to come out.
Think about it, would you buy a $299 DVD Player/Game Machine for just DVDs when you could buy a standalone DVD player with more features for $200?
A patch being written is NOT the issue. The issue is that people don't UPDATE their machines. I'm sure there are plenty of Linux users out there who wouldn't patch, and plenty of Windows users as well who wouldn't patch.
Sure, the Linux hole MAY get patched more quickly, but that really has to do with the person who runs the box caring more. I'd say the average *nix user cares a lot more about this kind of thing than the average Windows user.
Oh, and I would just like to point out the fact that the following phrases are not, and never were, funny:
"Micro-suck", "Micro-Shaft", "Micro$oft", "Micro-Shit", "Windoze", etc.
That would be incredibly stupid. Part of the objective of this is to win over the Afghan public. Killing that many innocent civilians wouldn't put us in good standings with them. We're going to be as careful as possible to not kill any civilians.
Not only are we hitting the military installations, but we're being EXTREMELY careful not to take any civilian lives. Combined with that, we're dropping food and supplies to the Afghan people. It seems like our strategy is to disrupt the military of Afghanistan, and pave the way for a sort or revolution by the people.

That ratio is mostly due to the fact that basically everywhere FORCED you to bundle games with the system.
