  1. Immutable OSes on Anti-Rootkit Security Beyond the OS · · Score: 2

Bah. Back around the turn of the century I constructed the most hack-proof OS install ever. My FreeBSD-running-Squid solution mounted the entire OS off of a CD-ROM, created a 2MB RAM disk, mounted it as /etc and copied the entire /etc directory from floppy disk. After booting, it unmounted the floppy disk and I called the NOC to eject it, creating a 1cm air gap between the read-write heads of the floppy drive to the floppy disk contents. The collocation space and bandwidth were free and the floppies and CD-Rs cost $.10 each. If I ever suspected rootkits I would just shut the machine down as I had half a dozen of these 1U servers, at $100 each off eBay! Take that cloud computing and McAfee ROMs!

I didn't even hit the brakes -- what was the point? Amazingly, he didn't budge.

I recall a story I heard from someone years back, when MS spoke at a conference of UNIX geeks. A man stood up and criticized MS's POSIX subsystem for Windows NT 4.0, stating that a feature in Korn shell wasn't compatible with true Korn shell. The conversation went something like this:

UNIX geek: Feature X in your korn shell implementation isn't true to the korn shell spec. Wnen do you plan to fix that?

MS guy: We're certain it's copmatible with the standard. Are you sure you don't have it wrong?

UNIX geek: Yes, I'm sure. It's broken.

MS guy: And who are you?

    UNIX geek: I'm David Korn.

May or may not be true, but it was an amusing story, nonetheless.

And then when you do lie, and you do eventually get through to a 2nd-tier tech, immediately tell the truth. Those people understand the terms "ICMP", "DHCP" and "MAC Address".

How is it that Excite @Home can go out of business when they essentially have a CORNERED MARKET?

They pay mentally challenged Canadians $7.00 an hour (that's about $0.35 in American money) to answer the phone and follow a script. If the script doesn't work (you answer a question out of order, you answer a question twice, you keep saying "bananas", etc.) then they schedule an American flunkie at $9.50 an hour (that's about $47,620.03 Canadian) to roll a truck to your house.

Because of the 2,000 mile (3,774,523 kilometre) geographical separation, however, you'll certainly have to be home between the hours of 1:00 AM and 11:00 PM more than once.

Not training their technicians on Windows XP before its release date doesn't surprise me at all. If the broadband providers were business savvy at all they'd hire phone techs competent enough to reduce company vehicle utilization in the first place.
