I use my CueCat daily. I altered the GNU barcode library to be able to print text labels above the barcodes, and then I made a small python app to generate random barcodes and then take a list of album names and print the barcodes with the labels above the random barcodes. Then I made an Gnome applet that changes your XMMS playlist depending on the barcode you can into the applet's text box (you also have to build a text file with barcode/file relationships for the applet to read.

I'm thinking about distributing it once I get the GNU barcode label code cleaned up. I blindly added code to the library without understanding how it really worked (though it probably has bugs, it does seem to work fairly well).

You should try FreeBSD then, with its ports collection. I first tried FreeBSD a couple of months ago because it was difficult getting my USB mouse working in linux, and my ATA/66 controller wasn't supported. I installed the unstable (-current) freebsd 4.0, and my hardware worked out of the box (save for the learning curve of configuring the kernel, and otherwise using a BSD system). I actually spent as much time trying to get my hardware working on a platform that I knew as I did learning a whole new one AND getting the hardware working. I can't play QIII on it or use my video capture card, but dual-booting is a small price to pay for the ports collection.

I did try Debian linux a while back, but the very thing that turned me away was the dpackage that ran during installation

I don't know how big one's modules directory is upon a fresh install of linux, but you have to take that into consideration (you don't want to have to insert the CD when you install a new piece of hardware so it can copy the module to your HD do you (although all the linux users I know compile their own kernels anyways)). Plus, which distro/version were you using... you would have to compare a linux distro from 1995 with Windows 95. Mac OS 7 fits on 6 diskettes, and one doesn't usually use everything that comes on those diskettes but it wouldn't be fair to compare this, since it was released in 1991 (I believe)

I think that the idea that such problems are isolated to Americans is false. Firstly, the "common" people have always been entertained by simple things (for example: Roman public executions, vaudeville, sport). Believe me when I write that not everyone enjoyed a lovely five hour political debate with a dinner intermission. Secondly, I believe that there are enough people who are capable of more. Shows like the X-Files wouldn't have lasted so long if this weren't true.

Sure, most of the stuff played on television is crap but this is most likely true of any television network in any country. Meaning that the junk:quality ratio is probably static.

If one wants an epic tale he will almost always be disappointed in television. Movies and books are the sources for epic tales, and television is the source of "quick" entertainment (simpsons, south park, etc).

Now that that's cleared up, I don't know anything about apple insider, but if it is a rumor site, then /. shouldn't be posting articles from rumor sites. If apple insider is just an apple news site, then that's fine.
At least they corrected the issue later on, most ''professional'' news sources tell out right lies, and skew the news w/out ever admitting they were wrong.
