This shipping product to your retailer/resailers just to have it round trip and come back to you later is called 'stuffing the channel' its an old trick. Sales Scum (tm) use it all the time to inflate numbers at the end of a quarter. If they (RIAA) is going to count numbers by the overly simple math then lets beat them at their own game. I say we setup a "Retailer" that never sells anything but just orders shipments like crazy. This "Retailer" Hoovers up as many units as they can ship. Then it just turns around and ships them back as unsold stock. We might even be able to work out a deal with the delivery companies to not even deliver the units just move them from the shipping dock to the recieveing dock at the distribution points.
Jebus they still make paper and ink(toner) fax machines. Wow better get one fast make a killing when the Smithsonian comes calling for the americana display. What kinda ludite do you have to be to have a phone number connected some device that spits out dead trees and sucks toner like gas in a SUV? buy a modem circa 80s, and a similar quailty PC, install free OS dejour and write those faxes directly to the HD, look at them and only print the ones that are worth it. If your uber cool you just turn them into PDF (ps if your still in luddite mode) and email them to your self. If you cant figure out how todo all of this then you DESERVE to kill a billion trees and stain all your cloths with toner.
If the US can so call intelligence community can be fooled into sending out alerts based on a Sega game how hard can it be fore AlQuda to send out false threats to yo-yo with the servalince. Since all this does is tell real people to do things sooner or later they will get tired and ignore the warnings thus allowing for a real threat to go further then it would without the DOS attack. I mean the terrorist aholes should start scaring people left and right, force the threat level up and down. How much risk is there to leak false intelligance.. then not follow through. Sooner or later we will get fed up, let our guard down and whamo they get a free ride. Jebus I really should wash my gray hat its looking darker and darker every day.
RAID protects against the hardware failure. User Error can still delete things. Thats why you use snapshots. Copy in all the data to the raidded failsystem. Then snapshot(lock all the inodes). If you do it correctly You can even keep the filesystem writeable and then every now and again when your sure everything is cool, take a second snapshot. Remove the older snapshots when space is needed. About the only thing that will kill this is kernel FS corruption or a drunk admin removing and delteing snapshots but since that would take several command line mistakes on it can be assumed that the enduser is trying to be a dick and in that case there is backup system that is safe
Ugh, moving VFS out of system memory and into dedicated memory on the HD doest make it any better. Its still not perminate storage. And when you do hit that memory critical you swap out memory to memory.. instead of just skipping the swap. It seems like this is really targed against PAE or 64bit chips. Bah I like my memory where it belongs swaping out early just becouse the OS doest know that its just a one big memcpy is LAME.
Isnt this one of the major reasons why you should plan on signing over you copyright to FSF so they can make sure that its available and that the protections are ensured even after death. Another option would be to setup a family trust and put the code as IP in the trust, this allows for all you anti-GPL swine to retain your rights. Of course if your family trust votes to GPL your work about all you can do is roll over and fart dust.
Bah host files to block ads, Jebus your stuck in the 90's. All the Kewl CiDs are using hacked CSS sheets. Even Mozilla.org has example CSS sheets to kill ads mine even works on slashdo^h^h^h.. quick run they are on to us.
Uh wont trivial obfsucation defeat this? Really we need to invest time into stenography as it should defeat this process. The university deplopment doesnt make much sense as one good CS major will tell everyone else to use steno and whamo everyone defeats it. You might have a play where users dont know each other or dont commuincate much to each other ala ISP.
Finally we can put Stern.. and real boobies on TV (other then the stiffs on CSI). I mean this with the Vchip, all we need is Cable/Satalite STB's that have the same thing in them.. then we let loose all the programming that people want. If some Religous Right moron complains then we just say 'why didnt you get a filtering box'. Finally a free and open sociaty where were parents get to decide what comes into their home instead of forcing they lame ass morals and cheezy belif systems on me. Its going to be hard for the FCC to pass large fines when there are devices parents can use that nullfies all their arguments for the fines.
This proves that P2P isnt a problem and all the RIAA is doing is trying to keep it self around. I mean if piracy isnt a problem why do we need the RIAA wouldnt the member companies stop tithing money to them and they would dry up? If p2p file shareing or other forms of so called 'piracy' was a real problem how could the music industry afford to raise prices or pull other marketing tricks to screw consumers? If p2p was a real choice and real competition then the labels would be cutting prices and trying to do everything they could to stop it via market forces. Instead we have the situtation where they are trying to milk extra fees.
We trust everyone, Trust but verify. Why should machines be any differnt. If I ask you to do a math problem do I trust you with the correct answer, sure I do, but I still verify. I preform the calculation my self, and allow others to preform the calculation. If we all come up with the same result we most likly have the correct answer. We must be careful not to allow the problem to define the solution method as that allows for us all to preform the same mistakes. Just like the Seti@home and distributed crack peopel found out that not everyone can be trusted that the only thing todo is have many people test the same key space no one should trust only one answer but rather develop consenous
I thought something better was sftp. As for distributions.. why not HTTP? Setup one reflector that dynamically kicks outs redirects as new mirrors come online. This is mutch better as we have a ton of clients already installed (curl,wget,..etc) We also have load balancing, dns round robin, authorzation, security(read: SSL) well defined in the protocol. All we need is a cgi script to kick out the redirects, and another that will make signature files based on the publically available SSL cert. Whamo all the same features.. and we didnt have to reinvent the wheel.
Anyone else notice the perfect shadows and glares in the image? This has gotta be CG. Real Pictures never have perfect shadows, ambient light and all. Not to mention that the static buttons change orintation of the text depending on if the device is upright or on its side. Im sorry the 'Menu' and 'Disp' button will not change, and I dont belve those are part of the display. This is a poorly excuted joke.
everyone is talking about how XBOX is competing witht the PS2 on price. I suggest that the ps2 isnt hurting them, people want they want, if you want PS2 your going to get a sony, if you want an XBOX your going to get an Xbox, sure grandma might not know the differnece, but how many gandmas feel confident to change the gift from what Jr, asked for? none. They just get what you wrote down. I think the real price pressure for Xbox is the second hand market. The problem is that with only a few good games people start to get tired of the console, sell it and someone else picks it up on the second hand market. I got my xbox ( just to play KTOR) and it was like $149.. course that was second hand. So is it coidence that the new price is exactly the going rate on the second hand market? And if you dont belive me that there are only a few good xbox titles why are they still pushing HALO ? Jebus its a good game, (better on the PC) but are you still supposed to be surfing that wave years later? I mean they should be pushing HALO2.. or even HALO3.. but no.. they just have a few old tired games. The only great thing about Xbox is that its costing MS even more money to sell it now, and it will never go away. MS can affored to pump money into Xbox for eons, something atari and sega could never do. The only thing that could kill Xbox would be the MediaCenter PC, but since MS done an even worse job of selling that piece of trash Xbox2 will most likly suck in the MediaCenter features killing that basterd and pushing XboxX slight further along.
Uh.. Ya.. thats what the Carnival Algorithem needed, Cheaper, Easier, Faster ways to test potential terrorist. I mean hey buying a 6 plane tickets from Boston to Washington DC is just to damn expensive. We need to allow these guys to apply for a job as a janoitor, get rejected...and move on to the next canidate. At least we have a war over seas, and we are trying to pick our fights there. The deptarment of Homeland insecurity coudlnt protect its own cherry on prom night.
I mean Hey.. there nothing I want more after watching 30 seconds about erectial disfunction then to click a button and hear another 5 minutes about it. Often I think it would be great to watch an extra 10 minutes about feminine hygiene products during sports center. I always want more of that driving Ditech beat line.. that thing rocks.. if it was only longer. I think this proves that the people over at tivo are no longer satisifed with watching their own demise, they activly want to take part in crashing and burning. Just the other night when I use using my tivo I wanted more commericals.. not less. They do have a point I got the tivo so I could record commericals.. not tv shows. Jebus these guys are stupid.. its like all the Dentist coming toghter to design a new drill that hurts more.
You know, as I recall McNealy was once part of a group that worked on an OS somthing that started off at bell labs, and had lot of help from some univeristies.. like UC Berkly.. as I remember. I I think that OS started off well but then slowly died under corprate intrest pulled it apart. Then an Open Source clone started floating around..and started pushing on the older OS.. finally kicking its ass. So why should be surpised that Scott is screwing things up again.. its done it before. I suggest that we just code around his little problems as we did before. I suggest we write an Open Source clone.. and we call it LAVA.
Its a newton with a keyboard. gdamn Apple is 10 years ahead of everyone.

Soon your side of the car metaphore will fall apart as congress is working on laws to make the chips open so the mom and pops can service the cars.

Timmy back to your chair and away from the keyboard, everyone know that gimps shouldnt be allowed to play with computers.
Sweet, how cool will it be to scrape a few of these off the road and turn them into my own sensor array. And I dont even have to pay for it. sweet!
