  1. A twist on TrueCrypt on Encryption? What Encryption? · · Score: 2, Interesting

OK, first off you idiots who didn't read the whole editorial and suggested TrueCrypt: try expanding your attention spans beyond the length of a tweet.

Now on to my own contribution. Since TrueCrypt is open source, one could come up with their own custom build that would no longer have the same appearance as the original. By appearance, I mean the GUI could be modified or eliminated (command line only). In addition the executable file could be sufficiently scrambled so that its pedigree could be hidden: it would not look like a TrueCrypt derivative.

One project that's on my to-do list is to make a customized version of TrueCrypt's whole-disk encryption (with bootloader) that makes the computer look like it's broken when you try to boot it. Talk about deniability. You just tell them they broke it. In reality it's prompting you for a password but it just doesn't look like it.

  5. 51 and feeling the pinch on With a Computer Science Degree, an Old Man At 35? · · Score: 1

I just turned 51 and I'm feeling the ageism pinch in my office. My company normally hired seasoned guys like me, but lately they've really emphasized hiring fresh-outs. I'm still employed but sensing that there's a cross-hair trained on my back now.
That's why I'm developing my skills for a second income stream "just in case": day trading. Engineers are ideally suited to this sort of thing because it's analytical in nature.

  6. My 20 year old daughter - media influences on Narcissistic College Graduates In the Workplace? · · Score: 1

My 20 year old daughter just boomeranged from college, mid-sophomore year. I could see this train wreck coming because of what I called her "MTV Spring Break" view of college: she had been provided with a fable of how college is "supposed" to be (i.e. throwing up naked on cheezy motel room beds in Daytona). She got to experience this "authentic" college life but unfortunately couldn't hold up the academic end of things.

The relevance to the original story is how media-fed these young adults have become. All their expectations about life after school are formed by TV and the internet. I'm 50 and so glad I'm not coming of age today. It was hard enough in the 70's and 80's but today there is a lot more baggage to overcome.

Funny. By coincidence I switched both PCs in the house over to Avast about a month ago. I can't say if it's actually better or not detection-wise, but it's waaaaaaaay faster. AVG is a real resource hog; that was my main motivation to switch to Avast. In addition, I rather resented AVG's constant presumption that I'd buy the full version. Avast is what it is without being pushy.

I'm shocked no one suggested trading. I've been teaching myself trading for a few years now. Engineers are analytical by nature and trading is absolutely perfect. We're talking late nineties here. Before the phrase "social networking" was invented there was arcadium.com, a so-called "affinity networking" site for gamers.

  21. Remember retractable cell phone antennas? on Your Computer and Cell Phone Are Lying To You · · Score: 1

I used to work for a certain large cell phone maker so this is straight from the horse's mouth.

Remember those retractable antennas? Well, extending the antenna had no effect on the phone's range whatsoever. In fact, the retractable part was not connected at all. The retractable nature of the antenna was probably functional a long time ago; however, during my tenure they were only retractable due to customer focus group feedback. It made customers feel better to be able to pull the antenna out even though it had no effect.

During this same time period when I was in the biz, the battery and signal strength were in fact functional. It could be they're not now on some phones, based on my antenna analogy.

Your CV/Resume should always be kept up to date no matter what, even if you're currently not looking for another job.

That said, you should learn a separate skill in another field so you're not totally dependent on your "day job." I'm a software engineer in my day job but I'm a "finance nerd" at home. I develop day trading software on the side to sell, and for my own use. The whole field of trading is intellectually stimulating; if you're really good at it you might even be able to ditch the day job one day.

Remember that being an entrepreneur doesn't necessarily "taking the plunge" and quitting the day job and joining a start-up. A creative and focused person can develop a side business for extra income. And who knows? Maybe it'll take off. You're young enough to develop this entrepreneurial habit. Think of the possibilities!
