The original statement that VMWare doens't permit arbitrary MAC addresse is true. You are restricted to the VMWare OUI. This doesn't allow for Multicast MAC assignemnt along with a ton of other legitimate reasons to manually set a MAC outside the OUI.
The "vast majority of people" live on 2 dollars a day and don't have computers. The vast majority of computer users don't purchase software that didn't come on their computer. The vast majority of IT depts don't purchase software without some sort of justification. A good IT person would be able to evaluate their needs and match to the appropriate solution given resources available.
Doesn't mean that VMWare doesn't rock. Just that there are considerations you and other failed to take into account when marking the parent as flamebait.
This defensive advance, like the silly anti missile star wars project, will easily be countered at a fraction of the cost by anyone who would ever have the capacity to launch a torpedo at a US naval vessel with simple counter measures such as higher pressure housing and magnetic trigger. All the while nobody will ever launching a torpedo at US naval vessels but the Navy will sure be testing this cool gizmo a bunch, which is where the ecological damage will will come from.
Sound waves of high explosives under water are at a considerably lower frequency than this counter is likely to be. The eco damage of oil or a small bit of uranium from a successful attack that is never going to happen is far less than the constant drills that subs will be conducting.
Easily circumventable + highly expensive + damaging to fisheries + close to useless + massive deficit spending = more national debt per citizen than the mean income.
The USA is hell bent on spending itself out of existence. I just wish they would just get it over with without messing up the rest of the world.
The obvious misquote is corrected in the Register. The proposed change is to protect GPL software developers from patent suits, which has been covered on/. previously.
It is truly sad that most posters on/. are unable to do a basic search to fact check.
This is really a non issue since it only effects adoption of IPv6 and possibly the national security of foriegn nations that don't prepare for the loss or tampering of root server records. The root zone has fewer records than your average mom-n-pop ISP manages in any number of zones so an arguement that the US has some special expertise is just silly. See for yourself. The only thing that makes the root servers special is that everone agrees to use them. At any moment, even you could choose not to use the root servers anymore, let alone a country or continent. The only real issues are stability of service and the widespread adoption of IPv6.
This is as good a time as any to cancel my subscription. I really wasn't getting my money's worth anyway. Before it was choice between convenience and how much their sight design sucked but wal-mart is just evil.
Does anyone know if the new feature to remap modifiers such as control and caps lock for compatibility with Windows and UNIX keyboard conventions applies to the powerbook capslock key? I've never been able to remap it in the past without the ctrl key being sticky.
Scrapping the shuttle without any plans for a replacement and no way to pay for it if we did, is just another nail in the coffin of medicrity that the US has laid herself down in. In 3 years we will see plans annouced to outsource manned space missions to China and India. It will be sold as a cost savings but what it really will be is an acknowledgment that the US is no longer capable of producting anything but an entire country of middle managers, ad execs and wal-mart clerks.
No multi crew ships but I hear it may be coming in the near future. They have been talking about these giant ships they call capitol ships which are supposed to have tremendous fire power, etc. Go check out the back story to get an idea of what they may have planned and what's in the game now. It's a very entertaining read.
I know it's probably going to put me on some foe lists but I work for Disney. I turned on user-agent logging on one of the web servers that just serves HTTP redrirects for domains like espn.com, abc.com and a few thousand other fqdn's for about 5 hours today. These are definetly "Joe User" sites. Here are some results:
2410319 user-agents 2165942 MSIE 101938 Gecko 24370 KHTML 4521 Opera
2213704 running Windows 58796 report running Mac 4099 report running Linux
Some items that may be of interest: I only found about 3660 obviously modified user-agent strings masquerading as MSIE and almost all of them were Opera. That crushes the "everyone is changing their user-agent string" theory. About 8% of windows users aren't using IE. At the same time about half of Mac users ARE using IE, even on OSX. As long as we have people that think it's funny to use a string like this:
"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; $newos =~ s/Microsoft/Linux/g)"
it will be pretty difficult to get truly accurate number out of the major traffic trackers like Hitbox. Hitbox doesn't even distiguish between Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox. BTW, There were a huge number of hits that either didn't report a UA string, were bots or were just freaky like "MOT-A-88/01.05 UP.Browser/4.1.26m.737 UP.Link/4.2.3.5h".
Have you ever tried to maintain install systems like this for multiple hardware models with differing chipsets, adapters and nics? The amount of labor overhead is quickly turned into a purchase of Enterprise Ghost (which has its own drawbacks). The MS stock automated install systems still leaves you with multiple reboots and numerous points that require some user interaction that spans about 2 hours. And that's before you start the mssql install.
RedHat kickstart installs are a much more elegant and flexable automated install solution. Every system you install is left with a basic "answer" file in/root/anaconda-ks.cfg that you could use to easily reproduce the same installation with. You can customize this to create a COMPLETELY patched and configured system for any server task all installed over the network (with your choice of file transfer protocols) in under 15 minutes. The same ks.cfg will work on any hardware supported by the distro. You can use the standard disks and pass a URL to the location of the ks.cfg or do an entirely network based install with PXE if the hardware supports it. If the install has issues you can use the alternate consoles (alt+f2, etc.) to see where it failed and what error messages were generated and even use kickstart debug options, custom scripting (a la print statement) and even look into the source of the installer software, anaconda, which is written in python. The python installation program will even give a traceback to the specific function that threw the exception.
In fact lets go a step further. You can easily bypass the entire install crap with linux and roll your own network booting distro that allows you to add new hardware to your environment, power it on and have it automatically be put into service with a running os and application(s) via network booting and some ingenuity. Appliance app servers. No more of this stupid general purpose OS all day install/configure/update crap.
Lets face it, Win2k server sucks in the flexability department, and not just in installations. If what you have is just a few servers doing run-of-the-mill stuff or you have all the money in the world then I guess it really doesn't matter.
Try kickstart out and you'll see why windows unattended installs suck ass.
Required improvements before I even consider MS a viable competitor on the server:
Actually useful shell and supporting commands standard with OS
Some MS flunkies will try to argue this but that's only because they've never used a real shell. By double tab I have over 3K programs I could run from the prompt.
Scriptable secure remote administration
MS telnet doesn't cut it, not scriptable. Rsh service doesn't work and is insecure. WTS isn't scriptable. I have yet to meet an MCSE that knew any VB let alone knew what WMI was for.
Ability to actually configure/manage system and services from scripting and command line
I hear that you can actuall change all config params in IIS6 through the metabase. I'll believe it when I see it. Ever tried to make changes to the metabase on 100 servers? Ever tried to make changes to httpd.conf on 100 servers?
I believe it should be required that you know HTTP to browse the web just like you should know how to change your own oil to be allowed to drive a car. You should also know how IP and DNS work. Unfortunately, the majority of people barely know how to read.
The abuse of patent protections used not to inovate but to be supress them is necessary to point out the absurdity of our current patent laws. If judgements in suits like these were based on the actual value that had been created by the patent holder instead of the value created by the patent infringer, the protections provided by patents would make a lot more sense. This would prevent people creating patents as a direct revenue source instead of creating patents to protect actual products they're producing. A patent by itself would only be capable of preventing someone from infringing it but not as tool for extortion.
It may not be practical for us here in Seattle to use solar but Washington state make most of it's electicity via hydro. Washington has more hydro-electric than any other state, consisting of 87% of our energy production, amounting to over 88 billion kwh a year. Traditional thermal is only 7% of state production and 6% Nuclear. Eastern Washington even has an up and coming wind power industry too. So eat dust you sun loving pansy.
I started by working in an internet cafe (Speakeasy RIP), and doing simple tech support. It was the beginning of the internet boom. Almost all the people I know either started in tech support or went to school. Certifications are crap if you don't already know how to do it.
Don't do it. Go to college. The days of skilled admins are numbered. The idea of a general purpose OS that needs lots of special knowledge to configure for a specific job is nearing it's end as the dominant paradigm. Admins are expensive and it's hard to find ones that are competent and not lazy:).
Thanks to the Apgars for the opportunity they provided. I wouln't be where I am today without the Speakeasy.

How about Macromedia Flash player. Runs on linux under mozilla or firefox fine.

Ice 9 did the exact opposite; making water solid at room temprature but when heated beyond 45C or so, it reverted to normal liquid water form.
