  1. Re:Getting mp3s will be that much easier on DCC2 Protocol for IRC file transfers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Wow, that post was so uninformed and assuming it actually made me choke.

    1. The MPAA, RIAA and whoever else already have people/drones/bots/whatever on many IRC networks. We see them almost every day.

    2. 9/10ths of the channels on ANY network, including efnet, quakenet, or whatever are most definitely not warez channels. There are certainly plenty of warez channels out there, but if you think the recent warez group busts weren't at least in part due to irc monitoring, whether it be with clients, carnivore, or both and more, you' are either fooling yourself or just plain stupid.

    3. IRC network profits? What are you talking about? Most IRC servers are run by volunteers who want to give something back. I say "most" because I don't know of any IRC servers that are run for a physical profit of some sort. Do you?

Moral costs, feh. Whoever modded you Insightful needs to be blindsided with the cluebat.

That would be the supposed beauty of it. The bringer of the traffic would host the mirror. Slashdot would mirror site-x with site-x's consent thanks to the installation of the "slashdot" module.

Lots of holes in that idea, though. If you automated the process, you could fake a large amount of unique traffic and trigger a backup to a site, which could then just turn around and throw ads on it and say it's the original poster of said content. Etc etc etc.

So, yeah, automation bad, but maybe a module that JUST notices heavy amounts of bandwidth consumption from one referer could automatically put up a "not accept traffic from referer x" or "site is busy come back later" or something page instead of showing content. That'd be nice and supposedly simple.

  5. Re:An idea on Latest Chernobyl Motorcycle Photos · · Score: 1

A "slashdot" apache module would be far more interesting and useful, methinks.

If installed, if a (configurable) large number of hits comes from one source in a short period of time, offload a site mirror (or something) to another site and redirect the users, or shut down, or do something.

Hell, set something up on slashdot itself to check for the "slashdot" module, and if it exists, slashdot can mirror the site. You could make this work for any location, though the security problems are obvious.. not to mention the number of people that would actually install the module would be slim, because after all, who knows they're going to get randomly slashdotted?

Whatever, though. Some kind of apache module to detect a slashdot effect and then do something in response would be pretty fucking useful.

More fun, I have a Powerbook G4 with an 800 MHz processor, only about a year and a half old, but I think the hard drive is a 4200RPM. I get this error when I play a creation with four or five tracks for more than a few seconds.

I actually got Windows 98 installed and running on my Powerbook running OS X 10.3.

It took several hours for it just to install, so long that I went to bed while waiting for it to finish.. and when I woke up, the install stopped somewhere and needed me to click continue or something. Took several more hours after that to install, for a total of something like eight hours, if not more.

Once installed it ran EXTREMELY slow, and considering the OS X port of Bochs can't get online.. well, besides the fun of installing it, it's useless.

The following few sentences on the NFL Gameday 2004 page are making my brain hurt:

At the end of the second half, the score is 7 - 6. The Panthers are not content to go into the locker room with the score so close. With less than 3 minutes left, they pull out some play calling that is so pass-friendly you'd think the Colts were on the field.

The end of the second half is the end of the game, and if it really means the end of the second quarter/first half, then why is there all of a sudden three minutes left and both teams score again to make it 14-9? For once I'm sure this isn't a product of my being half asleep, this actually MAKES NO SENSE. ARGH! For the love of god, 1up needs an editor.

I was going to mention Tengen in my post, but figured it would just confuse people.. heh.

Tengen was a licensed publisher at one point. All their games were sold in the same stores as all the other licensed publishers, the carts were the same as otherlicensed nes carts, etc.

Then, the Tetris thing happened, and Tengen was no longer a licensed publisher.

Nintendo no longer manufactured their carts (hence the black cartridges), and their games were no longer available in the same stores as licensed nes games. A funny thing happened as a consequence, though.. some games they released while they were licensed were released again when they lost it, and while the games were EXACTLY the same, the cartridges were physically different and the boxes no longer had the "seal of quality".

Maniac Mansion as never "close to not getting the seal." If Jaleco refused to remove the nudity, crass humor and the hamster in the microwave the game simply would have not been released.

Licensed NES publishers did not release ANY games without the seal of quality, which, as has been stated elsewhere, was really just a symbol for "this company is paying us for this bs seal and better distribution than unlicensed companies." Nintendo ruled with an iron fist back in those days, and unlicsensed companies couldn't get into stores because of it.
