The issue with Microsoft I think is that they have the policy, "if you don't want to join us we will screw you".
I really prefer a "...go ahead and shoot yourself on the foot" policy;)
I used Cryo-cell, since they provide this service in Ecuador. As a company it seems very serious and active, but I had never used the stored cells. I really don't know how well the company will respond once you need it.
Android is succeeding in Phones an tablets.
But I don't see a strong effort to succeed on the desktop (with mouse and keyboard). Sure, it runs on x86, but it does not seems that someone is thinking on Android on the PC focused on the mouse and keyboard as input devices.
But I think that Windows 8 is screwing things up, so it may be a better chance to put more Linux on the desktop when Windows 8 came out;)
I always complain that the software market should be more regulated to stop some abuses. Not only in favor of open source, but instead in favor of the consumers.
I think that if should be a law that says:
1) All source code of commercial software should be published under any license that the author want, to allow security inspection of the source code and avoid backdoors.
2) Every software that is no longer supported by its manufacturer (reached End of Life) will be released as open source or public domain with its source code.
Sure, there most be a detailed rules about each one and put more examples on different scenario (games, console software, mainframe software) to understand its impact.
A good way to make some money (not to get rich) is being an online tutor for virtual classroom.
My local College had set up a Moodle server and created a few contents for "MS Office / Google Docs" course rooms and "Information Technology", that virtual courses are for the University student mass, and requires several tutors. The tutor opens each week a new material, grades homeworks, and help the students on the forum when they are stuck in a problem with the course. I only see the students face to face at the end of the course for the final exam.
I don't know if were you live there is this alternative. It is better if it is a local College when you can have at lease 95% virtual and 5% onsite so you can different yourself for overseas contenders.
But I don't know if you like teaching;)
Regards
We need a law that makes this two things
1) Every commercial software must have the source code available for inspection/viewing under whatever license the author wants.
2) The discontinued software must be released under public domain or under an open source software....so we can have a Office 97 and Windows 98 open source spin off;P
This seems to be the problem. An enterprise business focused company seems to suck in the consumer market. A Consumer market company have hard times to get into enterprise environments. So, can a balance be created?...do you want to help companies make money? or do you want to take the money from teenagers and college students while they said WOW when seeing you product? can you do both?
About "...turn Skype into a Microsoft-exclusive platform." I doubt about it, but with MS you never known.
If you checked MS openess strategy, MS on software on premise has the same single-OS strategy. But on Cloud services, MS is allowing a lot of open source software to have more customer base potential running on their cloud....even that the message remains the same (Open Source software is good for MS if it runs on MS platform), for cloud services like Skype, I think they will prefer to have the variety of platforms only if they are attached to the MS "sucking money cloud".
You can come from this conclusion by watching this MS presentation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu-FrK2E1Nc
Came on, a 2.4billion dollar contract must be something almost unmanageable. Sure the salesman must be very happy by signing a contract like this, but he does not do the delivery. I'm sure that if any company signs a 2.4billion contract does not have the required resources at hand to execute it.... because you are not expecting to sign a 2.4b contract every year.... so you had to go out and hire... so, does the people that you are hiring has the expected skill that was calculated on the 2.4b dollar business case in the contract??.. uhm...
I think that there had been some abuses on the software industry since govement lacked to regulate this at its time.
It is time to pass a law that:
1) All software source code of commercial product should be available for public observation under the license the author choose.
2) All software that reached EOF must be open source under a license that allow legally derivate work.
I was hoping this will end detonating all the patents nuclear weapons by going to court. This only delays the atomic patent war.
My hopes goes now with "Microsoft vs Barnes & Noble"
...and now Superman will not use its underwear from the outside....marvel's Fantastic Four and Spiderman will be the new enemies of the justice league....Wonder Woman invisible jet will be replaced by a gigantic flying snail since DC don't want more jokes about it.
I don't think that Bill Gates should be seen as the Microsoft messiah. If it i something wrong with MS is the business model.
1) The operating system had come a software commodity with time. Now people uses a varaity of OS and didn't feel excluded like it was happening on the 80's and 90's. So MS has to understand that with the OS is no longer going to make a lot of money like before.
2) The office suite is also becoming a commodity. Office will slow down and eventually will stop being the cash cow.
Software licensing for the consumer is not what is used to be on the 80's and 90's. They have to deal with that first.
So, Bill Gates is going to show up and change that? no, a change of business model is going to help MS, not the messiah.
...came on... make it open source. !!!

When Google starts using "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu to train its sale force, we will know it had reached the Microsoft level.
Do you need something tough and don't care about the price? Get an IBM POS (ok, now Toshiba) or the IBM Kiosk. URL seems to be broken now. http://www-03.ibm.com/products/retail/kiosk/industries/retail.html
In fact if everybody stood naked on the line, the security check will be faster.
Here goes to the IBM i Lovers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StuQy13q128

came on.. The cloud is costing more jobs than open source.
"...become profitable again..." is that's what we call innovation?
...you never know.... you are warned.
This may help to sell my MC Hammer LP on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160668765594 I will get rich !!!!.. uhm... not.

..thanks NASA.. my ISP appreciate the excuse to give crappy internet service.

So, if Mozilla launch Firefox 6 has as 3.7 magically all business software will support it? Came on, get real !! I think this is FUD against Firefox.
