  3. What's so wrong with allofmp3? on AllofMP3.com May Hinder Russia Joining WTO · · Score: 0

Ya know what? Everyone loves to bash allofmp3.com bc it's Russian and shady. Well... so what. You want shady? The US firms are a legal mafia outfit. Think about it. They control all avenues worth controlling (radio, advertising, production, etc.) and if you start to encroach on them they make you an offer you can't refuse. Either they buy you out, sue you into oblivion, or both (think mp3.com).

Aside from that I read on their site that some money actually does go to the artist. Not much, and I have no way of verifying that, but take a wild guess how much of that is *my* problem. There are middlemen taking a cut here and in Russia, the difference is here they take a bigger cut and the listener gets screwed worse, whereas the Russians take a smaller cut and the artist gets screwed worse. Take another wild guess why ppl love the Russian site so much.

So yeah, if I ever meet the guys from Social Distortion (which is very possible since I cruise bars in LA a lot) I'll buy them a beer or 5. But don't you dare expect me to cry for them Argentina. I sitting here with a crappy new haircut in "business casual" looking at an hour+ commute home to an apartment. Let them bear the brunt of the industry's greed.

  5. can't install linux on a VIDEO CAMERA on Fedora Core 1 Released · · Score: 5, Funny

this is a funny story. I have a new asus motherboard with firewire built in. I was running windows (just to test the hardware, mind you..) and then finally got around to trying to install linux on a separate hard disk.

linux (redhat 6.x and latest gentoo) and even freebsd refused to install! huh? never saw THAT happen before.

well, turns out that I had my firewire camera (not a real camera but a canopus firwire media bridge that looks like a FW camera) connected and all I can think of is that the funny asus bios considered THAT a 'disk' and when linux and bsd scanned the 'installable devices' via a probe, it found the camera device but wasn't smart enough to know it wasn't a disk/storage device. so the install hung hard.

removing the firewire cable allowed the installs to continue (all of them).

the very thought of linux or bsd trying to install itself on a VIDEO CAMERA just makes me laugh. imagine the design issues of that - when the system boots up, does it display titles on the video camera eyepiece? if it fscks, does it have to rewind the tape often? does it have the 1024 cylinder limit if you boot from mini-DV? ;)

just kinda funny, I guess. the new motherboard bios' are trying to abstract the media type and say 'disks are disks, no matter if ide or scsi or firewire'. ha!

  6. Poor Interface Design Gets Worse on Apple Releases Updated iCal 1.5.1 · · Score: 5, Informative

Like many other people, I've had problems with iCal's interface from the start. I had hoped for some usability improvements with this upgrade but it seems to have actually gotten worse! Instead of the popup window to show details/information for an event, there is now a drawer that slides out from the side of the main window. The problem with this is that the tray is HUGE. If you keep your iCal window zoomed (like I assume most people do), you don't even realize at first that the drawer has slid out because it is completely off the screen. The solution to this is to make the main iCal window narrower, compressing the already-small calendar view even further. I have no idea why they chose to design the program this way, but I guess I'll keep hoping for the right changes in the NEXT version.

  8. Significance of Neo's Revisions on Matrix Revolutions Trailer Released · · Score: 0

I have figured out the significance of neo being the 6th one. lemme know what you thik of this. In genesis, man is created on the sixth day of creation, therefore the number 6 would represent man, and the fact that neo is the sixth one and his old name was thomas anderson, thomas relating to the doubting thomas because neo does doubt at first and then anderson which means son of adam 'son of man' I'm surpirsed they didn't make his name adam. but neo is DEFINITELY cooler.anyways, also the number 666 is the antichrist. think about this...the number 3 is associated with the real christ, and if the holy trinity consists of the father, son and holy spirit, so christs number could be 333, in the same way that the opposite of christ would be 666. we are the'gods' of the machines. in the animatrix we 'created them in our own likeness. Wanting to be like God is what made us all fall in the beginning, so neo being the 6th one gives an indication that man will be victorious over machine...and unwittingly I ahve also explained who the antichrist actually is...US! thats a very wachowskian twist...any takers anybody?

  19. Moz for Windows on Mozilla Development Roadmap Updated · · Score: 0, Informative

I really tried to give Mozilla a chance on my WinXP system, but it's simply a hog. Using the Quick Launch feature (the only way it was usable.. I don't want to wait 10-15 seconds for my browser to launch when I open a link) it would consistently eat up 30MB of RAM and having the browser running just made my computer feel slow. This is in addition to the numerous UI bugs, I don't know if they are specific to the Windows version, but even things like rearranging favorites on the fly with drag and drop wouldn't work, and sometimes text boxes like the address bar would refuse to take entry and I'd have to kill and restart the browser.

I was bearing with it for a while, I had really gotten to like tabbed browsing, but then I searched around a bit and found a couple of solutions that would give me tabs in IE, pretty much the best of both worlds. I'm using NetCaptor at the moment.. only downside is that it's shareware, and $30 for tabs kind of sucks. I'll probably go back to Moz in a few versions and give it another try if they can work out some of the bloat/bug problems that it's having at the moment.
