This is my first "mod parent up" post (So far as I can remember). The above post really is core to the argument: It shows that GPLv3 does not restirct the most important users of such software. Come on mod's MOD IT UP!
My guess is that it is the spamming companies that get in trouble, not the compinies they are hired to spam for. Therefore, all you have to do is view the full header and see where the message came from. It would only be possible to forge one or two headers, and the rest would lead right back to the system the mail was sent from. Email is traceable.
If you find a company with an unsecure email server however...
When you do ask, make sure to ask for everything you could possibly want (so long as you can justify the request). Then, prioritize with the stuff you need in the top of the list. Whatever you submit, expect to get half of, so request double. However, occasionaly you MAY get a windfall and actualy get a complete approval, and if so you MAY get an audit to see if the stuff is actualy used.
If you are given a budget, spend all of it, if you spend less, your next year's budget will be based off what you actualy used, not what you were alloted. If you manage to do things more inexpensivly that you had thought, upgrade your plan to use it all. You don't get to keep money left over at the end of the year, and any surplus will be deducted from your budget for the next year.
For example, you have a $5,000 budget based on the cost of a server you need to perchase. Between the time you sent in the request (for $10,000 for redundant servers) and the time it came throug, the cost of the server fell to $4,300. If you buy only that server, saving $700 from your estimate, the next time you send in a request for a $5,000 peice of equiptment, you will only get $4,300. If you upgrade a few options and spend $5,000 you will get the full amount next time you make a request.
I agree, I watched one Seichi fansup Gunslinger Girls (now liscensed) and it was the best done subbing job I've ever seen. Not just fansubbing, subbing. No "official" release of any Anime (and I've seen plenty) came close to the attention to detail and profossionalism that you showed in that. I will be buying Gunslinger Girls once the DVD comes out to support the creators, but I'm willing to bet it will inferior to what I already have. If I had the choice, I would download a fansub of the quality that Seichi showed in Gunslinger Girls even if it took several weeks longer than someone of inferior quality.
PS Is there any way of getting Fansubed Stuff from honest groups after liscensing, if I can prove I have purchased the liscensed version?
Jack has to leave the original copyright notice on the code, or he violates the GPL by distributing the modifications.
I'm not saying I don't beleive you, I do in fact beleive you, but I can't find that in the GPL, which part (section/subsection) explicitly states that the copyright notice must be maintained for dirivitive work? Or is this general law and the fact that that the GPL doesn't say otherwise suffice?
If SCO can sue IBM because they *thought* they could convince people that source code was copied from SCO, how much more do you thinks the courts will go for the fact that the exact same code is demonstratably open and owned by Joe Hacker, even if it doesn't say so?
For instance, what prevents Company X from just skipping the Jack N Box completely and pretending to find the code laying out in the public domain somewhere with no copyright notice or GPL license? Obviously, the (exact) similarity between the original source and Company X's will prove otherwise, which probably happens quite a lot in normal copyright cases. The judges will laugh them off the face of the earth.
Um right, um, yeah, that half of my point was pretty preposterous.
Joe Hacker writes code for program.cc and releases it under the GPL. Jack N Box downloads the code, modifies it to modification.cc and posts it as GPL material. Jack N Box leaves town, dies, or otherwise steps off the face of the earth. Company X downloads modification.cc code uses it to make a propritary product and claims all ownership of the work, ignoring the terms of the GPL.
Can Joe Hacker sue Company X for misuse of his source code (90% of the code is still his) even though the name listed (quite legaly so far as I know) on modification.cc is Jack N Box? As the GPL stands, I don't think he can, which can be a problem, especialy if Jack N Box is a ficticious person who works for Company X.
Ladies and gentlemen I think we have an exploit in the GPL, I think we need a patch.
Yeah, he sold it to those companies who brought a good educational system and allowed individuals to have it in their home, even if they wern't college students at the time! He took a system that only a few people could use for writing research paper and made it some kind of global communications medium, like we really needed a way to communicate with people in other countries.
Ok, the add in my area said that there was a new system in place with "no more late fees" and that people are keeping movies "as long as they want" From this I agree, I would be an idiot to think that that there would be no more late fees and that I could keep the movie as long as I want. What?
No, although I don't rent movies often (almos never) and have not even tried to rent from Blockbuster since this campaign went in place I truly thought that they probably just upped their general rental price and had a maximum number of total rentals a person could have out at one time. If somebody wanted to buy one movie at a trick dicount by abusing the system, they could only do so once, and would have to return the title to get another. Sounded like a pretty good buisness plan to me, not to far off from what Netflix is doing.
I apoligize, I intended to minimize this with my statement:
I write this post not only for the poster of the parent, but also perhaps even mainly for, those who echoed his sentiment without even the faint hint of humor he seems to have injected.
I cannot, based on anything written here, tell what kind of a person you are. I even considered quite a while not making my post. I finaly decided that even if you were not the kind of person that I was lamblasting, someone who read the thread probably was. Thus I went ahead and made the post, but I added the above quoted disclaimer.
I cannot, in truth, say I am sorry that I posted my post. I can, however, say that had I known the content of your reply beforehand, I would have attached the post elsewhere in the thread. I may well, again, have posted it in a place that made to many assumptions about the poster, I don't know. I hope you can agree that my points needed to be made, and I hope you don't overly mind that I used your post as a stepping stone to make my point.
By "color changing fonts" he meant fonts that if the part they were on top of gets light, the font gets dark, and vice versa so you can always read the font. This is a wonderful feature and makes reading easier. The designer fonts are a different thing and make reading harder, they are rarly used by the "good" anime groups without cause. (Cause being something like translating an extremly obscure Kanji, intentionaly showing that it would be hard for a Japanese person to read and looks antiquated or otherwise odd.)
Ok, you lump them together. You blatently violated copyrights on music you could have purchased. You blatently violated copyright on AMERICAN movies. You started the ball rolling. Without people like you, who don't care if the origional producers are EVER recompensated for your downloads, I'm comfident the anime companies would have been happy to let us get our anime the only way we could, since we would almost certentaly buy it once it came out in our country.
Your lack of forsight and ethics (yes the RIAA and MPAA also lack ethics, that doesn't change a thing) have brought this down on those who had a well known moral code to respect the copyrights when possible. You have turned this from grey market to black market. You fired the first shot. You, because you didn't want to pay for something legaly when you could get it free illegaly, ruined a beutiful thing. Yes, some things are, indeed sacred. Or should be. Things like ethics, law, and responcibility. These are things those like you care nothing for. It was never your music. They were never your movies. It was never your Anime. But you didn't care. Now the best source of Anime is threatened. Online communities are threatened. A wonderful multicultural learning tool is threatened. Because you didn't want to pay for what you took.
I write this post not only for the poster of the parent, but also perhaps even mainly for, those who echoed his sentiment without even the faint hint of humor he seems to have injected. I write this for those who truly somehow think they are entitled to the fruits of other people's work. You can try to justify it, you can point to pages of atrocities comitted by "the other side" but two wrongs have never made a right. If you think you are going to change laws with your "civil disobedience" think again. You have changed laws. You brought us the DMCA. You will continue giving your opponents a target and continue making any true copyright reform a marginal issue, because it can easily be pointed out that you just want stuff for free. You make me sick.
Yes, it is flagrant, organized large(ish) scale copyright infringement. However, the fansubers are almost completly supportive of the copyright holders. Every fansubber I know, including, sorta, myself (I have never been an official member of any groups, but have sent in corrections to a few) will buy the DVD once they are available. Furthermore, in the case of movies, we tend to see them in the theatre SEVERAL times when they actualy make it to US theatres, sometimes driving for over an hour to get to the nearest theatre that is playing it.
We have, until now, always beleived that the companies knew this and were SUPPORTIVE of our efforts at getting the american populace intrested in Anime. Often major distributors use the popularity of a fansub to figure out what to take the trouble to make official translations. We are the market and the advertisers. We did more even than Pokemon to get Americans intrested in Anime. We want good translation to be available on the shelves at blockbuster and many of us regularly send email to such chains making such requests. We always thought we were not just tolerated, but even appriciated. (The "leaks" of some scripts furthered this beleif.) We tried our best not to interfere with the ligitimate distribution channels.
If you see a fansub Anime, it WILL include screens, possibly at the beginning and end, possibly cutting the Anime like commercials on broadcast telivision, imploring all users of the file NOT to distribute after liscensing, often this is followed up with a request for the viewer to BUY the DVD once it is out. Most of us do. I will continue to buy liscensed Anime, and I will continue to download fansubs, but only from companies that HAVN'T sent their cease and disist letters. I won't fansub your stuff if you don't want me to, but I also won't buy it.
The announcement BTW to many of us felt like being hit in the groin with a 2x4. We were shocked and truly hurt. Perhaps we were delusional about the companies views of us, but we felt betrayed. I hope that this isn't the beginning of the end but hope is a thin, and insubstantual thing. I'm not sure it is enough to hold up the community. I am glad you are here with me Sam, here at the end of all things
So would men be, probably, if they were subject to be eaten by a parasite from the inside out. Pregnancy and childbirth can destroy a woman's life {sometimes literally}.
Um, that was sarcasm, there are a sizable number of pro-life women. True there are also a great number of pro-choice women, and the maintaining of legal abortions is a femminist platform, but to say every woman would be pro choice to stereotype as assudadably as saying that every man would be against pornography control laws. I wasn't making a value judgement on abortion, but I will now.
I am offended by your insinuation that if I had been born with different chromosomes that I would have a different moral stance than I do now. I am offended by your insinuation that I think only as benifits me. I have my moral standards on many topics and it is often an inconvenience to myself.
I have been a vegitarian for over ten years, and I do NOT force people whom I'm visiting to make allowances for this, if all that is being cooked is meat, I just don't eat. I do not beleive in premarital sex and am thus a virgin at the age of 23, and NOT for lack of oppertunity either. I have a record of considering others before myself, indeed it might be one of my biggest problems (I'm easily taken advantage of). Your insinuation that the only reason I'm pro-life is because it can't inconvenience me is wrong, offensive and frankly ridiculous. Oh, to forstall the usual argument I get next, no I was NOT brought up like this, these morals I came to on my own. I am not a member of a church that holds similar positions. I don't get my values from a party platform. (In spite of this rant I am mostly liberal.) I am strongly in favour of other forms of birth control (condoms, the pill, (even the day-after pill) spermicides, and sterilization surgeries. In spite of the strength of my convictions I am not inflexible. I support stem-cell research (come on guys, there's a difference between a few days old embryo barly beyond zygote stage and a second trimester fetus with arms, legs, and brain activity.)
I also would support a woman pope, in general, as I would a woman president, in general. (I wouldn't support C. Rice for either position, though.)
And political scrambling over whether a woman can serve as an intermediate between you and your imaganiary friend in the sky is SO more important than saving millions of children's lives.
The drug companies together make more than gates does, they don't want to start a trend of free drugs and are probably unbribable.
Gates may be an asshat in the computer industry, but his genorosity to charity is well beyond what I see from anyone else on the planet. He could be spending that 750M on really expensive hookers or buying more lobbyists, but he isn't. He has saved more people than you will probably SEE in yourlifetime (not counting on TV).
Want to point it out when MS engages in illegal and immoral practices, go ahead.
Want to talk about what a dick Bill Gates is to others in the industry, go ahead.
Want to talk about the fact that MS makes a crappy OS, go ahead.
But unless you have donated anything close to him, in either total dollars or precent of total income, shut the fuck up about his charitable donations unless you want to praise him. (Or at least mention that his saving millions of lives at least partialy mitigates the fact that he is overcharging for a computer operating system and driving competitors out of buisness.
Yes, this is a flame. A flame, in this case is warrented.
Hrmm couldn't this be used somewhat similar to a turing machine, except with audio cues instead of shapes? If you can voice controll playlist orders, and you have mp3's with commands such as "add moveup3.mp3 to bottom of list remove moveup.mp3"(assuming this command will remove first instance of moveup.mp3) moveup.mp3 of course is a audio sequence that moves the last song up one position in the playlist. With a complex sequence of such commands, couldn't you implement a turing-like rules system in audio?
Looking at the pictures of this box, I can't really imagine it clashing with ANY colour scheme. It is semi-reflective (like most mac stuff these days) so should pick up ambiant colours and its base is white, which is almost as good as black for going well with ANYTHING. If you really want to, you could take pictures of your daughter's room and send them in to some interior design company, along with a downloaded image of the mac mini, and get an official consultation (for a price) but I'm pretty sure that whatever colour scheem she has, the mac mini won't clash.
Oh, and if, somehow, it does, it is very easily concealable.
Um dude, although I agree with the importance of the importance of your document, I can kinda see their point. You really should find a refrence elsewhere to the document you have, in a newspaper or such, that is hosted by somebody other than geocities. I could type up a confession by Bill Gates that he is a pedophile and buys boyslaves off of Michael Jackson, digitaly affix a signature, post it on gocities and cite it. But Wikipedia SHOULD remove my link in that case. Why is your case different? Well, possibly because your document is real, but how can I tell?
On the other hand, they did treat you like shait on the discussion board page dismissing you instead of telling you what you needed to find to authintisicate your claims. They made ad-hominium attacks against you and were basicly jerks. So see if you can find a link to a newssource that mentions the origional document, if so, link to that newssource and they won't have a leg to stand on.
And it is there in the form of Erwin Schrödinger's equally famous cat, which is simultaneously dead and alive because its fate depends on the quantum properties of an object whose state is indeterminate.
Schrödinger's cat was supposed to show the flaw in the idea of something being simutaneoulsy two things at once, only defined at observation, why, oh why does everyone use it as a justification (or even explination) of that idea?
The Uninted States of America was never intended to be a country, true. Its constitution is for a group of soverign states, true. But what was supposed to be, and what is on paper, does not define what is. The USA is a country. It has a common culture (true there are regional differences, but there are also regional differences between Tokyo and Osaka about as great.) a predominant language and a common group of laws and economic system. Its armed forces are under centralized control and laws made at the federal level trump laws made at any other level.
The USA is an empire. About half of its territory was taken by force during the "civil war" after said territories tried to back out of the union of supposadably soverign states. The fact that they were retaken by force shows that states are no longer soverign. To be more honest the US should rename the term "State" to province or perferstructure or something, but it enjoys pretending that it exsits now, how it was always supposed to, and makeing such a drastic change in terminology would force the admission that this was not the founding fathers' intention.

Counterintuitive to say the least.
