Wouldn't a proximity sensor be a much better solution? I think they're cheaper, and they can yell at you if something/someone is in the way, much harder to ignore than a blob on the screen.
Another option here would be to use a "Spot" devise that emails your GPS cords to someone, the new ones can send a short message along too. They are in the hundred dollar range and subscription is about that much yearly.
I don't about SMS and what system you're on, but I send emails via the Globalstar and Orbcomm systems and they cost around $0.10 a pop or about $30 a month for unlimited.
There were some people where I work toying around with the idea of putting those pen-cams on sharks to find out what they are doing out at the 'white shark cafe'.
Toys and science, the best of bedfellows.
California's central valley used to be chock full of mosquitoes until we killed them all with DDT. The DDT appears to have done much more damage than the loss of the bugs.
Ah yes, the ubiquitous Argo floats, the wiki page has a great map map showing them covering the world's oceans. I'm amazed boats aren't running into these all the time (or maybe they are?)
I've been working on a CO2/pH monitoring system as a payload for these guys. Really cool stuff, I didn't RTFA but I heard this trip is a world record for longest autonomous ocean going voyage.
Thanks, my camp was actually on that picture.
While wandering around last week I saw a 40ft Waldo/Wally, for fun see if you can find him in that image.

Most cephalopods see the polarization of light as well, but they are colorblind so that's not much fun.
