I can see myself paying for a subscription. I would not pay per video, even as a miropayment. I'm not spending my money on being rickrolled.
What I would pay for however, are shows that are currently on cable. If I had the choice to only download the shows I wanted, ad free, for 20 bucks a month, I would jump at it. To be able to catch up on entire seasons without downloading the torrent and risking all the nasty stuff that comes with it would be awesome.
On the data mining side, Google could find out who is watching what. This would give them an enormous amount of data for their AdSense program. I wouldn't care. I get my tv whenever and where ever I want.
Does it not strike anyone as ironic that we should be more afraid of the anti terror legislation advocates than the terrorists? Reminds me of a saying, something along the lines of If you set out to destroy all evil...
space is huge. You'd have to spend an awful lot of effort to collect even a gram of the stuff.
I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that solar winds brought this stuff mostly for free. I suppose the scoop needed to collect it would be huge though. Still, the amount that can be taken into orbit can be significant. I mean if we can get something like Hubble up there, a tank of H2 shouldnt be that hard.
I dont see why we cant send up hydrogen. Light, will have more of an impact than radiation and is cheap, and hard to screw up, since if it explodes, no radiation, and is the most abundant element in space anyway. Scratch that, why send it up when we can get it from space in the first place?
I agree with parent. Its critical that Linux, Ubuntu especially, present updates in an easy to understand manner. It is, after all, Linux for human beings. I think its also a good point that what you seen in Synaptic isnt the latest release of the software. This can cause confusion when a user sees that version x.xx is out, but the version in synaptic is a couple releases behind. I came across this with Eclipse. The version in the repository is hopelessly out of date. When i tried to install software with the Software updates function in eclipse, it wouldnt work. I was left scratching my head going WTF? After all, how hard is it to make a.deb file? Ubuntu 8.10 even recognizes when you download one and helps you install it. I think this is the improvement i liked the most when upgrading. Just my $0.02
Oh you old guys with your outdated ideas. When I have a kid, I don't want it to come out with extras or deficiencies. I will do everything in my power to make sure that whatever percentage of my genetic material I pass on has the best chance to succeed. Whether it's "right" or "wrong" doesn't matter to me. All that matters in the end result.
We would also do well to remember that half of one's upbringing is dependent on the environment. Even a brilliant child needs a stimulating environment to help it along. As with all technology, its not that it exists that matters, its what we do with it.
I agree. I actually prefer targeted ads. The less makeup commercials I have to watch, the better. I dont even care about the purchasing history, as long as when im with my friends, an add doesnt shout "needs2bfree, Reduced price on Viagra, next isle"
It seems to more and more be the case that if something fails, that its fashionable to blame "the code". I wonder if its a sign of the times that programmers are the fall guys for major fuck ups. As more and more of these stories hit the media, how will it affect the jobs I'm offered and the way I'm treated. Will what I do become the lawyer of the job market? Universally dispised, but still neccesary? In the book im reading, I found a quote if found funny and disturbing at the same time. To put it in context, it's in an accounting book talking about internal controls. "Computer programmers should not operate a company's computers, because they can program the computer to write cheques to themselves." I guess I'll be running eclipse for a shell from now on.
I figure though, you have to trust someone.
I would assume that it would be the same way ships handle this to cool engines. Its essentially a two or three stage system, with either pure water or a glycol mix on the second stage. This limits your corrosion to short lengths of pipe. The ship i was on used impressed current cathodic protection. Contrary to what you would expect, we never had any electrical problems. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathodic_protection
There are also optimization programs that run on the OS the communicate with the hypervisor. These apps need to be written for the specific os that uses them. I cant remember what they're called but they essentially have the function of installing drivers for the emulated hardware.
I haven't looked into this, so feel free to add correct or add to what I've said.
Me. My parents have 2 computers in the house where one moves frequently. The sole purpose of connecting them is so we can play PvP on Starcraft / WarCraft / FarCry. I had a box of cable and a couple ends sitting around so I made one. Simple and cheap. What more could you ask for?
I regularly run LAN parties at my school and very few things ever go missing. I might come home from one short a network cable, but its not a big deal to me. I wouldn't worry too much about pricey things unless your supplying it. Its kinda obvious if someone is walking away with 2 monitors when they came in with one. People will generally look after their own possessions.
What i would worry about is the venue. If you leave a big mess after, you're responsible for it.
Armadillo Run requires a PC running Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP.
I know it can run windows, but I would rather give them a good impression of western civilization. If anyone knows of a linux port, i would love to play it.

One down, 99 more to go!
Anyone remember SIM0NE?
For the n00bs, the above post is in ROT13. Here is a link for a converter.

Anyone able to translate that into number of trees saved?
And how many Libraries of Congress is that?

So we need more file sharing sites to protect us from the other file sharing sites!
Organic != made by life. Means nonmetals, so Carbon, Nitrogen Sulfur and related compounds.

Ah yes, the internet. Where men are men, women are men, and 15 year old girls from Florida are FBI agents...

This is true. Maybe they had some help from ITC

I nominate this post for the Ask Slashdot section.
I agree. It should be much easier.

Same thing happened when I went looking for a girlfriend too.

Does someone have a car analogy?
