  1. I "played" it for a while on I Love Bees Coming to an End · · Score: 1

    Got pretty involved at first, when it was like a mystery and there was backstory to try and untwine.

    But then the axons happened. And instead of a mystery, it was like a really straightforward scavenger hunt. And only people in certain cities could play. And the only thing you got out of it were audio clips.

    The only actual puzzles that cropped up were solved by the ARG community in a matter of hours. As some people started to interact with the ILB characters, the whole game started to get impacted by the actions of just a person or two. Instead of a community detective story, ILB turned into a quasi-interactive radio play.

    Still cool, but sort of a let down to those of us who got a taste of an ARG.

    The only way you could say that this is DOOM with just updated graphics is if you've never played the original or never appreciated it.

    There's one aspect that is pretty much the same - id is trying to scare you when you play their game. Everything else about the gameplay looks different.

    And hey - let's pretend this was DOOM with just better graphics .... SO WHAT? There was game like that - it was called Serious Sam and it was hella fun.

    Man, gamers can be the biggest whiners. Isn't there some movie you haven't seen that you can complain about instead?

  5. His math is off on Specs For id's Next Game After Doom 3 Calculated · · Score: 2, Interesting

    He isn't taking into account the correct variables.

    It depends utterly on what tech id uses.

    Doom -> Doom 2. Took 1 year apart. Why? Same engine.

    Doom2 -> Quake ... 2 years. Different engine.

    Quake 3 -> Doom 3 ... 5 years. Different engine.

    So if, as rumored, id Project X uses the same engine (or a mildly improved one), we'll probably see it 2005, 2006 at the latest.

    Not 2007

  13. I, Robot the Illustrated Screenplay on I, Robot Hits the Theaters · · Score: 1

    OK, apologies if this has already been brought up.

    Harlan Ellison wrote a screenplay for I, Robot with assistance from Asimov many moons ago. Asimov was extremely happy with this screenplay and felt it would make a great, serious adult sf film.

    Sadly, it was never made, but they did make the Illustrated Screenplay:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/07 43 486595/qid=1090006147/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl 14/102-8982569-9139340?v=glance&s=books&n=5078 46

    Clearly, this movie isn't that version. It comes from "Batman & Robin" Akiva, and hence I'm pretty suspect of it. Wish they had kept their original title and left Asimov alone.

  15. Eventually graphics will bite us.. on Videogame Graphic Advances - Not That Important? · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Sooner or later all these high end engines are going to raise the cost of games. Every time these guys go from 10,000 to 100,000 poly models, that's just that much more time spent in a studio trying to get killer models done, and then there's the additional texture work, sound, etc.

    The engine might come out of the box to run at these level, but the asset work still requires that much more work to complete.

    I'm seeing this all over the place in the (unreal) mod community. People don't want small mods anymore, they want commercial quality games. The problem is - making that quality gets more time consuming, requires more organization, etc. Few mod teams have the steam and those that do can rarely get out innovative work (which IMO, is the job of mods) ... or they're small pro shops looking to make a name for themselves.

    I'm actually looking to make use of the 2D aspects of Unreal to lower asset costs.

    But back on topic - the high end nature of the graphics keep increasing the production costs, which eventually are going to have to increase product cost.

  16. Re:That's Great... on Post-Anniversary, Star Wars Galaxies Analyzed · · Score: 1

    Sadly, offline portions to online games that are really connected are almost always cheatfests. See Diablo for more.

    City Of Heroes, however, can have some rewarding non-team aspects to it. I spent half of last night waving off team and sidekick requests because I just wanted to level up on my own for a while. Plus, it has the neat side effect that you can party up without even really doing so. Several brawls I got into had impromtu assists by wandering heroes.

    For an offline/online experience - I think we'll need to wait for a different persistence model. One that is relatively unexploitable. I'm playing with this in Unreal mods - the idea that all the "character" information is in fact stored on the client, but that the idea of how powerful a character can be is controlled by the server. That way you can play offline or online on different servers, and everyone is happy.
