Ostensibly: The offending ECU code will have to be removed and it'll probably mean that they'll have to add a urea injection device meaning you'll have another tank to fill up and a limp mode (like 10mph) if that tank runs out of fluid. All of this creates financial problems for VW but it also creates a dilemma for customers who have the cars; your new efficient eco-friendly car is a dud. When I tested a Blue TDI a couple of years ago the salesman touted not having the Diesel fluid issue and the high efficiency and if I'd bought one I'd cerainly be looking up a lawyer right now to argue to VW to buy the car back.

From what I've been reading the disabling code increased MPG so the trade-off of lower CO2 emissions isn't a saving grace for higher NOx emissions. That means if you own one of these, your mileage will go down and Diesel fluid will most likely be in your future creating less contentment with the vehicle you purchased.

It'll probably be one of the biggest class action suits in recent memory.

My father, who's 87, has smoked since he was 12. He started rolling his own and smoked Camels, sometimes two packs a day. Yeah he's one of those data points that contradict what we're being told and know but there he is still. There are things that are bad for us in the environment, it's just that the "evidence" points in different directions. Science is done, counter science or spin is done and in general the population is confused. I don't want to throw gasoline on a fire but look at climate change for how spin and one study after another gets convoluted into a big furball. For decades the Tobacco Industry did its best to deflect suspicion away from the fact that smoking causes health issues, all on graduating scales up to including death. With all of the hoopla around obesity and health issues associated with that this is now the next frontier. I suspect you'll see Frito-Lay, Pepsi and all the junk food cadre get together and start putting funding out there for their own spin. Don't believe me? Look at all the commercials and press that are generated every time a tax is proposed on soft drinks.

  14. Surprised? on Lenovo Collects Usage Data On ThinkPad, ThinkCentre and ThinkStation PCs · · Score: 1

You all probably carry a cell phone which tracks everything you do, where you are what you click and what apps you run. Additionally those apps from various vendors do everything they can to obtain more information about you and your habits. Users of Windows software for years have had "send anonymous data to Microsoft to improve our products." While the intent may be noble, it's veiled at creating information about you, marketable information that they can sell or use for competitive advantage. There's no difference here. Of course you can re-image the system and move on without the Lenovo tracking but if you're on Windows, there's tracking going on. Linux and others not so much.

So don't be surprised if any consumer product, even your thermostat tracks you.
