MS-DOS had already gotten big by 1985, so even if Steve Jobs stayed in control of Apple it would not necessarily be the case that Apple would have become the dominant OS vendor. That was around the time the cheap DOS clone computers started to be sold and businesses were going with the platform IBM was backing.
That says a lot. I know a good number of Apple employees and although a lot of them have become rich, their primary motivation isn't money. From what I've heard the working environment at Apple can get tense, but not that horrible. People are under a lot of pressure, but generally the drive is to create great products.
In my opinion the word niggardly is a bit obscure, rarely used and bound to be misunderstood. There are plenty of other words with the same meaning. The dictionary entry you reference above mentions the possible misunderstanding.
From my point of view the word niggardly is a bit obscure, rarely used and bound to be misunderstood. I think it is best avoided. There are plenty of other words with the same meaning. The dictionary entry you reference above indicates that misunderstanding can arise.
Read the Byte article about Simon: http://web.archive.org/web/19990221174856/byte.com/art/9412/sec11/art3.htm Some of the things mentioned sound eerily reminiscent of the iPhone (esp. the part about phones not being sold for over $500 and most people expecting them for free, no handwriting recognition, battery life). If IBM kept at it they might have become a significant player in the cell phone market. This paragraph is a hoot:
But perhaps Simon's biggest phone perk is that it can act like a pager. When a call comes in and goes unanswered, the caller can leave a phone number, which is recorded in Simon's pager menu. Simon then beeps and darkens the Phone Pager button. It can store up to nine numbers, which you call back with a one-touch selection.
we also tax resident aliens, illegal aliens, tourists, prisoners without giving them representation. although it is a issue, i don't think it is as big of a deal as you make it to be.
if you take a trip outside of the U.S., you'll also be taxed without representation.
In the case of Rongorongo, if it is a written language, then it is probably a written form of the Rapa Nui, the language of Easter Island. In any case since Rapa Nui is a polynesian language we'd be able to compare it to other Polynesian languages. However, this has already been done with no success.
Part of the problem with Rongorongo and with other undeciphered scripts is that we don't know what counts as a distinct character, the character vs. glyph problem. It is not clear from the article if this system helps with that problem. The article doesn't have enough detail, but it seems that their system makes a lot of assumptions that you can't make when trying to work with an undeciphered script.
I'm not sure what kanji test you're referring to, but if you mean the Kanji kentei ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji_kentei ), then the pre-1 level version of this test includes 3000 kanji, which probably already include all the Kanji included in the new standard.
The people they fired (or let step down or whatever) seemed to be intelligent people. Perhaps not fully successful, but brighter than your average Microsoft employee. They should have fired S. Ballmer. What good ideas has he come up with?
There are a handful of third-party companies that make a stylus for iPhone and iPad. Is that what you want? Or do you want an official iPad stylus from Apple?
Do you carry your ID when you take out the garbage? While in a sento? Part of the problem with the Japanese law is that it doesn't make clear reasonable exceptions to this rule. If you are just outside your house without your ID will you be allowed to go back inside to get it?
Also, what if you are a Japanese-citizen with non-typical appearance for Japanese? You'll probably end up having to carry ID to prove your citizenship. Same with the law in Arizona.
after embalmment and 3000 years there is shrinkage, significant shrinkage!

Perhaps the parent was joking, who knows.

There are apparently some videos going around which show the problem with the yet to be released BlackBerry 9800

actually the meso-american civilizations knew about the wheel, but only used it for toys. i guess they thought it had no serious applications...
Cue the obligatory Penny Arcade "I'm the guy who gives hand jobs to Steve Jobs" strip. Seriously.
Wha? Did Penny Arcade censor that strip? I can't find it.
for an Open Source community it's outstanding how many Apple fanatics here are, when they are obviously the largest abuser of OSS or open technology
exactly how is Apple an abuser of OSS?

you'll never need more than nine.
In 2008 it was used in an advertising campaign for Qantas, so that might be where a big chunk of the royalties come from.
This.......is........Australia!!!!

I think the parent's explanation makes more sense, as "do or give up". Under your explanation it means "do or prepare to do".
Woz wanted to make products he would use, Jobs makes products the general public can use.
Is Shawn Fanning being enlisted because he's especially good at recognizing offending members? Or because his member is especially offensive?

Ron aimed for short term profitability, Mohammed for long term scalability.
The problem is that they're deciding *now* to reject all compilers *indefinitely*. They're not giving 3rd-party compilers a chance, at all.
When have you heard the kind of negativity about Microsoft's competing Silverlight technology?
People would first have to start using it before they give it negative reviews.
