We had a 20GB IBM Deskstar (probably 60GXP series) HDD fail at work recently; it was part of a mirrored (RAID 1) array, so no serious harm was done.

Being inquisitive folk, we cracked open the case to see what was inside. The cause of the failure was abundantly clear: the head assemblies had scraped the shiny, magnetic coating off about 2/3rds of the disk surface (on both sides) revealing the glass platter. I've never seen a glass platter before - they are so cool! :-D

The extent of damage was equally impressive; our "museum" of salvaged bits includes various head-crashed platters of considerable vintages, but this disk will certainly take pride of place in the collection.

So let me get this straight: US industry alone spent around half a billion buckaroonies cleaning up the last little virus/worm fiasco, we get about a half-dozen or so of these little gems per year, and yet it's TOO EXPENSIVE(tm) to engineer in security that would stop this kind of thing from happening?

Yes, but look at who's paying: US industry paying $$$ to clean up, vs. Microsoft R&D paying $$$ to fix the problem properly. Is in any wonder that Microsoft isn't interested in doing so, particularly when they can use it as a lever to force upgrades to new versions of its software?

Actually, to correct myself, the Tasmanian Devil is not a type of Dunnart, although they both belong to the genus "Sminthopsis".

Tassie Devils and Dunnarts are in the same family, Dasyuridae. They are not in the same genus; the Tassie Devil belongs to the genus Sarcophilus (specifically, Sarcophilus laniarius.)

This page has a pretty neat browser of the taxonomy of the Dasyuridae family (amongst others).

I've seen a couple of dunnart species, Fat-tailed Dunnart and Chestnut Dunnart, in the wild. They are cute, particularly when mum has the kids hanging to her back. While the resemble mice, they're actually quite ferocious insectivores (with nasty, big, pointy teeth - well, pointy anyway.)

Also, you can save fuel and contribute to a cleaner environment.

Pushing your car can also cause unburnt fuel to poison the catalytic converter, and pollute the atmosphere with hydrocarbons. In certain situations, the unburnt fuel in the exhaust pipe may explode, possibly taking out the muffler, catalytic converter etc. with it. If this occurs, you should report the problem to your fuel supplier and/or exhaust manufacturer.
