Large house, bit of property, etc. In the 'present' (1985) he only had the garage, and there was a Burger King behind it. There was reference in the movie to the doctor's estate burning down. Perhaps he did this for insurance money, and then sold the land to a mega corp for more profit, enabling him to continue his research...
