Warren Spector tried to make us believe that this was non-essential rubbish

You'd think he would have learned from history.

This is the same kind of thing that happened to Origin with the Ultima series (which Spector has worked on) oh so long ago. Ultima 8 was stipped-down and more action-oriented than the previous games, and lost a lot of the interactivity that had been there since Ultima 6. When fans complained, Origin derided them saying Ultima was about more than just "baking bread". They were seemingly oblivious of the effect that the immersion factor has on game enjoyment.

Um, you do realize that I was the Lead Programmer on DX:IW, right?

I hate to burst your bubble, but you don't quite yet have the name recognition of John Carmack or Richard Garriott.

As far as reviews go, DX:IW ended up with marginally worse reviews than its predecessor, see:

It's funny that you link the X-Box reviews of the games. The PC reviews are lower.

Note that the vast majority of reviews are in the 80-100% range. And then read a few of the ones that aren't to get a gauge on their quality.

I've never put much stock in reviews. Review sites are dependant on the good will of game companies to get advanced copies of games so they can get reviews out in a timely manner. Not too many are willing to bite the hand that feeds them. Even Daikatana got good reviews. However, if you look at the ratings and comments of most people who've played the game, they're not too rosy.

What are you *talking* about? That's the *speed limit*. There's nothing at all wrong with driving the speed limit. It's the maximum speed you can go. You can decrease your speed, but don't call someone following the law a "jerk". If you want to break the law (and don't hurt anyone else) that's generally your deal, but hassling people because *they* aren't breaking the law to facilitate *you* breaking the law is ridiculous.

Thankfully some state legislators have half a clue and don't agree with you:

"Illinois is one of 20 states that now have some sort of prohibition on driving in the left lane. Basically, the rule is this: You can drive in the left lane for as long as you want, unless you are holding up traffic. In that case, you must move to another lane within half a mile or be subject to a $75 ticket. In California, you can be cited for impeding traffic if you are not keeping up with the flow of cars. The recommendation of the California Highway Patrol: If faster-moving traffic is riding your rear, move over no matter if you are doing the speed limit."

Baldur's Gate 2 also increased the level on the monsters depending on what the level of your party members were. One time through the game I did the quest with the red dragon very early on and werewolves (or some other lycanthropes, I forget exactly.) On a seperate time through the game, I did that quest much later in the game when my characters were much more powerful and instead encountered greater werewolves (a pain-in-the-ass to kill, BTW.)

I though this method of auto-difficulty worked really well since a few levels in AD&D can really change the balance of things.
