  1. No privacy! on Teen Creates Device to Track Speeding · · Score: 1

I would not mind seeing an option on reporting the actual location, for adults at least. Otherwise I don't see any privacy concerns. Speed limits are there for your safety and that of those around you. How fast you were going is never a matter of privacy.

That's it. Everything else meets or bests Plasma in other categories. Only the truly high end plasma screens top dlp or lcd as far as contrast and brightness. I've never understood why people spend the extra cash on something inherently more fallible with 0 or next to 0 gain in quality.

At first I thought of cancelling because I'm pretty much assured if the equipment is checked it will be "lost" or damaged. Now that you can carry on small things again I've gotten a smaller case that will fit everything, but I've also taken out an additional insurance policy just in case!

General populace is not high brow.

Highbrow movies seldom do well at the box office, and it's why they're the minority of films, generally made independantly, and relegated only to a cult status 9/10.

It's the same with games, except the major audience is younger so in most cases less sophisticated. There's even less of a market. That's not to say there aren't some excellent, intelligent, and mature games. Some examples have already been posted, Shenmue I think is most in line with the author's perspective.

  5. Assuming Vista is Widely Adopted on Windows Vista and the Future of Hardware · · Score: 1

I see no indication that people will switch to vista, other than new hardware vendors preloading it. It really seems that no one is excited, or even INTERESTED in the features. Most corps I deal with will delay as long as possible for several reasons. I see Vista as the #1 opportunity for alternative operating systems to gain ground. Really, I see this as the begining of the end of MS reign, but that may be a tad premature.

I installed windows XP, winamp, all the video and audio codecs I wanted, and have a front end from the group that made xbox media center. It works rather well for watching our vast library of fansubbed anime, tv, mp3, mp3+g karaoke, and I can fire up firefox and watch the latest viral youtube videos too.

Not to mention World of Warcraft looks pretty good on a 50" HDTV.

just FYI, I went to engineering school, and took many classes in industrial, mechanical, electrical and even chemical engineering. I didn't minor in any of those, it was just out of interest. Don't assume someone's belittling your profession, it'll cause stress.

  10. Wearing multiple hats. on Engineers Working Harder for Their Paycheck · · Score: 4, Interesting

I have been one of these hat-wearers since 1997. The reason being, I tend to stick to smaller businesses. The agile ones instead of the corporate behemoths. I do contract to the larger corps occasionally but it's not a working environment I enjoy. My salary has increased every year I have been employed through three companies and various contracts. Moving up is about expanding your experience as well as your spectrum of abilities.

But it's not about being able to do everyone's job! It's about being able to understand what other departments are doing, knowing enough of their job so you can work with them efficiently. Not only is it important in a communication perspective, but it's priceless in the troubleshooting and design phases of product development.

Bottom line is, every employee of value--anywhere--needs to be able to step back and see the bigger picture of the corporation/foundation/office/whatever. Technical specialists that can't see beyond their single language, single router, server, whatever are a dime a dozen. It's great to have someone with extreme expertise, but they are also easily replaceable.

    3) If we did not have such a horribly broken legal system it would be economically efficient. We would not be wasting our time and resources on the person.

Perhaps in the future there will be a better alternative. As it stands now, I don't think there's any sort of rehabilitation possible for most criminals, at least not an effective one, and definitely not an economical one. What other alternatives do we have here for justice/righting the wrong? Exile doesn't work in this day and age, and obviously the man could never pay back the damage he caused.

I've been using Linux since 1994, and it's come a long way, but it hasn't really closed the gap any since the mid to late 90's, it's just been keeping pace since then with still a huge gap between.

I don't need games on a phone, ever.

I usually end up buying the lowest model nokia's as they come close to fullfilling these needs and seem to have the best reception of any phone available in the US, but they're still typically packed with featues I don't want.

Adding features increases complexity, which requires a more complicated or in depth UI. It can potentially eat into your battery time, and with some models the actual phone features and processing abilities are sacrificed so that they can pack more novelty crap on.

It is poorly written, and poorly executed. You ask for examples of things that are better. I'd say most things. Do you want something specificly dealing with the same existentialist vs nihlistic themes? Or do you need something heavily laced with judeo christian mysticisms?

Just because it's japanese, has psudeo religious overtones, doesn't make it good.

Really the anime was pretty poorly written, the creators are definitely clever and creative, but it was clear they didn't have much plan for the series and just got lucky (in america at least.)

Anime came first, was written and directed by otaku-loved crazyboy hideki anno. The manga is written and illustrated by the character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. The relation between the two is pretty loose. The manga is actually being written well, if slowly.
