You seem to imply that having autonomous cars removes human error from the equation. You are ignoring that: B) The algorithms these cars use are still made by humans, and are thus susceptible to human error.

Algorithms are not susceptible to human error, requirements for those algorithm's are. If you want to make sure the requirements are correct, you won't leave it to the government. And actual safe speed of a vehicle through a specific piece of terrain is often grossly under the limits of the vehicle, and the limits of the vehicle are often grossly above what the human body can tolerate. Traffic collisions are the cause of people without proper training or experience to know the capabilities of their vehicle given the conditions under which they are driven. In the end the problem is with education, which also seems to be a problem for a lot of our elected, chosen, or inherited representatives in the world, as well as the occasional Slashdot poster as well.

The author is definitely from California, having chosen Richter as his example scale. Since Charles Richter probably isn't the best example, and since these kinds of things are usually named after their authors, and since Jay was obviously modest enough to not propose naming it after himself, I suggest it be called the Cline scale. Certainly, it might not be better than having Jefferies Tubes named after you, but it's better than the john. Congratulations Jay, something will be named after you. Someone make a wikipedia entry.

Go get yourself a Sony Vaio Z and for a similar price as the 16gig 3g iPad with keyboard, and the 256 gig 13inch Air, you get a lighter, faster, in between battery life laptop that with an extension battery will match the iPad on battery life. One day I want to end up in a conference with someone using an iPad while managing a keyboard to type, while I sit next to them playing Civilization V.

We really need robots that can farm, harvest, ship commodities, make food, and ship food, for free. Then we can stop worrying about that and then just worry about housing. After that we can start automating the rest of the world, like making robots that fix the broken farmer robots. The idea isn't to put the farmers out of work per-say, but to give the farmers more time to do whatever the hell else they want, even if it's just to stay in the farmhouse and watch pron. Then I'd want to move into the farming industry myself.

  9. Who do you trust? on Facebook Cookies Track Users Even After Logging Out · · Score: 1

It's not even just that Facebook tracks you, it's that whoever has a file presence on the sites you visit can track you. it used to be Double Click, but since Google AdWords and Analytics were released they've really been the best trackers. If the site uses Analytics or AdWords, it means you're loading a .js file from Google, and to get that .js file you have to send them your Google cookie, hence you're tracked.

CNN for example sends your requests to: scorecardresearch.com (comScore), imrworldwide.com (Neilsen), and Facebook.
    cnet uses: scorecardresearch.com, imrworldwide.com, crowdscience.com, gigya.com, Facebook, and Twitter.
slashdot uses: scorecardresearch.com, and Google Analytics,

You can realistically not include comScore or Neilsen because they don't know who you are, just where you've been. So in the end the question comes down to, who do you trust, Sergey/Larry or Zuck?

  16. Bigger monitor on Cable Management To Defeat Clutter? · · Score: 1

The best solution ever is to just get a bigger monitor and hang it all from the back of it. Really though if you have 3 computers on your desk it means none of them are fast enough with enough video to do what you need. Your desk should maybe have 2 systems, a workstation and a notebook. More than that and you are being a packrat. I do like the peg board under the desk idea, but my desk surface is glass. Then I like the eye-hooks with the carbineers, but the supports for the desk are wrought iron, I'd hate to drill holes through it. In the end the cleanest and most professional look is velcro straps and split loom tubing together. And limiting yourself to less hardware is a lot of effort on it's own, and in the end I still have surround speaker wires running around behind me, you can't get rid of all of the wires.

  19. Logitech of course on Best Mouse For Programming? · · Score: 1

I rather enjoy the texture and customizability of the Logitech G5. It's got a DPI controller on the top so when I need to do some precise photoshop work I can move slower. It's got a variable weighting system so you can have as much inertia as you prefer. It's teflon feet are very easy to slide, and the wheel has left and right tilt as well as Logitech's great scroll feel. In the end though, the G5 is a desktop mouse, with a braided wrapped cable that reaches forever and would seriously get in the way of a portable notebook environment. If you absolutely must have a wireless mouse, I have to recommend getting one of Logitech's non-bluetooth mice, the responsiveness when coming off idle time is faster than the bluetooth models. Any of them will work great and have good battery life, but the ones with the nano-receiver are better for portable use, just leave it in your notebook and don't worry about losing it. Regardless though, if you're developing at a desktop, get the G5, it's the best mouse in the history of Logitech.
