    The Israeli post will deliver it to the Western wall where it will be put between the stones of the wall. Putting notes to G-d at the Kotel is a very old Jewish tradition. They bring the letters there several times a year.

    Universities often recomend specific computers, why? Well there are several resons, but majorly you know some of the computers will break and students will drag them down to the university computer shop and therefore it helps if you limit what most people are using to a few brands.

    OK the geeks are going to buy what they want. But then again they probably can fix it on their own too.

    I'm glad when I was at brandeis they had standard cat 5, my laptop at the time was a 10 year old powerbook duo that I picked up cheap on ebay and it would not be able to do anything with fiber.

    A few problems with this:

    1) Not everyone has a home computer. Its that pesky voting rights act.

    2) Home computers are hackable

    3) the protocalls would have to be reasonably open, and therefore hackable.

    I personally I'm partial to the make an "X" on a piece of paper voteing, Its simple, easy to varify and we all know how it works.

    I was in the Office Depot in the Jerusalem Mall the other day, and I saw what looked like an original 2600 joystick. It appears like they took an old 2600 system put it on the joystick base with a few of the old games and are selling them as is. I think it was about 150 NIS (~$3) but as I don't have TV to hook it to, and don't play many games anyhow I didn't look to closely/

    And the company has no operations in the USA. I know of a company here in Israel that is a call center for the USA (customer service for long distance). Its a seperate company from the parent company. But they still have some sort of US presence.

    Actually my flat-mate and a number of other folks I know work there.

    Also it should be noted that the FAA has to be involved, this this is an airplane (at least part of the time) you will note the N number on its tail. It flies in US controled airspace, so must do so acording the the FAR's (Federal Aviation Regs) Now I would not be suprised if they have some wavers in a few places, and they probably work very closly with ATC before each flight. The air over the USA from 18,000 to 70,000 ft is controled airspace and you need a clearance from ATC to be there.

    I imagine they spend several hours on the phone with the local ATC center before each flight to get this worked out.

    I wonder what the seperation looks like to ATC.

    Yes, but on a test flight where something could go wrong and kill the crew you don't have people you don't need on board. Later they will put passangers on, but for right now there is no reason to do it. You would just put them at risk.

    IF someone were to ask me to key them into a secured area that they didn't have access to I would say no. There may be reasons that the building has security you know. I don't know all of them but for those of us in the real world things like pass cards are a frequent fact of life. And if it was RMS doubly so.

    In General Aviation there was a problem for a while with People putting Jet-A in aircraft that take Avgas. (Or vise versa) this is really bad all around and requires flushing the system and probably other stuff as well. They solved it by making the hole where you put the nozel a different size, so you can't put the wrong one in. (ALso color coded stickers)

    The problem is that the folks who made this UI made things harder not easier for the average user. I don't care how my print queue works, I just want to be able to hit "Print" and have something (and the correct something) come out on paper. Idealy it should go out on my local network and see if there are any printers already there and offer to add them. Now If I'm running a department with 100 computers and 10 printers I may care about the details but if I have a home network with 2-4 computers I don't. Just make it work, I have better things to do with my time that fight with CUPS.

    Wow, I almost understood that! I can't under stand arabic script at all, but the letters are similar enough to the hebrew ones in name and sound that I can figure it out.

    Actually there are a number of Jewish works that have been written in Arabic but using hebrew script.

    Nice theory. Tell that to the "Mother" of two who blew herself up at the Erez crossing point last week. She killed 4 Israelis and left about 6000 Palistianians out of work for the near future.

    I like rockports, they are my standard walking around town shoe. And have been on and off for years. I have two pair but one needs to be taken to to have new soles put on it.

    As far as I can recall they have never set off the metal detectors at the central bus station or airport (or any of the other ones I walk threw every day). I probably deal with metal detectors more often than most people.

    OK i will say that the idea that I'm buying something made in a sweat shop in china by someone poor shlub making $.03/hour bothers me. But I'm more worried about it in clothing than DVD players. I buy clothing more often than DVD players.

    I just don't know what to do about it. Maybe I'll pull out the sewing machine and do more of my own sewing.

    As well as teterboro and Westchester county, McArthur and Islip. There are no shortage of runways around New York city! If you are low on fuel turn on the radio and tell New York Aproach. Trust me the words "Declairing fuel emergency" will get you priority to a runway. I still don't trust this system. When I am flying an airplane I want to be the one flying. And If I am flying over manhattan its probably for a good reason, and one of two things are true:

    1) I have Clearence to do so from ATC. (They will issue it sometimes if you ask.

    2) I have declaired an emergency for some reason and I'm doing my best to get my ship onto a runway *NOW*.

    The Federal Air Regulations say in an emergency a pilot can ignore the FARS as needed.

    The US DOD might not have known where they would have ended up using it. But they knew that sooner or later they would. Part of the job of the US Millitary is to go anywhere they are needed and while there they need phones. It just happened that "There" was Afganistan then Iraq.

    As for big Flops, How about the Apple 3?

    And even if some of the morons learn, there are more where they came from. Remeber the spamers need a very small number of "hits" to make a profit. If out of 100,000 emails they get 50 sales they are making good money. I dare you to show me a pool of 100,000 people without 50 people who are stupid, clueless about the net or just plain suckers.

    I like the idea of having my spam program send them junk mail back. If for each spam sent they get 50 back they will go under. But I don't think AOL etc wants to build a server farm that big.

    Because if you had a sample of Smallpox from 1888 or so you could compare it to the one in the vault and see if there have been any changes in the DNA. Some Virii change over time more than others.

    I live in Israel and almost everyone has a solar hot water heater on their roof. It has an electric or gas element in it to heat water on days when the solar is not going to work. (Or if you want a shower late at night/first thing in the morning etc) But its a standard thing here. We got nice hot water out of it. Making electricty out of sun light is complex, but making hot water is simple.

    IBM (and other big companies) spend a huge sum on long term R&D. They have projects in the lab that will be the hot new thing in 5-10 or even 15 years they hope. Ofcourse many of them will fail, but as long as a few hit big they win overall. And in advanced R&D if you don't have most of your ideas fail you are not being bold enough.

    Who said my spiritual beliefs are in any way weak? I gave you a 30 second blurb on something not a long discorse. One could write a long book on Jewish belief and practice (and I can point you at many) but I didn't feel like taking up a huge debate on slashdot of the laws of Hannuka or what have you.

    However the foundation of Jewish Belief (Exodus 24:7) is when the Jewish people say "We will do and we will understand" to the presentation of the Torah at Saini. The doing is the fundimental thing. It is not enought to believe if you don't lite the mennorah for hanukka you have not observed hanukka. In order to observe the holiday of sukka you have to dwell in a sukkah and do lullav and etrog and so forth.

    We do these things because G-d told us to. 3300 or so years ago we were given the Torah at Saini it gave us 613 commandments of things to do and things not to do. Those that can we still can do (there are some that are not done anymore) we do.

    For christians it is important to Belive. For Jews it is important to do the mitzvot.
