I see people driving $100k Teslas, and they're not doing it to be green. It's the new status symbol of wealth (used to be BMW/Benz).

It seemed to be one of the first articles about us rather than about some technology or company.

Recall that this story was from back in '99, way before being in IT/computers was cool or mainstream.

  7. Content owners will win... on Disney Is Pulling Star Wars and Marvel Films From Netflix (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 3

People care more about the content than the medium it's delivered on. Let's see, we watched Disney movies in the theater, then bought them on tape, then bought them on DVD, then streamed them online via $cable_company, then Netflix and now Disney's Service.

Who always made money in all those forms? Disney. Not the movie theater, the VHS tape mfg/distributor, video stores, DVD mfgs etc etc... Disney.. People will be wanting to watch Disney flicks for the next upteen years.

Same thing with all the other content.

We could have a scenario where every content owner has their own streaming service, so you pay them $10/mo, and then buy an aggregator box/service on top of them (Roku etc). Now you're back to paying $100/mo.

We haven't seen ESPN do it with sports, but once they get around to streaming it standalone (and not requiring a cable provider), it's gonna sell like gangbusters.

Then yes. These things are in every strip mall in the SF bay area.

These bootcamps aren't about turning kids in successful programmers or software engineers any more than petting zoos are making zoologists out of kids. It's a way to make money, pure and simple.

These ideas of setting up a server at grandma's house two states away are absurd. You think she wants a server or even a RaspberryPi with a HDD attached running 24/7?

Either backup to an online service like Backblaze, run a server in a hosting provider, or ship your HDDs off to Recall or other archival storage company. Never understood why IT people around here want to involve their friends/family in overly complex backup/DR schemes. Think about them before suggesting your rich aunt buy a 1000 cartridge tape library.

  19. Better to be content owner than delivery on Bill Simmons Says ESPN Blew It By Not Embracing Tech (cnbc.com) · · Score: 1

Disney knows this. They've got a huge library of content, and love it when you consume it in different formats. They don't care if you buy it online, stream it, VHS, DVD, laser disc etc. Netflix and Amazon know this and adapted as demonstrated by their switch to original programming.

Notice how the VHS tape manufacturers are suffering or the companies that manufacture DVD discs? Technology changes and boom, nobody is buying VHS tapes any more.

BUT we're still watching disney films, and watching sports. ESPN should have fully embraced their ability to own content and then make that content (sports programming) on as many devices as possible. Sports are sports regardless of the platform i'm watching it on, just make it as easy as possible to watch it.

I'd much rather pay $15/month to get all of ESPN's programming than to have to buy season passes for NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL individually.

We're nolonger in an age where a ride is based on time and distance, but on your economic standing.

What about charging more for "dangerous parts of the city"? $5 more for picking someone up in Oakland rather than Atherton (home of the CEOs)?

Or you could crank it up $10 more if you were going to the airport (bonus if Uber could determine when your flight was and jack up the price if they thought you might be late and needed a ride right now!).

What about automatic "surge pricing" if you were taking an Uber to the hospital? Surely, you'd be willing to pay an extra $20 if you were in labor?
