  1. Parody of themselves on HP Launches Ink Patent Violation Manhunt · · Score: 1

So rather than research how to come up with a better strategy than the sell the ink and give away the printer approach. They put their money into hiring scientists and lawyers and to go after small companies because they are selling ink for the printers. Whats next? Go after Epson because their printers kind of look like the ones we make.

This should be an episode of "The Office"

  3. Sci Fi movies on Reuters Admits, Pulls Doctored Photos · · Score: 1

Geeks have always known this was the inevitable. I cant count how many movies I have seen that have shown image or video manipulation as the wave of the future with advertisements and big brother messages being blurted on big screens everywhere.
It was just a matter of having technology cheap enough or accessible enough to be done cost effectively.
Now it appears any 13 year old with a below average PC can manipulate images to make them look authentic.

So according the same movies soon there will be an underground group of rebels that wishes to break the masses from the chains of manipulation or make information free than filtered. While constantly battling government forces or agencies that wish to stop them.

  5. Consistent with the past on Apple Losing Touch With the OS Community? · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is not different than how Apple has always approached things. They have always been about form and function. Developing the next killer app or killer hardware. And making everything as proprietary or closed as possible.
Doesnt matter how stubborn it may seem at the time and goes against potential profits or their customer base, its just classic Apple thinking.

While people may remark that Jobs should be thrilled at their level of success and want things opened up or looking towards Mac's as a game machine, or whatever else it may be. This was more Woz's thinking not so much Job's. Job's has always been the suit side of it all, that happens to be in jeans and loafers.

  6. makes sense on Sony's Obsession with Proprietary Formats · · Score: 1

It may not make sense to us regular folk that go to work and collect our checks to keep wasting time and effort of forcing a proprietary format but for someone like Sony that has the resources if I were Sony I keep trying to do it.
Its one thing to develop, market, manufacture, distribute etc... the next new radio/tv/gaming/remote control... to earn large profits to feed the 800lb gorilla. But how little effort would it take to earn some extra change if you controlled a widely used format?
Considering they already have a level of control in all facets of entertainment, film, tv, hardware, gaming, PC's, music,...

  8. Re:Good, Fast, Cheap - pick any two. on Computer Buying Experiences at B&M Stores · · Score: 1

This applies to almost anything. Clothing, appliances, food, etc...
Most people, if its not their hobby or interested in something and feel they need it will opt for what they percieve as the best quality they can get at the price they are willing to spend.
Which explains why WalMarts do well, everything they sell is junk and will fall apart faster than if the average consumer just spent a couple extra bucks.
For instance if I were asked to buy a toaster or iron why would I want to spend $200.00 when I can get the same item for $29.99?

  9. False security on Mafia Boss Using Crook Crypto Captured · · Score: 2, Insightful

I dont know how many managers, executives, or non IT type people I have talked to that think once the firewall is in place we never have to think about it again. Or now that we have an antivirus we can go and do whatever we want and not worry about downloads and such again.
Then they turn the deaf ear until... unfortunately for this guy its going to cost him more than just a few dollars and some downtime.

After being transferred to half a dozen people over the course of about 4 hours and providing the serial number and model number it was something they could not figure out or do for me. Apparently a request like this was never made before and baffled their customer, technical service, and sales.

Whereas when it was IBM run, it would have taken 1 call and 10 minutes.

We also came to realize when one multitasks we tend to forget a thing or two in the mix of multitasking.

Whomever came up with that old saying figured it out long ago. It just depends on how you view your situation.

We can all recall how jazzed everyone was during the .com period regardless how much work and little pay and crappy cubicle or office we worked in, because for many /.'ers we thought we were in our own nirvana and when money was part of it the equation other non-geeks felt the same way. Anyone that has every worked in entertainment industry will see the same, long hours, crappy attitudes and treatment, non-existant pay, no promise of success, but people are drawn to those positions like moths to flame.

Yet on the flip side a highly paid lawyer will frequently leave their partner positions to do something like be a florist, real estate agent, or golf instructor for 1/4 the pay.

Just depends on how you view your circumstances.
