Synic's response: Note that the vast majority of fiber optics that were laid during the dot com period are all what's called "dark" fiber-- that is, they are not currently in use. The problem is that most people are still not on broadband, because it isn't cheap enough, and so the fiber optic networks that were laid down before the dot com bust are just sitting there dormant in the ground. A lot of the companies that funded the insanely rapid expansion of fiber optic networks went out of business (including larger ones such as MCI Worldcom). Some are struggling to get by (such as Qwest) by trying to market and sell their networks in new ways (Video-on-Demand is only one that comes to mind). Additionally, companies that were solely based on enhancing fiber optic technologies like amplifiers have all gone out of business or been gobbled up by larger fish (Cisco) and their products have not really come to market in a big way since there's already an overabundance of fiber in the ground.
If you ended up with needing a module that wasn't compiled or provided with your initial setup it can be a pain in the arse for a newbie to set up and compile the kernel sources themselves.
I doubt they will be able to work their business model of two expansions per year instead of a subscription, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if they prove me wrong (in addition to actually meeting all their goals).
Oh. Right, their graphics look pretty weak too. Here's to hoping they get a new artistic vision (World of Warcraft is easily the nicest in design of all MMORPG's I've seen to date).
Who cares about Mario 128... I'd like some decent games RIGHT NOW...:P I'm pretty pissed off that BG: DA 2 is not coming out on Gamecube, because Snowblind doesn't think it's worth the effort. (Sigh)
Mythic's next game Imperator was announced last *YEAR*... heh... they are just starting to put some development sketches and stuff on the official site for it...
I'm going to have to disagree. If she wants to do that, then fine. Not like her last album didn't bomb anyway... Artists should be able to make their own decisions over their content. If people don't want to buy a whole album, just buy tracks off another artist/band's selection.
Well. If you plan on raising the $5-7 million to start up a single game project, by all means do so (the average amount for developing a quality title these days).
Case in point: gas tax in California is supposed to be earmarked for paying CalTrans to improve roadways and freeways. How much roadwork can you actually see going on in your area? While I know there is activity going on, I'm quite sure that not all of the gas tax money is going where it is claimed to be going.
Damn, look at that character roster. Practically all SNK and Capcom characters from the last few releases... (at a glance I thought I saw Morrigan form Darkstalkers)
"A petition campaigning for someone to accurately recreate DOAX: Beach Volleyball is expected to be up and running within the week".. and in other news, firefighters struggled to put out the flames of MMORPG geeks who had attempted to recreate the Plane of Fire.
I think that the fighting engine for it is rather horrible, actually... but yes, the character designs were wonderful. For instance: a man with a severed limb as a weapon! ha! If you want to see the game that *did* come out, it's called Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers. It directly uses the engine, creates a lame game of fighting opponents for each chamber token of the 36 and you can pick from any of the members of the Wu-Tang rap group. (Ghostface Killah, U-God, Methodman, Rza, Genius, etc)
Particularly, I hate the substitution of "aggravate" for "annoy." Aggravating would be the worsening of a situation, whereas annoying would be something that is being bothersome. The distinction should be clearer.
I guess the dramatic play on Martin Luther drew a different portrait of the situation. The implication was also that various members of the clergy were also debaucherous fornicators.
I hate to break it to you, but there are such things as console LAN parties now (see Xbox/Halo).
I would agree that each person having their own monitor is nice, but sometimes I'd rather be alone in my house playing online or sometimes I'd rather just have the ability to play multiplayer without needing extra hardware units. That way if I'm the only person "on the block" with the new leet console then I can haul it to whoever is providing the food and beverages.;)

"I cast magic missile!"
"At what?? There's nothing there!"
"At the darkness!"

Last one there's a rotten egg?
Only people who suck at vi and emacs would say such a thing.

Since when are city planning commissions god-like? Last I checked they keep throwing in ridiculous amounts of one way streets in some cities...

if everyone got what they needed for free would anyone need to get paid?
Jeez. You're like the fifth person to say the exact same thing.

On Atari: Point taken. Atari 2600 predates my own gaming experience a little so I didn't think of it.
