Sorry, but IMHO these look like something a couple years old now. Sure, the sky textures are pretty enough, but other than that I don't see anything useful here at all. The game models, both landscape & character, look horrendously low polygon.
I'm HONESTLY not trying to be a snob or flame or whatever, but after the images of Half-Life 2, this looks so.... 2000.
I don't think I've ever seen a Video Store that didn't rent console games. Just about every town I've ever been in has a Blockbuster or some other chain-type video store, and even the local mom-n-pop rental places rent console games.
I'm surprised that this is being posted as news, given that theres a big notice saying the site hasn't been updated since April 12, 2002, which is just shy of 10 months ago.... so it would seem to be that this is not new news.
Now, I used to be a fan of Beyond 2000 back in the '80s and early '90s when Discovery aired the TV show in the US here, but why on earth is it still around? It's 2003 folks! Same goes for 20th Century Fox? We really need to get our heads out of our respective 20th century butts.
Once again, we're seeing a very elaborate (and ungainly) design for the next ultra high power graphics chip. As technology progresses, we're accustomed (as it should be) to the new products to be the same physical dimension (or smaller) as the older products. This is how we have such concepts as the PDA, the microATX form factor, just to name a few.
The graphics card arena has been a major exception to this for the last few years. It's one of the few industries that I can think of where the product is actually GROWING in size and becoming more combersome as the technology becomes increasingly faster and more complex. I believe this is a sign that, not unlike how we discovered in the Pentium II/III era, that card/based processor packages are poor product design that are a) larger than necessary b)gum up the works, and c) only enhance the problem of cooling, thus needing continuingly more complex cooling systems.
The current AGP(or PCI or whatever) bus expansion card methodology for video cards can be seen as going through the same problem, especially in the case of the GeForceFX. We've seen these problems previously in the designs for the GeForce3,4, made much fun of them in the case of the 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 cards, and even the latest ATI cards are requiring more power than the AGP bus can provide. Doesn't this show that there is an inherent flaw in the packaging design for this technology?
GPUs need to take the same road that CPUs have taken (and now restored since we now use socket based motherboard solutions again) and be sold soley as the graphics processor, with the memory substructures and soforth built onto the motherboard. This increases the efficiency and ease that the GPU can communicate with the central bus and the rest of the system. In addition, you will no longer need to build an elaborate cooling strucutre to make up for the lack of ventilation provided by the typical AGP/PCI card slot design.
Nvidia is part way there with the NForce already, building the graphics subsystem as a central part of the motherboard chipset and PC bus, but the flaw here remains (as in most integrated motherboard systems) that you are stuck with the technology. Of course, you can upgrade an NForce system with a full GeForce4 FX or Radeon if that is your choosing, but that just brings back the card problem. What needs to be done is to create a NForce type chipset with an FCPGA type socket for the GPU as well as the CPU, that way both systems are imminently upgradable (not to mention the potential benefits in creating a more efficient in-line cooling solution for the interior of the system) and thus our size problems begin to be alleviated.
Myself, I've been really happy with Verizon's service.
*ducks*
No, really. I mean it. I've gone all over the country and almost have never had a problem getting service, and since they use other people's networks I don't run in to the problems that Sprint or Cingular or AT&T people that I know have had getting service. So go figure. *shrug*
Heh- Anyone else see the "NVFairy" on the offical site? If the GeForceFX can do that...then I forsee an entirely new market segment opening up in "Hardware Accelerated" software.
Kind of adds a whole new meaning to the "Force" in GeForce.
The GeForceFX - so fast it leaves skid marks in your wallet!
My solution to the whole email fiasco is to buy a domain name. I bought mine a few years back, and hosted the site on my own system until I moved to an area of "less connection integrity". But anyway, I just use constant email forwarders from my domain to whatever my current ISP is, that way I never have to inform people that I'm changing addresses.
Or- I pay $10 a month, not just for a silly email service, but for an entire webhost including unlimited email:-) Much better deal, I think.
The Blue Gene will contain 65,000 processors and 16 trillion bytes of memory.
That's a LOT of processors.
It's nice to see that some companies have kept the tradition of computers that fill a room or five. Maybe they can throw some vacuum tubes on for old time's sake.
Are you saying you didn't know about this? Usually when someone is supposed to be at an event as a presenter/speaker, they are ASKED about it! It just seems odd, thats all.
I suppose the question should be...if you weren't asked...shouldn't you do something about that? You almost make it sound like you don't want to be there...
The most easily recognized innovation is the folding "clam shell" form factor. This design choice parallels the progression of mobile phone design in Japan, where ever-larger color LCD screens left little room for number keys that human fingers could comfortably press. In the pursuit of more surface real estate, Japanese mobile phone manufacturers decided to risk the stigma associated with flip phone designs -- a stigma largely caused by Motorola's unattractive and dated models
Excuse me? I would not call products like the StarTAC or V60 unattractive. Nor would I call them "dated". It seems to me that Motorola Cell phones are made for people who want to use their cell phones for exactly that purpose---to talk to people. I'll tell you this...my StarTAC 7868 is a hell of a lot more comfortable than any Nokia brick I've ever seen.
I find it interesting to see this story considering that I recieved not one, but TWO AOL cds in my mailbox this afternoon.
They weren't just the regular-old AOL-on-CD type either...one came in hard DVD-like plastic case, the other came in-get this-a metal tin.
All that was in the tin was the CD, nothing but that... talk about a waste of money... is there really any point to putting a CD that is going to get thrown away anyway into a metal tin?! I would say that even the tin would have use...but I really dont want to carry stuff around in a rather large flat tin that has AOL plastered all over it.
AOL-Time Warner would probably do fine if they didnt waste millions of dollars on marketing methods which may have been effective in the past, but probably aren't today. If people want AOL, they know wherre to get it...you don't need to spend millions to keep shoving it down their throats.
The reason I still use Kazaa is simple. You can disable the spyware, and when it's done, Kazaa is quite simply the best P2P that I've found. I can always download anything I'm looking for and never have to worry about not being able to find something, because its always there.
As for the spyware, do a quick search on usenet or using Google and you'll find how to disable it. I've had all of Kazaa's Spyware components disabled for a few months now.
Fortunately for me, Blacksburg, VA is extremely well connected for its size and such occurances have remained rare
Wow. I'd like to know where in Blacksburg you live, Cliff. I know that we got royally screwed over by Adelphia's plans to move to two-way cable, ending up being out of service for over a week in two separate incidences. This put me at least a week behind in some of my work, and got some of my clients quite irate with me.
But when I called up Adelphia to tel lthem of my situation, the following quote "Our service is intended for personal use only, and is not guaranteed for any "profit-making ventures"". Now the fact that I actually worked for Adelphia for a while so I had the inner hand in who to talk to didn't make a difference here...this was their policy and we were screwed.
As far as Blacksburg goes, if you have in-apartment ethernet, you're golden. Things otherwise have gotten better...but it has defintely had its rough spots.
I think they are being a bit too cautious. It seems that all the teams, being worried about safety have forgotten a couple things about the airplane that do not apply to any plane they have ever known.
The fact is, that the Wright flyer only flew 12 seconds on that first flight, and I'm sure it didn't do it very quickly, or very high up. I highly doubt that a crash in the flyer would really do that much damage to the pilot. After all, the Wrights themselves seemed to come out of the final crash that first day with no ill effects. I doubt they even had protective pads on!
So if their goal is to crecreate the plane and recreate that first flight--I think folks are fretting just a bit too much about "safety" issues. These guys need to grow some cohones....

This, among other things on those pages, mean OS 5 will also work on the 68000(Dragonball) processors as well.
It seems like this could almost be considered the "VAIO Jr." All they need to do is give you a can of purple/silver paint to repaint your PS2 and you'd have it!

It isn't that hard folks....theres no need to bitch about it, just fix it!
I'm more worried about it cross-polinating with real caffeine plants and diluting my Coding Coffee
For a moment, I thought that said Codeine Coffee...and half of me instantly wanted to ask where I could get some...
I'm supposed to be impressed by this?

Mod this parent up, he hits the nail on the head! People who're saying the movie sucks just don't get it.... this guy has it right.

I missed the first episode, does anyone know if they'll re-air it? I can't seem to find the info on SciFi's site.
The reason that this is "that big of a deal" on /. is because the full release of 1.2 was pulled last week because of a DHTML bug.
.1 on it =)
This is essentially the full release of 1.2, just patched and with an added
Cheers.

Isn't this a bit wasteful? I mean you can buy 128mb of memory for a LOT cheaper than one of those "ultra cheap 128mb graphics cards".
I'll stick with buying RAM and using my graphics card for what it was designed for. Besides...this only applies to X users anyway.
