I have often persued Windows for many hours. Sometimes it is very difficult to remember where I left my burned Windows XP CD.
Also, whenever you release a new version of Windows, I am at my computer trying to get the 0 day FTP sites so that I can have my pirated copy of windows before anyone else. Torrents have made this much simpler to accomplish.
The hauppauge card is excellent with MythTV. Myth seems like it was built for the hauppauge card. The best Howtos are written with the hauppauge card in mind.
These people also are happy with the fact that it sorta works, but not all the way. If you had a high end media room with a 100" screen and a projector, the image quality is not where it should be. It proably looks great on your 17" lcd or 4:3 ratio 27" television.
Gotta stop you there. I have been using MythTV for the last little while and the picture quality has been excellent. I recently switched to MCE '05 (I know - it tore me up inside to do it, but I had to. I couldn't get Myth working with my satellite - the IR blaster just wouldn't blast) and I've found that the picture quality it poorer than it was in Myth.
Before you say anything, yes, it's the exact same hardware that was running Myth (AMD XP 2000+, 768 MB RAM and a NVidia 4000 with a PVR-250). I've checked all the settings and they seem right.
My MythTV box ran off of a projector that was 5' across my wall and the image was sharp. I had to switch to a TV (my job took away my projector - stupid job) and the recordings from MCE look fuzzy on a MUCH smaller TV.
The most positive thing I can say about MCE '05 is that it just worked with my satellite system (a very problematic receiver). I had to train my media box to work with it, but that took 10 mins and I was on my way.
Having used both MythTV and MCE, I would pick Myth if I could just get the damn blaster working!
Anyone wanna do this? I have some friends coming over t'night - we were wondering what to do. I have a projector, a Myth box, a couple of divx hundred movies, a surround sound system and too much time on our hands.
So, who's up for this? Seriously. Send me an email: codepoets@hotmail.com and I'll give you directions.
We were thinking of watching Signs since we saw the Village last night. We're also surrounded by corn fields.
I agree - Myth was very difficult to setup. Now that I've done it a few times, I could set it up in a couple of hours (including OS install). It's definitly not meant for the average user to setup, but I don't see why a Tivo like device couldn't be setup around it.
I did download a copy of MCE to try it out. A friend of mine works in a distributer that builds MCE units and I was pretty impressed. I think as long as you use it in the certain way that MS intends, then great (well - except for the stability problems) - but as soon as you want it to do more, then you're outta luck - plus - comparing it side by side with Myth just made MCE look sick.
It's been covered a million times here, but MythTV does more than MCE or Tivo.
One day I gave MCE a try and found it to be a dreadfull experience. Sure, some of the widgets and transitions were nice - and the remote was pretty sexy (anyone wanna help me write a driver for Linux?), but it just left me wanting more.
I have most of my media living on a different machine - MCE had a hard time dealing with that. I had to import my mp3s (not oggs - god forbid) into Media Player before MCE would recognize them.
Large movies were a pain too - MCE wanted a nice screen shot of each movie - so a directory with 10-15 divxs was painful to browse.
I have MythTV set up with a PVR-250 and it's the best thing ever. Automatic commercial flagging? check Windows? Not even. So much better.
I literally *just* finished installing FC2 on my lappy. I'm running 'apt-get dist-upgrade' right now:)
I'm pretty happy for the most part - it's more responsive than FC1 - the menus are very snappy. I'm having a weird problem - none of my mail clients will check an IMAP account - weird, non?
My friend took issue with this and had a brilliant solution. This is the phone conversation:
friend: I think the new policy about seperating the rich people from the poor is great! bank rep: Great! We're pleased you like it! friend: I love it! I just have one question. When are you going to get a line for the black people? bank rep: Uh... friend: Yeah - the blacks - oh - the gays too - and the women. bank rep: I'll be right back...
The bank rep gave my friend the 'rich account' status. It's a terrible policy, but my friend had some fun with it. Me, I wouldn't bank at Royal because of that stupid policy.
Yup - someone's making a ton of money and it's not the mpaa.
Cinea will invest several million dollars to make and distribute the DVD players to academy members and possibly to movie critics and other awards groups.
So, wait. The mpaa has millions to spend on this new way to prevent piracy? I thought they were losing money out the ass! (they'll have to reimburse Cinea somehow - so the mpaa is really paying the millions for the DVD players and the encryption)
I might be way off base here, but I see nothing but buggy plugins and new exploits. Keep your dirty IE plugins away from my shiny FireFox.
Anyway - wouldn't this just create a homogenus network for browsers? We keep arguing that one OS in a network is bad for security sake - isn't this doing the same thing?
My god that's the worst site I've ever seen. I love sites I randomly click and hope it takes me somewhere interesting. I have no clue what that game is about from the site.
So, I'm running a site for free - Indecent Blogging and I'd love it to get to the size of Friendster. It's completely free and even ad free for now, but it seems to have hit a wall, so that doesn't really explain it. IB is about sex...and sex sells - so, what am I missing?
I've noticed a few things that need to be added - a better profile page, a way for users to communicate (email?) - I want to grow the community. Any suggestions? (your site sucks now withstanding)
David GOLDSTEIN! I feel better now. I've been racking my brain for the last 1/2 hour to remember his name.
"David Goldstein makes movies" Like that makes me care more. Does anyone have a copy of that so I can download it and put it in front of the DivXs I download. I do want the full theatre experience.
Better yet, anyone wanna make a new one with me? I have a few ideas for some...
"John Smith pirates movies" "Yeah - I uh, met my wife on IRC while downloading 'Lord of the Rings'. She was dressed up as Arwin when we met. I knew it was love then."

So, thanks for being you!
Love, me

I live in the country near Oshawa, Ontario.

That was really helpful - thank you.
Apparently unchecking the 'Firewall me' button in the setup doesn't turn off firewalling - silly Fedora Core.
Hey - I'm at work. I'm moving into dial-up country in 3 weeks.

Sounds like they need to read this.

If you were using SQL Server, you'd use ADO instead of SQL strings. That really is one thing I miss about mySQL and it's ilk.
My god that's the worst site I've ever seen. I love sites I randomly click and hope it takes me somewhere interesting. I have no clue what that game is about from the site.
what's better is that if you click that link now, you get this slashdot article!
:)
I think their search engine is doing a great job indexing
Great choice for Arthur Dent. He's from The Office. Anyone else seen that - it seems like a /. show. It's like Office Space with more bite.
Yup - then blog about it :)
Does anyone know if this'll get broadband access out to the rural areas? I'm in a place where DSL and cable are a wet dream.
That's a good idea. I was already thinking of a dating service or more appropriatly something similar to Adult Friend Finder.

"Yeah - I uh, met my wife on IRC while downloading 'Lord of the Rings'. She was dressed up as Arwin when we met. I knew it was love then."
Y'know - it could be like those Apple switch ads.
one can't help but wonder if this will prove to be the main, if not sole, source of these dvd screener leaks
...and does it mean they'll stop playing those damn anti-piracy commercials before movies?
"David makes movies"
"Alls I wants ta do is the bests jobs I cans"
Why's that? What's the other side? Have you read No Logo?
I agree it's a little cynical, but I've never heard anything good about WalMart.
Anyone here still shop at WalMart? Ever since I read this I've tried to be a little more conciencious about where I spend my money.
WalMart is tagged pretty hard in the book and so are a lot of the major companies.
Is anyone into anti-coporatism (other than M$?) here? I'd love to hear other things that you guys do about avoiding evil corporations.
Sure, he was magic. :)
OH! I forgot to mention the cassette player too!
