  1. My dad? on Forgotten Electronics of the 70s and 80s · · Score: 4, Funny

My dad is a bit of a tool. On his stereo he has the following components hooked up AND WORKING:
    DVD
    VHS
    Beta
    Record Player
    CD Player
    8 Track

It's all in 5.1 surround sound, so they all sound their best.

I just wonder if there's room for a player piano and a cannister recording device.

That's true and all, but what about mp3s? It used to be the case that it was a pain in the ass to share and download mp3s. Now music files zip all over the place. I've lost an mp3 on my hard drive and rather than spending the time to search for it, I'll just download it. The bandwidth will get to a point where there's enough room for people to swap movies in the same way.

You can argue that uncompressed sound files are harder to swap because they're so big, and that's true, but mp3s are 'good enough' for most people to want to swap them. I think the same can be said about divx movies.

I phrased that wrong. I gave up caffeine and as a result of that, I gave up the 3-4 cans of coke I drank everyday.

I'm sure it was the fact that I stopped drinking so much coke that helps.

I had problems sleeping at night when I was drinking that much coke. I know it's not *that* much caffeine, but it still bothered me.

I've actually lost about 20 lbs over the last 10 months or so. I did a couple of things - none of them hugely affected my lifestyle at all.

1 - gave up caffeine (I know!). I was drinking 3-4 cans of coke a day. I think doing that alone did me a huge deal of good.
2 - drank more water. We have a water filter at work and I'll drink about 3 litres of water a day. You have to pee every 1/2 hour or so, but it flushes your system and helps get rid of all the bad stuff that builds up in there.
3 - go for 1/2 hour walks every day. Nothing strenous

THat's about it. I'm still losing weight, and I feel a lot better. I'm also feeling a lot better now that I don't have my thrice daily cokes.

  19. you're not looking to start a company on Starting a Software Business in Today's Economy? · · Score: 2, Insightful

You're not going to be seen as a company for the first little while - for now you're essentially going freelance - you're code for hire.

I was in the same situation you are now - I was laid off a year ago (Aug 1, 2001). I started looking for full time work where I could. After a few weeks of picking up the pieces, I decided to give starting a company a try - and I did - well - sorta. When I approach someone for work and I tell them what I do, I usually get "Oh, you're a freelancer then" or "How long have you been out on your own?" or something like that. I have to explain that I'm a company - I registered my name, have a business bank account, I have a company website.

Still, you won't be recognized as a company - you're freelance. The people I've talked to think that freelancers are somehow lower than dirt. I don't get paid on time - I don't get complete requirements, I get told I have the job and then the work it pulled. You're going to get sand kicked in your face. It's a really hard line of work and you have to make sure that you really want to do it.

Where do you find work? I don't know. I got lucky and found some connections through a friend of a friend - I get most of my work through there. It's best if you have personal projects (that you think might make money! Don't forget - you're in this for money!) to do when things are slow - otherwise you'll end up watching too much daytime TV.

Why do I keep doing it? I love the freedom. I've done so many different types of projects - the straight web stuff gets boring after 10 minutes, but the exciting projects just zip by. The hours rock - I can take off any day of the week I want - of course I don't get paid and I usually end up working weekends.

Ask your friends if they know anyone who needs work done - ask family - do volunteer stuff. Get in the newspaper - get free publicity. Make sure that you're cut out for this kind of work - it's exciting stuff, but you really have to want it.

  22. Re:Read Microsoft's page ... on Ballmer Admits 'Linux Changed Our Game' · · Score: 2

It's totally the same FUD - they've just figured out how to say it differently.

Look at the reasons windows is 'better' (from their page:

Linux does not deliver comparable heterogeneous interoperability.

Riiight - that's why I've been running Samba between my systems for the last two years.

Windows 2000-based server appliances deliver industry-leading robustness and scalability with Symmetrical Multiprocessing (SMP) support for up to eight processors

Linux has support for up to 16 processors.

Linux offers both free and commercially available add-on clustering and load balancing solutions. However, these add-on clustering solutions come from various sources, do not conform to any set standards, and are often implemented on a particular Linux distribution.

Umm - yeah - isn't that the whole point?

This can tie the OEM to a particular, potentially financially unstable Linux vendor and its support programs, or force the OEM to maintain specific and expensive expertise in-house for self-support.

How is that different from Windows? Microsoft is a company that had been threatened to be broken up by the government - isn't that an unstable company? Have they forgotten that already?

Server appliances built on Windows 2000 perform better versus Linux on similar equipment in SPECweb tests

    Wasn't this a dirty test? Didn't microsoft cheat? (can't find a link).

Linux offers support for ASP but it is non-native and requires an add-on program to Apache or some other Web server deployed on Linux.

This is such a stupid argument. It's not the operating system that gives ASP support - it's the webserver. If I put apache on Windows I won't have ASP support without some tweaking. This is like saying Windows doesn't have native BASH support.

There's more FUD in there - I just don't have the pateince to go through it all. I'm going to pet my linux box.
