  1. Today Windows, Tomorrow "Win" on MS Asking Makers of 'Windows' Software To Rename · · Score: 2

The next step in the bullying will be to contact companies like Winzip Computing and force them to change the names of their software. Microsoft will claim to own "Win" and claim exclusive use.

And that means they go after all of the Spammers who send out the "Win a free vacation" emails. Slashdot will be forced to take the sides of spammers, which will be a distasteful but neccesary alliance.

And ultimately Microsoft goes after the companies that make those big clear glass things you look through.

Typically a financial institution considers an affiliate to be another (smaller) bank owned by the same corporate parent. An affiliate may also be another company in the corporate structure. It does not necesarilly mean a 3rd party or independant company with a working relationship to the first company.

That said, I still consider my financial (or any personal info of mine) to be mine, and I want the right to know when this information is being traded or sold, and the right to opt out.

  5. Take Over the Project on Ettiquette For Restarting Abandoned Open Source Projects? · · Score: 2

IANAL, but it sound like you've made a good faith effort to contact the old developer. I would make an effort to find out if they claim any ownership over the NAME of the program before taking it.

Remember: Linux is GPL, and you can do what you want with it, but Linus owns the name. If the boys in Redmond try to put out something called Linux they will get a knock on the door from attorneys representing Mr. Torvolds. Same goes for you. Find out if the name is trademarked (unlikely, but hey, CYA).

Also, you have large an audience here at /. at this moment. Why not just tell everyone what program you have your eye on? Perhaps someone knows the author. Or you may get some volunteers to help you comb the code.

  6. HA! YOU BUY PORN!!! CAUGHT YA!!!! on Pentagon to Track American Consumer Purchases? · · Score: 4, Funny

    Dear Pentagon,

Rear Adm. John Poindexter is going to spend a buttload of money to build a supercomputer when a phone call would do - yep, I dig porn. I hope that satisfies your curiousity. I stop in the adult book store occasionally. And he's going to log all of my web hits? Mostly porn sites. You want a back door to my computer? Just to save you the effort it's full of porn. Go figure.

So by everyone just speaking up and admitting they dig porn, perhaps we won't need to build this computer. Maybe we can save some tax money and spend it on KILLING THE FUCKING TERRORISTS!!!!!

I mean, for christ sake! Logging everything the CITIZENS of this contry do and say and buy! Hey, why not track who we fuck? What we eat? Stick our DNA in there for good measure! How we vote! Record every one of our phone calls and store them!

I know you're a bit freaked out after Sept. 11, but TRACKING THE CITIZENS of this country doesn't make much sense when the attacks were carried out by NON-CITIZENS!!! Track them! Prove it by tracking one! Just one. Track OBL and snuff him!

Wanna make a difference?? CONTROL OUR FUCKING BORDERS and reform the INS!

PS - Being that the supercomputer and database are likely to exist already, and the law was just a nice formality, then I imagine this message will actually make it's way to you. I hope it provides you with some amusement, being that I am just a pion, insignificant. Just an American.

Gotta go, Big Brother! Gonna eat a cheeseburger and watch the Victoria's Secret show. You probably knew that already, but I'm just making sure.

  7. Make them tell you what to remove... on Removing Proprietary Bits from Illegally Closed Open Source? · · Score: 2

IANAL, but it seems to me the company that stole your code has an obligation to point out what code they added to yours. Have them give you some documentation of what code they added, and then filter out everything you cannot account for.

Also, if this is a matter of Plug-in publishers bullying you, cripple plug ins. If they want to still market their products, they will begin to panic when they realize they are not supported under new versions of your program. If they won't play nice, take your ball and go. Make them beg to get back in the game.

    But that's just my opinion.

In the case of United Auto Workers, unions costs have doubled the price of most cars. Expect IT to become more expensive and go overseas. The tech sector is already hurting. Unions could kill it.

The other camp that complains about the UI is the Lightwave and Max crowd who are comparing this relatively small program to a full featured suite.

Blender is a good tool. It is about to get better. I dig the fact that it will be part of Linux distros from now on.

  25. Too subjective on Public Domain Superheroes? · · Score: 2

One could make the argument that if you recognize the current Batman as "canon" then you recognize DC as the current author or caretaker for the character. By that rational, the 60's series is also canon, because it was created with permission from DC.

Most fanfics are easy to filter because they are created without permission from the owners. But if corporate ownership is your criteria, you are going to be stuck with Bat-mite, Man-Bat, the 60's bat-suit, and all sorts of other wackiness. If you narrow Batman to Bob Kane, then you ignore the first (true) Dark Knight Returns series, Alex Ross' recent work, Dick Giordano's Batman stories, etc.

Original intent goes as far as Bob Kane. The rest is up to you.
