My son loves the Power Rangers in all their marketed forms. His TV/VCR Combo broke (with Power Rangers Blue Adventure inside.)
He hasn't watched a Power Rangers video (or any video) for quite a while. The kicking has gone down to a dribble! He is truly less violent.
Now look, I am a parent in the same sense that I am a Sys Admin. I take both jobs extremely seriously and "keep up" with the times. I pay a lot of attention to my son and we have a prettyy good relationship. I have no problem watching what he watches, reading what he reads and generally making sure nothing weird/harmful is going into his brain. I honestly didn't see the Power Rangers as any great threat. But once thy were out of the picture I DID see a vast improvement in him re Violence.
So maybe, manybe, MAVAV has something there. We're all smart and have jobs/school what have you... but what about the dumb poeple who play GTA3 and start getting ideas? What about a 6 year old who gets his hands on GTA3? Does he know the difference?
My point, be a little tolerant. And try to think about things from both (all three, four, five) sides.

First they have been running "brown-outs" in Brookhaven township (Suffolk County, NY.)
Second the Helpless Desk has been telling people to turn of and especially DISCONNECT their routers when they call for outages. They do not explain themselves they simply tell people to disconnect the equipment. Then when the problem is not resolved they tell the customer to leave the Router out of the mix and wait a while. "Do not hook the router back up.," they implore.
Third, and this is just heinous, the cable technicians have been "chopping the lines" of customers they suspect have either extra cable runs, or (God forbid) who have Satellite Dishes. I live in Farmingville and not only has this happened to 6 (SIX) of my neighbors but one of those fukkers was in my yard when they were supposed to be working across the street. My wife confronted the guy and he told her that satellites were unreliable and "anyting" can happen to them and that she should consider going back to cable. I came out and exlained that if he didn;t get off my property I'd bury him in it. I took his plate number and Van number and Cablevision has denied he was even in the neighborhood. We are pressing charges along with our neighbor's who's Sat Dish lines he cut. I doubt we have a rogue installer.

But I just tried to login and my computer went beep beep beep beep and like everything was gone. And I was like, "Duh." And so I had write new HTML but I had to rush so it wasn't as good. And it was a really good website too...
On a Friday they gave me a no money review (this was a few months after 9-11) and told me I was "the most important cog in operations" on Tuesday they said they no longer needed a Sys Admin and that my office was being cleaned out as we spoke.
I left. My laptop had been set up to erase the hard drive on Friday morning at 09:15 UNLESS I specifically stopped it from doing so. (This was a known thing and something I warned them about before I left.)
On Monday they called me. Something is wrong with your old laptop.
I told them 1500USD an hour (which was ludicris of course) and lunch everyday I was there.

Crashing often and wildly arcane BSODs are NOT user friendly! And even when Windows is stable (2K, XP) it's still not all that user friendly -- what with emergency updates and such. The fact that the command line is basically removed doesn't make it more friendly.
You problem, everyone's problem with Linux is with the window managers.
KDE & Gnome lead the pack and they are both wildly inconsistent and very different.

While I applaud your degree and all that if we (as humans) have learned nothing -- we have learned that piece of paper is not who you are. (See also The Wizard of OZ)
Your being a CS Major and your inability to install Linux have as much in common as my English Degree and my inability to write romance novels that I can sell by the pound. These things are unrelated. Knowing how to program is a very poor indicator of knowing how to administer a system (installation included.) That's why there are Sys Admins, and Programmers.
Is Linux harder to use? Yeah, probably. So if you want Unix chic and you want useablity go buy a G4 and run OS X. You'll feel cool 'cos you're 1337 and you'll feel smart 'cos you can run it. Everyone wins.
