... and from the author's view (yes, I am one) the danger of people not reading your stuff is more scary than the danger of not getting paid for every last copy.
Months of testing is done on every device before it goes out the door. Then it undergoes months of testing with the carrier. Then it gets released to the public.
This was a known flaw.
Of course, their anechoic chambers are beautiful! A beautiful way to make Consumer Reports look like amateurs.
There's so much spin going on, I can't express how flabbergasted I am!
And to point the finger at other people. C'mon!!
That's just childish and petty. Accountability should be SOP for any business. When Toyota had their accelration problems, they did the same run around. Pointing fingers at anything but the actual issue, and it's still happening.
Any company that treats it's customers like this doesn't deserve the customers it has.
That goes for ANY company.
Arrgghh!!
These CEOs are the rolemodels for tomorrows graduating MBAs.
If this were any other case of possible child pornography, all the computers, backups, etc... would have been seized. I can only hope they have, in this case, and are found to contain hundreds of violations.
This is sickening.
I more outraged and offended by the blatant violation of these student's privacy than I am by what may have been captured. Even if every single image is found to contain nothing more offensive than candy eating and television viewing, I hope the school if found guilty of child pornography.
Especially if the PCs were a mandatory part of curriculum and not allowed to be modified in any way that would disable the webcam. Covering the webcam could be considered disabling it. And let's face it, would have been considered disabling it.
One of the big problems people have with cloud computing isn't the computing, it's the storage. I'm sure I speak for a significant percentage of/.s demographic when I say, I don't want other people scrutinizing my private information.
If Chromium were to be companioned with a personal server app/OS (similar to Opera's Unite initiative), this could be game changing.
Require the server and client to use IPv6 and you have built-in security and dynamic publicly route-able addresses.
The potential for Chromium is staggering. Imagine the convergence of Android and Chromium with the aforementioned server component and El Goog won't have enough room for the money.
Considering the exaggerated cost vs. functionality of Apple products (similar to Sony or Ralph Lauren), people who are snubbed by a blatantly self-serving company shouldn't be offended. What people should be upset by is the militant stance of non-smokers and how "PC" it's become to cow-tow to them. This attitude is just another example of trading freedom for security. Fuck your security. If you can't protect yourself from ignorance, it shouldn't be my job to give up my freedoms to shield you. We've become a species governed by reverse Darwinism, only the weak get what they want. Reach deep and find your balls (metaphorical), stop bitching and forcing your opinions about how I should live my life.
You should be free to live with your own mistakes and triumphs. Just don't expect me to suffer for them.
Apple has an obligation to repair broken parts. There is no warning or clause that covers cigarette tar and it's effects on the inner-workings of your computer. Also, will they repair your computer of it's damaged by a virus or willful acts of ignorance?
I would've bought a couple of these in a heartbeat (even with the ridiculously lofty price) if I could have easily had access to my own local content. Watching Hulu or youtube is fine for previewing a show or movie, but not being able to watch content that hasn't been compressed and pushed into the "cloud" is ludicrous.
I just spoke with their tech support and had this confirmed.
I'm not trying to start anything but...this entire comment seems to talk about linux gui developement during the previous 15 or so years...
Only recently has GGUI (the extra g is for good) been a consideration in OSS...I'm not trying to start a war...Just...

Remember...that's server side communications in a conversation based system...
If I walk into a mall I don't have to buy everything...I pick what I want...
This is the water system...translated for data...that's the only way to make it work...All the information (non-specific-user-defined) would have to be in the system at all times...
If you want a drink you don't specify where the water has to come from...you open the tap and out it comes...but when you want to make lemonade or distilled water lets say...you have to have software on your end (pot and fire) to get out of it what you want...
But that presents the problem of too much bandwidth usage at old usage methods...unless we go to completely over the air data transfer which takes the phone system out of the loop and allows a more radio style internet...where the data is already being disseminated just waiting for you to tune to that station...you're not asking for the information you're allowing your device to consume it...
Zombies is a great friggin game...quick and fun...
And you get to kill zombies and screw your friends at the same time...not the most thought provoking game but fun as hell...
I have a homebrew computer...dual monitor setup using 2 vid cards made by the same manufacturer...Works perfectly in windows without having to go through any hurdles to get both monitors working just how I want them to...
I have yet to find a single fix, after months of scouring the internet, that will get both monitors working... One of my monitors will go to 1600x1200...linux won't do that out of the box...Linux has some nice features that make it fun...and the whole tinkering aspect is exciting...but when it comes down to it...If I want my PVR to do it's job I have to be in windows...if I want both monitors to work properly at all settings I have to be in windows...
Even with all the nice new installers coming out they still can't get those two seemingly mundane and simple things right...why? I would love to use linux...but until the wifey doesn't have a problem jumping online on one monitor and watching lifetime on the other then Linux will just be a tinker toy on a secondary partition on a secondary drive...
So in conclusion...until Linux will install and run as fully and easily as windows it will not have a chance at grabbing the all important mindshare of the general populace...
Shopping carts are no where near cheap. The friggin things are ridiculously expensive...that why you usually dont see new carts every time one is destroyed...
Some (limited) of what you say has merit...but for the most part not...Most people in this country need to work 2+ jobs just to make ends meet for 1 person...with cost of living (rent, heat, elec, food - absolute necessities) deducted from his pay the average guy making minimum wage makes about $-300/mo.
(assuming one job, 40 per week)...Add one child (single parent) and that figure changes drastically...in order to afford rent (without public assist.) That person has to work approx. 100+ hours per week. there's only 168 in a week...when does he have time to sleep let alone see his/her kid.
I know...I went from $35/hr with a partner also making $1000 a week to being a single dad trying to make ends meet when I got laid off and she left. That left me trying to find work while paying all the same bills...Sure I have some nice stuff now...but I can no longer afford even the simplest pleasures that I used to. Coffe in the morning has become an expendable luxury item.
This book (I currently work at a B&N) is quite the eye opener for the average person making enough to pay the mortgage/rent in one week (single income or dual income).
Obviously it depends on some degree where you live, but I've lived all over the US and wherever the cost of living is low that means there are approx 2 jobs and they both pay crap.
The cost of living has increased at a pace not equalled by earnings. Before Nixon you could buy a house with a years salary (modest) and a car with a months salary (again modest). Now the average person spends about a years salary on a car and 5-10 years salary on a house...if they can afford the down.
It's a lot harder than it used to be...I don't like it when people assume that everyone spends beyond their means...
This'll bring back one of the weirder architectural designs from the 70's..the conversation pit...
Instead of sitting in front of the TV...people will sit around it...
Probably wouldn't work for sports though...at least not until they have a few crays laying around processing the every second of play to track an morph the images from 24 cameras all having to run at different levels of zoom...
Nice for soaps and sitcoms...Boxing matches...But football would be a little tougher...
Every time you sit down to a game your attention ison the game...
Try talking on the phone while watching a movie...
That way it'll be like you're both watching the movie...Like a little LD date...That way you guys will be in sync on both ends and have something in common to chat about...
Phone conversations are hard for guys because we don't have the sensory stimulus of the woman being there (Married 5 years) and you need that: the smell, look, all that stuff...
Try a movie..
It'll work better...
Pick movies the two of you have already seen so you won't be too distracted by the movie...
"I think this hits at the heart of the problem, and the real reason such drugs are being overused nowadays: 5 year olds are supposed to be overactive."
That's true...but you must remember...if you do not have ADD or ADHD stimulant drugs like Ritalin, Concerta, etc... Will have NO CALMING AFFECT! In fact they will have a severe and opposite reaction. If you thought your 5 year old was a speed freak w/out the Ritalin wait till he takes it. Amphetamines affect normal ppl like you would excpect, they speed them up. AD(H)D ppl will calm down when given amphetamines.
Think about the phone...fairly complicated piece of machinery 150yrs ago...now we have cell phones made out of paper that we can throw away...
It's not for morons...it's simply about convenience...I would love to be able to control my house this way...simple email? All over the house personal phonebook so I never have to say, "Honey, do you remember Ted's number" etc...
Now when it comes down to a single closet mounted box wirelessly controlling everything...and is about as expensive as say, a TV, then I'll get one.
Or any apocalypse for that matter.
What better way to prevent communications from being disabled.
Better make sure the instructions for managing those satellites is readily available to the survivors.
... and from the author's view (yes, I am one) the danger of people not reading your stuff is more scary than the danger of not getting paid for every last copy.
Thank you for the laugh...
That was an excellent point. :)
I'm calling shenanigans on this one...

We truly are doomed.
I use a different brand of phone on AT&T's network. I am not an AT&T fanboy.
I have held my phone is every conceivable position to try and recreate this problem.
Nothing more than 1 bar lost.
I use a 3G smartphone.
If I sell you a pile a shit, it will smell like shit. If the solution only modifies your sense of smell, is it still shit? YEAH!! It's still shit!!
Comcast, Ford, Bank of America, et al, try the same tactic.
WAKE THE FUCK UP, AMERICA!!!
No wonder we're the laughing-stock of the planet.
This (and many other examples) makes me sad to be human.

I hope the entire school district burns for this.

Any HALO (optics) plane will have the capability to scan this same patch of ground in like a 1008th of the time it takes for these things to grow...
Seriously...it would take what a week for these plants to bloom? At least!!
It would take a HALO plane to 10 minutes to pick these things out with a deep penetrating sound scan...
It would be just as cost effective because the plane is already in the vicinity since the area in question would already be under surveilance...
Waste of time and money!
This smacks of something out of a teen girls magazine!
Are Muslim field hockey players just like us other girls?
GAH!
