...with all these gadgets and non-cell phone functions, what's the battery life on these things? i remember my old 'big' cellphone (it didn't even flip open, oh the humanity) that would last for days on one charge....my new one (yea it looks cool and all) lasts for maybe 72 hours before i gotta plug it back in. imagine having a HD sucking juice from it too...

kinda like some recycling programs, they tell you to seperate colored glass from the regular transparent type, only to find that the same dumpster truck is used to pick them up (in the same trash compartment i might add)

    *BLANK* CDs maybe.

    i mean $.05 x 13 songs = $.65
factor in $.25 for a blank CD and voila, that's still under a dollar. Unless they plan on *severely* reducing the price of retail CDs, I don't quite see that working out.

  7. don't like the splash screens on Anatomy of the Linux Boot Process · · Score: 3, Interesting

i've noticed on SuSE that it now comes with a boot splash screen (a la Windows loading...). I know that's (somewhat) easily turned off, but really, I don't want my linux to be all fisher-price pretty. give me the rough and unadulterated command lines that are run when it boots up...make it look cool, make it intimidating, give it that matrix-esque feel...make it scare off all the n00bs that think they know everything.

  9. Re:50 years later on The Birth of Electronic Music · · Score: 1

it's still not really picking up in the states, but it's a big big thing in europe (and other places, japan, etc).

I'd agree that most of it is pretty repetitive, but there's also a lot of melody that goes into it. If it weren't for the lyrics, rap wouldn't be much less repetitive than techno. being a big fan of the latter myself, i understand that's it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the people to whom it is usually don't care about that aspect of it.

  10. sounds good, but.... on MP3tunes Offers Music Service Without DRM · · Score: 2, Insightful

remember those car insurance companies that used the sales pitch "we will give you our quote and of 3 other competitors" ? yea, it may get you attention, but ultimately, how likely are you to break even?

not that i'm complaining, i'd love to be able to (somewhat cheaply) buy music and *keep* it.

is this supposed to be taken literally? stacking one CPU on top of the other?
or just some buzzwords that mean nothing that this implies?

Alien 1: It seems the earthlings won.
Alien 2: Did they? That board with a nail in it may have defeated us. But the humans won't stop there. They'll make bigger boards and bigger nails, and soon, they will make a board with a nail so big, it will destroy them all!

"The passport official who checks your passport does not go abroad. The cop to whom you go to register a credit card misuse does not own a credit card. If a cop is in no position to own a computer, how can he fight cybercrime?"

that seems like a pretty weak argument. granted a non-computer user (read: cop) may not be able to tell a harddrive from a computer case (still synonymous to some people), that doesn't mean that he can't be given instructions on it. I doubt cops *always* know what they are dealing with but that's what makes their job interesting.

i think a keen mind and a curiousity for new things is all it takes and kids seem to have plenty of both. I don't think there's anything you need 'to do' per se...like that quote "if you build it, they will come"
if nothing else works, tell them there's porn on the internet ;)

  17. related note on Bosses Keep Sharp Eye on Mobile Workers · · Score: 0

I remember reading something about Rent-a-car places putting GPS systems in their cars so they can tell if someone has been speeding (x amounts of mph over the limit times y amount of minutes, etc). If the customer did, he would be charged more. (sorry, don't have the article URL).

Much like with the system mentioned in the article, it's supposed to act as a deterrent but is it really more of a way for the guy 'on top' to exert more control (and hence the $$$ bottom line)?
