If i were president I'd make sure all the money spent Onnnnnnnn, good things I wouldn't have no lint in my pocket I'd rock it rock it i'd shock it I would not jock the fact that there are Rich people in the world because yo i got a girl And she needs new clothes and i need new sneakers And that's all i know If i were president, if i were president If i were president, if i were president!
If i was president (what would you do?) I would not carry, oh no spare change I would just rearrange, the whole government structure Cause there seems to be something that's Messing with the flucture of the money (what?) It's not coming to me So now it's time for me to tell my homey jarod d So i'm, looking at my wallet and i do not have a buck Damn i'm out of luck, damn i'm feeling stuck
1. Declare emergency martial law, and call the military into all major cities. 2. Disband the Legislative and the Judicial branches. 3. Make all media state-controlled. 4. ???? 5. Dictate!
And I don't just mean like "hentai" anime that is ACTUALLY porn.
I work for a webhost, and it's weird.. other than porn, there's NOTHING like (even just regular) anime that uses so much bandwidth and disk on the Internet.
I understand why Comcast would go after this, and I doubt they really have any complaints from the copyright holders.
I'm probably in the tiny minority here.. but I'm at least going to get one just for the HDMI port..
And not because HDMI looks better than component either.. just because I ran out of component ports in my TV but I still have an HDMI one!
My TV's got 2 HDMI, 2 Component, and 3 composite inputs.. it's also got one optical audio out which plugs in nicely to my cheapo receiver's one optical audio in.
Currently, I have my cable box hooked up via HDMI, my Xbox 360 and Wii via component, my old modded xbox and chessvision! via composite. It's all fine, except my old xbox looks like crap on composite! AND, my xbox 360 isn't using 5.1 audio (which would be nice for the HD DVD drive!)
Finally! I'll be able to move the xbox 360 to HDMI, meaning digital surround sound audio, and move my old xbox to component, meaning it's hd again! And, I've already got an HD DVD drive, so no big deal it doesn't come with it, and, I've got an ethernet cable so not too big a deal it doesn't come with wireless (though I REALLY don't understand why not.. actually wait, I do! It's because IPTV isn't going to work for crap over wireless.. so they want everybody to hook up their xboxes with real cable!)
I just saw on their site a pop-up.. RegisterFly refugees can use the promo code "FLYAWAY" to get a year of their L1 hosting (like 200GB of storage, 2TB of transfer/month, free registration) for free from now until the end of the month..
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of other registrar/hosts do things like this to "help out" what's left of their customer base!
Try out files forever from DreamHost.. DRM free, secure downloading of files, they handle the credit card processing and send you your money via paypal.
Currently it's in beta and only available to dreamhost customers, but they're a pretty decent host.. and try using "9999" as your promo code when signing up to get $99.99 off the first year!
I still think the best way to handle a "landrush" period as a new registry would be to:
1. Just turn on your registry and start taking registrations.. however, any domains registered in the first 30 (or whatever) days cost $5000/year (to the registrar) forever (at least until the registration ever lapses).. the registrars can charge whatever they want. 2. Publish that after 30 days, any new domains registered are $2500/year forever. 3. Publish that after 60 days, that price becomes $1000/year forever, 4. Publish that after 120 days, it becomes $500/year forever,... 5. Eventually, there's a time, maybe after a year, where all new registrations are whatever your final price is going to be, $6/year or something.
I think this solves ALL the problems with new TLD land-rushes. It dramatically removes the incentives for domain-squatters, and pretty much maximizes revenues to the registry. It also lets them slowly scale up their back-end to deal as more and more people register domains. They also get the marketing benefit of like TEN mini-land-rushes.
So please, somebody, do this with the next.blah landrush!
I think the posted missed a few things with their main argument that "a market solution only works when users can see what's happening."
Uh, people will know if mailing lists they're on are getting marked as spam. They can then whitelist that mailing list themselves to make sure THEY at least always get it.
If people don't do that because they never notice they're not getting the mailing list, then gee, maybe they don't value that mail they're not getting too highly.
And either way, the market wins!
I'm not saying I think pay for email is a great idea, I'm just saying I think you have to give "the market" a little more credit.. and if it sucks, it'll die, and if it doesn't, it won't, and life will go on.
The real thing that's going to be cool is the Airport Express Video, coming out in January (my prediction)!
With iTunes (software + store) already supporting video, the next logical step is to make a way to stream the video on your computer to your TV(s) over the network.
This is what's going to be awesome: Go to iTMS (they may need a new name!), download a movie for $5, organize with iTunes, watch in HD on any real TV(s) in your house whenever you want, as often as you want, forever!
I just spent a while this weekend trying to remove dozens of these things from my parents' laptop and I decided the main problem are three things in windows:
1. IE shouldn't be "customizable" by other apps at all, period. Any extra browser bars added on should be able to be seen and removed (permanently) just by going to the "View > Toolbar" menu.
2. There should be one easy way to see for sure what programs are running at startup and decide if you want them to or not. It'd be nice if you didn't have anything in your "startup" folder if nothing started up when windows booted! Somehow, that's not the case. Being able just to stop these things from auto-starting when you do get one would be 99% of cure.
3. Every application should be able to be fully uninstalled from the "add/remove programs" area.
If these three things just worked, spyware would soon be a dim memory of the early 2000s!
1. Have all music ever made. 2. Allow downloading in a DRM-free format (probably mp3). 3. Remember what you've bought forever, and allow you to re-download it as many times as you'd like. 4. Charge a reasonable price (99c a song is okay). 5. Have a nice interface and let you preview the songs. 6. Be legal.
I guess I can refer back to this list the next time I need to re-install windows!
I think there are only 6 really critical programs I need, besides everything bundled already with windows:
WinRAR: compression utility
SecureCRT: ssh client
Emacs: text editor
PSI: jabber client
Palm Desktop: contact management/treo syncing
FlashFXP: ftp client
After those, I guess I'd install these:
Excel: spreadsheet
mIRC: irc client
iTunes: mp3 jukebox
Word: wordprocessing
I guess if I could install more I'd then get eMule, acrobat reader, powerpoint, Yahoo Intellisync, XBConnect, XIso, FireFox, Daemon Tools, and Win994a Simulator!

But really.. WHAT is the obsession people?
DreamHost just celebrated their 10th Birthday too.. by giving away 500GB of space and 5TB of bandwidth for $9.30 for the first YEAR!
Weird, it was the first one I'd ever been in.
I kinda liked it because you could pay with any of those rfid credit card things as well as swiping a regular card. Fast and convenient!
I didn't like it because the cabbie was like "Don't you have cash?" . And he still made me sign the receipt after using the rfid thingy.
But yeah, I guess I don't care about privacy as much as convenience and new technology!
And not because HDMI looks better than component either.. just because I ran out of component ports in my TV but I still have an HDMI one!

Like Xbox Live? Or will you have to use a site like http://www.nwiifi.com/ to see when your friends are online like you have to now with the DS Lite?

For all the people whining about "Paypal still gets 10% of your money for a $1 transaction"!
Hello.. they ALREADY get much more than that with the typical 1.9% + 30 cents fees from before.
What they've actually done is LOWER significantly their fee for all transactions under $8.07:
a $1 transaction the old way cost you $.32 (32%!!)
now it's just $.10 (10%).
a $5 transaction was $.40 (8%), now it's just $.30 (6%).
If you have (or wanted to have) an online business which exclusively charges people $8.06 or less for goods, this is pretty good news!
the thirty emails I got today with the subject
"HELP! I'm being beaten to death!! Anyone?!! PLEASE HURRY! almonsted nocks"

What's next on slashdot?
Wired Magazine lists the 19 digital projection theaters in the country where Attack of the Clones can be viewed as Lucas intended?
I guess I'll just have to switch back to my Doctor's waiting room for all my cutting-edge tech news.
As soon as I heard ebay had acquired them, I thought "Oh boy, I sure hope ebay doesn't get involved in the technical side of running paypal".
Apparently they have.
By your argument there would be no "truth in advertising" laws or consumer protection laws at all..
but there ARE!
Dun dun dun.
No.. toolbars are okay, as long as they can be removed when you uncheck them from the "View > Toolbars" menu they STAY gone.

It took about 15 seconds to search Orkut for "April" and find:

(April Buchheit: 80% trusty, 70% cool, 70% sexy)
Privacy is a two-way street, Google!
Usually I would be the first in line to bash Microsoft, as would the vast majority of the slashdot group.
That would be one craaaaazy line!
